Verizon offers unlimited LTE data plan for HTC Thunderbolt, don’t expect it to stick around

Verizon execs have been clear as crystal that unlimited smartphone data will follow the dodo — perhaps as soon as summer of this year — but in the meanwhile you can drink your fill of the best as the HTC Thunderbolt will launch this Thursday with an unlimited LTE data plan. While we’ve no guarantees how long it will last, or whether you can grandfather the $30 monthly option into bigger and better devices down the road, it does open up a whole new avenue of opportunity for the Thunderbolt. Considering that Verizon’s 4G USB modems top out at for 10GB of LTE data for $80 a month , the HTC handset just became the most powerful, affordable MiFi you could possibly own. In an unforeseen act of generosity, Verizon has decided to scrap the $35 activation fee it charges with purchases of the 3G-equipped Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab tablets, leaving customers’ wallets a little heavier and hearts a little lighter. This change will be effective on month-to-month contracts starting from the first of this month or later — meaning a nice little refund for anyone acquiring an Android tablet through Big Red after March 1st — however we’re also hearing it’ll be a limited time offer. The intel has been communicated via email to Mobile Burn, and Droid-Life has also obtained a document saying as much, while we’re in the process of confirming it ourselves. All the same, it looks safe to get the (modest) celebrations going. One of the great many announcements of CES 2011 was Lexar’s new pair of Class 10 SDXC memory cards , one sized at 64GB and the other touting a spectacular 128GB capacity. The two performance — minimum transfer speeds of 20MBps — and storage enhancers for DSLRs and camcorders have now started shipping, asking for a measly $200 and $330, respectively. Those are steep price hills to climb, to be sure, but they’re peanuts compared to the initial $400 and $700 MSRPs that Lexar was touting back in January. And hey, that Professional label adorning the new cards isn’t there accidentally either, Lexar’s offering a limited lifetime warranty with each storage cell. Oh Arduino , is there anything you can’t do when put in the right hands? The hands in this case belong to a guy named Joven of ProtoDojo, and they whipped up the contraption you can see in the video below. Basically, it’s a wired NES controller that goes to an Arduino board, which in turn controls a set of servos. Those servos articulate conductive arms to touch the screen in just the right places. The whole contraption enables a rather playable version of Reckless Racing , making it feel all the more like the RC Pro Am successor it’s trying to be. We’ve already seen the principle of bone conduction be applied to headphones, but Sonitus Medical is taking the idea to a whole new level with its SoundBite dental hearing aid, which has just received the necessary European CE Mark certification (it already has FDA approval). As you can probably surmised, the device is a hearing aid that’s placed on your teeth, although it’s not actually implanted or attached in any way — it’s simply custom fitted to the person’s upper back teeth. The other part of the package is a more standard-type hearing aid unit that’s worn behind the ear, which processes and wirelessly transmits to the device in your mouth. That’s obviously not intended for cases when a simple hearing aid will do, but Sonitus says the system can help people who are “essentially deaf” in one ear regain their spatial hearing ability. For the last few remaining souls in North America not aware that the Nintendo 3DS is coming later this month , the Japanese company has rolled out its first US commercial. Shockingly enough, it doesn’t display anything not already announced, but now would be kind of late to be springing surprises on us anyhow, right? It’s a portable console with glasses-free 3D — that works reasonably well — and it’s made by Nintendo, which means half the people on your street will probably own by this time next month. Jump past the break to see the American commercial and its earlier-released UK sibling — you’ll find a fun juxtaposition of presentation styles when comparing the two. Foosball , it’s the game of champions too afraid to step outside and get their boots muddy. If that’s a sentiment you can relate to, you’ll have no trouble understanding why a team of Dutch designers has put together this here foosball table deluxe, which they’ve called 11 The Beautiful Game. In development since way back in 2008, the 11 has just made its way into limited production with a pre-order available via GRO Design’s website. We had a little looksie inside the company’s portfolio of past works and, as it turns out, it’s already responsible for designing the Nokia 6500 and 6500 Slide , meaning it should be well versed in the art of massaging metal into beauty. Each unit ordered takes 12 weeks of meticulous handcrafting to build, but if you haven’t got that long to wait, the video’s just after the break right now. The Kinect hacks keep rollin’, and we just keep on lovin’ every one of ‘em — despite most being decidedly non-practical. This one actually is, created by Sebastian Pirch at 3rD-EYE, a media production company. He’s made a free-space 3D modeling tool using a Kinect camera to track his hands, which he uses to create points in space and draft a model. To provide greater control he then made two Arduino -powered gloves that detect finger touches — basically DIY Peregrines . Using different connections of finger-presses he can move the entire model, move single points, create new points, create new polygons, and basically do everything he needs to do to create a mesh, which can then be imported into 3ds Max for further refinement. He even manages to make it all look fun, thus besting Lockheed Martin’s similar system that’s powered by zombies . Announced yesterday, Time Warner Cable’s iPad app arrived via iTunes as scheduled this morning to meet the rest of the pay-TV provider apps sporting its one key feature: live TV streaming of 32 cable channels. Speaking of the competition, Dish Network had something to say about that claim to fame as first with live streaming, since it’s already offered an app with Sling-powered streaming from its boxes . Of course, they’re not exactly the same approach since TWCable TV doesn’t potentially require any add-on hardware or tie up a tuner on your set-top box, while the Dish approach enjoys the ability of working beyond the reach of your home’s WiFi, and can tune in to any channel. Other than requiring both cable TV and high speed internet service those two last notes may be the key weaknesses to this strategy; while the TWCable TV app advertises itself as “another TV screen,” it’s one with significant limits and currently lags behind the competition by lacking features like remote control or DVR scheduling .
