Click here to view this media During a Tuesday segment about cheating in Atlanta schools, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly declared that “secularism” was at the core of the problem. “Do you believe that 95 percent of kids cheat?” liberal radio host Alan Colmes asked O’Reilly. “I would put the number about 85 probably,” O’Reilly said. “It’s about how you’re taught. Look, once the public school system embraced secularism, Moses and his crew with the Ten Commandments were banished.” “We live in a secular society,” Colmes pointed out. “It used to be that Judeo-Christian ethics were taught. It used to be ethics classes. No longer!” O’Reilly exclaimed. “That’s what happened.” “So, you agree with me that this is an epidemic?” O’Reilly asked conservative radio host Monica Crowley. “I think it’s getting worse,” Crowley remarked. “I think with the proliferation of media, too, you get an echo chamber where kids out there, okay, see people in authority, whether it’s the president, whether it’s members of Congress, Anthony Weiner or Barack Obama saying I’m going to cut the deficit my first term and blows it out of control. Or if they see O.J Simpson walking away committing a double homicide, getting away with it, Casey Anthony. They are learning the lesson of what they see out there in the culture. They are constantly thinking, ‘Hey, I could get away with it too.’”

After six hours of talks in Berlin prior to a crucial summit in Brussels, Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed a compromise on the losses that Greece’s private creditors are to take, in a complex new bailout for Athens, German and French government sources said. Jean-Claude Trichet, the president of the European Central Bank, who has been Merkel’s most vocal opponent in the wrangling over how to respond to the euro crisis, rushed to Berlin late on Wednesday night to take part in the negotiations. No details of the pact were revealed. But senior officials at the European commission in Brussels disclosed that a compromise was in the air to save Greece and halt contagion by levying a tax on banks in the eurozone – opposed by Berlin and proposed by Paris – as well as a long-term Greek debt rollover stretching for decades, and other measures aimed at reducing Greece’s crippling debt level. It appeared that the multi-pronged formula would inexorably lead to Greece being deemed to be in sovereign default, at least temporarily. The last-minute deal, following a telephone dispute between the two leaders on Tuesday, is to be put to the heads of the European commission, council and central bank this morning before an emergency summit of the 17 leaders of single-currency countries. The Brussels summit – the 10th time in 18 months that European leaders will have tried to save the euro and Greece from collapse – is being staged amid grave pessimism that politicians will be able to bury their differences and combine to rescue the single currency. It remained to be seen if the Franco-German compromise would win the support of other leaders and would go far enough to satisfy the financial markets. Amid a febrile mood and an ominous sense that the euro was facing a make-or-break moment, an unusual hush descended on the key European capitals on Wednesday. It was as if leaders and officials had been struck dumb by the weight of the responsibility bearing down on them. The silence was broken only by José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European commission, who chastised the current crop of EU leaders, declaring that “history will judge this generation of leaders harshly” if they refuse to act decisively in the euro’s darkest hour. The emergency summit brings together the 17 government leaders of the eurozone, plus the heads of the European Central Bank, the commission, and Christine Lagarde, until recently French finance minister and the new head of the International Monetary Fund. The main challenge is to forge a pact that will reduce Greece’s crippling level of debt. The fundamental issue is who pays for that. On Wednesday night, the Germans insisted that Greece’s private creditors pick up a large part of the tab, the main dispute with Sarkozy and Trichet. The markets are more than jittery, and Washington is nervous. President Barack Obama intervened on Tuesday by phoning Merkel. “Might this meeting finally bring an end to the farce surrounding the euro area’s response to Greece?” said Daiwa Capital Markets. “No chance.” Amid growing calls from Washington, the IMF, and the markets for a radical step towards eurozone fiscal union as the only hope of saving Greece from default and inoculating the euro, the Germans exasperated many by pooh-poohing such notions. “I know there’s a great longing for a big decision, proposals for eurobonds, a big restructuring [of Greek debt], for a transfer union, and much besides,” said Merkel on Tuesday. “I will not give in to this. The government will not give in to this.” Greece was granted a €110bn (£97bn) bailout in May last year, since when its debt has soared to €340bn, nudging 160% of gross domestic product and rising. It needs a second bailout of a similar size to keep afloat until 2014. New suggestions this week from France are to impose a levy on eurozone banks, raising €10bn a year. This is problematic. It would take time to establish, would penalise banks not exposed in Greece, would exempt non-eurozone banks lending to Greece, and would run into political opposition in national legislatures. The advantage is it would impose private creditor involvement without seeing Greece declared to be in default. Other options are lower interest rates on loans to Greece, debt rollovers or swapping bonds for longer maturities, using the €440bn eurozone bailout fund. The talk in Brussels last night was of a combination of rollover, bank levies, and haircuts that could cut Greece’s debt by about a quarter. The reported Berlin pact was believed to be a mixture of the various options. “What cocktail will they make out of all this?” said a senior commission official. “The real priority is that they produce a cocktail that everyone can drink.” The major challenge was to finesse the complex package in a way that does not trigger declaration of Greek default by the international ratings agencies. That looked unlikely. The ECB is warning it will refuse to accept defaulted bonds as collateral from Greek banks in return for liquidity to keep them afloat. The eurozone taxpayer, in the form of the European financial stability facility, would then need to step in to save the Greek banks or risk a wider European banking crash. T he crisis has been compounded in the past fortnight by Italy, whose borrowing costs are also now close to unsustainable. “Either we act as Europe, or we are not actors at all,” warned Barroso. “The situation is very serious. It requires a response. Otherwise the negative consequences will be felt in all corners of Europe and beyond. Leaders need to come to the table saying what they can do and what they want to do and what they will do. Not what they can’t do and won’t do.” Euro European monetary union European commission Currencies European Union Angela Merkel Europe Nicolas Sarkozy Greece Ian Traynor guardian.co.uk

Temple-Reston also featured an expert who attributed Ohio's actions against the professor to ” elevated levels of Islamophobia .” The correspondent, who donned a headscarf and posed as a Muslim woman as part of a sting operation against U.S. border control agents earlier in 2011, and co-wrote a book with ACLU executive director Anthony Romero back in 2007, first introduced the professor, Omar al-Omari, with her “tweed jacket” description and added that he is a ” big coffee drinker .” She then played two sound bites from the professor, who described how he had been singled out by trainers at a seminar for law enforcement officers who, according to the journalist, had “offered specific examples of what they said was Islamic radicalism in Ohio.” After citing one of the instructors in the seminar, who is a former FBI agent, Temple-Raston painted a positive image of al-Omari: “Omari ran a key Muslim outreach program for the State of Ohio. What he was doing was considered so effective, counter-terrorism officials in Washington sent him overseas to talk about it. Omari is from Jordan. He's been living in the U.S. for 30 years. He's an American citizen.” She then added that despite this, “for many people in the class, it seemed entirely possible that he could be a terrorist.” The NPR correspondent then played four consecutive clips from the deputy police chief of Columbus, Ohio, who vouched for al-Omari: DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF JEFFREY BLACKWELL, COLUMBUS, OHIO POLICE DEPARTMENT: I was shocked. I was shocked that a person, at his level in the State of Ohio in the Department of Public Safety, would have his picture displayed by an anti-terrorism group. TEMPLE-RASTON: Chief Blackwell is now in charge of the police department's homeland security unit. BLACKWELL: His reputation was impugned incredibly by the speakers. TEMPLE-RASTON: And nobody sort of said, hey, wait a minute? BLACKWELL: Yeah, there was a wait-a-minute moment. There clearly was a wait-a-minute moment. TEMPLE-RASTON: Blackwell and some of the other leaders in the department suspended the class. BLACKWELL: We had a meeting and we discussed what in fact we were witnessing right before our very eyes- what was transpiring in the lecture hall. TEMPLE-RASTON: Remember, nearly everyone in the room knew Omari. Most of the visiting officers and Columbus cops had actually worked with him on outreach in the Muslim community. But for some reason- maybe because former government officials said that Omari couldn't be trusted- people in the room were ready to believe the worst. Chief Blackwell hadn't expected that. BLACKWELL: There were a large amount of people there that felt the class was, in fact, appropriate, that the finger-pointing and the name calling and nexuses that were developed and discussed, were appropriate to discuss. And then, you had a huge percentage that were equally and diametrically opposed to that way of teaching and the substance of the anti-terrorism class. TEMPLE-RASTON: So what was the lesson you took from that? BLACKWELL: That, as Americans, we are all over the board on our feelings about the terrorism issue. And as a law enforcement professional, even law enforcement is divided in how they view people. Later, Temple-Raston turned to Bill Braniff of the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy, who raised the specter of “Islamophobia:” BILL BRANIFF: I think this is something that happens across the nation fairly consistently. TEMPLE-RASTON: That's Bill Braniff. He's in charge of the training program at the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point. He sees what happened in Ohio as part of a larger problem. BRANIFF: The Muslim-American community is being preyed upon from two different directions: one, the jihadist recruitment and radicalization that is actively preying on their sons and daughters; and two, the elevated levels of Islamophobia- and Islamophobia at worst and just distrust or alienation at best . Towards the end of her report, the journalist summarized the circumstances of al-Omari's firing: ” Omari lied on his employment application.

Moody’s want to go to the party too so they need to lower our credit rating if we miss it. Also, Fitch joins in the Ramadan celebration: Fitch warns US could lose AAA rating by Aug. 4 without deal The Fitch credit rating agency has warned that it could downgrade the nation’s credit rating from AAA to B-plus as soon as Aug. 4 if a deal is not struck to raise the debt limit. — Such a move would significantly drive up interest rates for the government, which in turn would boost borrowing costs for all sorts of loans that use Treasury debt as a benchmark for their own rates. Wonder if they’re secret Muslims or something.
Continue reading …As NewsBusters previously reported , Chris Matthews on Wednesday lied about Ronald Reagan's position on taxes in a segment insinuating the late President would oppose the current Republican stance on the debt ceiling. When Salon editor Joan Walsh said Obama “is actually the Reagan figure here,” former RNC chairman Michael Steele bust out laughing (video follows with transcript and commentary): JOAN WALSH, SALON: Well, right. Well, Reagan was very much a conservative, and I didn't agree with him on much, but he was a pragmatist and a compromiser. And the fact of the matter is, Chris, I heard my friend Michael talk about the Constitution and the Tea Party likes to talk about the Constitution and the Founders, but the fact is the Founders didn't agree on very much at all. MICHAEL STEELE: Right. WALSH: The Founders argued about a lot of things, and they created a system in which we had to talk to one another and had to compromise. This President, President Obama, who I don't always agree with either, is actually the Reagan figure here. STEELE: [Laughs] WALSH: He is the person saying… CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Why are you laughing? WALSH: …you know what, I'm going to disappoint some folks. STEELE: Okay. [Continues laughing] WALSH: Please don't laugh at me, Michael. I didn't laugh at you. MATTHEWS: Why are you laughing, Michael? STEELE: When you say something funny, I’m going to laugh. MATTHEWS: Why’s it funny? WALSH: Why’s it funny? STEELE: Because he should have listened to that Reagan speech in, when he was a U.S. Senator, and voted against raising the debt limit. I mean… WALSH: Yeah. STEELE: …this is the fact here. The fact of the matter is, you know, it’s great for the DNC and the Democrats on the Hill to run around and quote Reagan and all of a sudden to find their Reagan mojo. The reality of it is it’s not believable because they’re not consistent in applying those very principles that Reagan talked about in, in particularly economically in how we deal with this problem. So, don’t, you know, cry me a river about, about Reagan. The reality of it is the President of the United States currently, Obama, did not listen to those very words when he had an opportunity as a U.S. Senator to vote… WALSH: You know what? Now look… STEELE: …to increase that debt. When you think about it, it really is hysterical watching all of these Reagan-hating media members constantly comparing their beloved Obama to a president they had nothing but scorn for when he was in office. It just goes to show how far such folks are willing to stoop to get the current White House resident reelected. They'll even compare him to someone they personally loathed hoping that some Americans who loved our 40th president will like the 44th version more. Most disturbing is we've still got almost sixteen months left of this chicanery. Makes you shudder at the journalistic dishonesty awaiting us. Readers are advised to review Scott Whitlock's ” Chris Matthews Lies About Ronald Reagan as Way to Smear 'Terrorist' Republicans . ”

Nearly 20 of them ventured to the gates of the White House Tuesday with a letter in hand to the president demanding the he immediately deliver Congress a written proposal to raise the debt ceiling. “Given the significance of our debt-driven crisis and the historic importance of the negotiations, we believe it is imperative that the work towards any agreement be as transparent as possible so that American people have a chance for careful evaluation of the process free from political posturing,” the members wrote in the letter. Rep. Tom Reed, who led the freshman lawmakers to the White House, told reporters the group doesn’t care if opposing a debt ceiling increase harms their reelection chances. “We don’t care about reelection,” he said. “We felt it was incumbent to come to the White House because this is a critical issue.” Members of the group added they will not agree to any debt ceiling proposal unless there are detailed spending cuts and timelines involved. Apparently they don’t think their leader John Boehner is capable of negotiating for them if they’re pulling stunts like this.

Even more hilarious, in a twisted way, is when they take it upon themselves to lecture those same Americans about the virtues of poverty — or to explain, as Fox’s Stuart Varney did yesterday, just how much better off poor Americans are now than they used to be. In fact, according to his guest — Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation, who has assembled his damned lies and statistics in a single report at their site , America’s poor people have a better standard of living than your average European. Right — if appliances were any accurate measure of your standard of living. This is just one of those pleasant reminders from our corporate masters that you’re never as bad off as you think you are. Why, Varney and Rector seem dismayed that today’s poor in America don’t live off dirt floors. If you keep pushing for taxes on the rich, that may be what you’ll get!
