Click here to view this media Here’s Dave Dayden’s take from yesterday on what might be going on during these negotiations over raising the debt limit — Another Yo-Yo Trick: White House Floats, Then Denies, All-Cuts Deal . I don’t know how this is going to play out, but I do know I feel like I’m living through some re-air of the Twilight Zone just watching our politicians play a dangerous game of chicken this close to defaulting on our nation’s debt when this fiasco is one of their own making. I’m also disgusted that Bernie Sanders is one of the few people speaking out about the inequity in our society as he did here again with Keith Olbermann last night. So far as Bernie noted, nothing he’s heard about what’s going on during these meetings addresses that and they’re looking to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and the elderly if the leaks coming out are true.

During the 12 p.m. EDT hour Friday, Whitfield alleged that many important players from both parties think Obama may be “caving” to Republicans. “You know, there are a lot of players who are very concerned – Democrats and Republicans who are concerned – and particularly Democrats are concerned that the president may be giving up too much in order to come about a deal,” Whitfield remarked while stumbling over her words. [Video below the break.] Whitfield explained that in pushing an agenda of compromise, of including spending cuts and tax increases in a debt ceiling plan, President Obama may be “caving,” according to some “very concerned” members of the debate. A transcript of Whitfield's comments, which aired on July 22 at 12:10 p.m. EDT, is as follows: FREDRICKA WHITFIELD: So, what's interesting — the president keeps the using the word “compromise.” But then there are others who are saying, is president compromising or is he caving? You know, there are a lot of players who are very concerned — Democrats and Republicans who are concerned — and particularly Democrats are concerned that the president may be giving up too much in order to come about a deal.

Continue reading …It doesn't get more obvious than this. Former Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano, who pleaded guilty Wednesday to five felony counts, is a Democrat. What follows are the results of three searches demonstrating that every media outlet which can be found by Google News which has tracked the story in the past 30 days has failed to note Solano's party affiliation. First a Google News search on Solano's full name (sorted by date, with duplicates) yields 90 results ( the first page says “about 96,” but it's really 90): A Google News search on ["Greg Solano" Democrat] (typed exactly as indicated between brackets) comes up empty : The same goes for a search on ["Greg Solano" Democratic]: Any questions? Here is a brief description from a recent Associated Press story of Mr. Solano's escapades: Former Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano pleaded guilty Wednesday to five counts of felony fraud. Solano resigned in November and admitted he embezzled and then sold county-owned items like office equipment and bullet-proof vests on eBay. He was arrested in January and charged with 251 counts of embezzlement and one count of fraud. It seems more than a little doubtful that press coverage of a Republican sheriff sentenced for serious crimes of this nature would be able to completely avoid having his or her party identified by any press outlet. Continue reading …President engaged in talks with Republican leader to negotiate deal, which would mean $3tn cuts in federal spending Barack Obama has warned of drastic consequences if America does not reach a deal on the debt crisis facing the country, saying: “If we do not solve it, every American will suffer.” With only 10 days left until the deadline, Obama and the Republican leader in the House, John Boehner, have been engaged in behind-the-scenes talks trying to negotiate a compromise. But a deal is still in doubt, facing fierce resistance from diehard Republicans in Congress – elected last year with the help of the Tea Party movement – and from left-leaning Democrats. Speaking at a public meeting in Maryland on Friday, Obama said defaulting on its debt was not an option. “We have never defaulted on our debt and we are not going to do it now,” he said. A default would be a major embarrassment to the US, with some economists warning it could trigger a new worldwide recession. The US chamber of commerce expressed nervousness over the prospect of America’s credit rating being downgraded. A deal would see more than $3 trillion slashed from federal spending over the next decade, including farm subsidies, military spending, social security and basic medical insurance. Federal payments to state governments could also be hit. State governors are laying down emergency plans, with California, among others, looking for alternative sources of borrowing to tide it over. Banks and businesses are also working feverishly preparing for worst-case scenarios. The crisis is the biggest test of wills yet between Obama and hardline Republicans endorsed by the Tea Party movement. It dwarfs the stand-off earlier this year when the federal government faced shutdown. Republicans want huge spending cuts to reduce the country’s massive national debt but oppose any tax rises. Democrats have agreed to spending cuts but want to protect the poorest and to ensure that any package includes tax rises. The US is closer to the brink than the 2
Continue reading …As we expected, another part of this debt ceiling farce is over. It doesn’t matter if the vote was a straight party-line vote because Republicans want to play to their base. The Senate on Friday rejected a House plan to substantially cut government spending and raise the federal debt limit contingent on a balanced budget proposal, leaving Congress up in the air about how to resolve its impasse over the federal debt ceiling and avoid a government default. Senators voted 51 to 46 along party lines to set aside the measure, known as the “cut, cap and balance” bill , which was sent to the Senate by the House this week and seen by conservative House members as their preferred option for increasing the debt ceiling. For many House Republicans, the legislation was their best offer in the continuing standoff with President Obama and Congressional Democrats. Now there’s a lot of blathering going on about Boehner and Obama cutting a major deal. I’ve heard from sources that this is inaccurate and then you hear it in reports that it’s on. John Boehner has denied that he has a deal with Obama: Now that the House debt plan is dead , lawmakers need to come up with another path for raising the debt limit. And at today’s press conference, John Boehner continued his denial that he’d reached a plan with Obama: But before departing, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), ever sensitive to the needs of his conservative caucus, told reporters, there was “never an agreement,” with President Obama to raise the debt limit. “Frankly,” he said, “[we're] not close to an agreement.” The Washington Post has reported they are negotiating: Obama, Boehner pursue a deal as Democrats fume President Obama and House Speaker John A. Boehner rushed Thursday to strike agreement on a far-reaching plan to reduce the national debt but faced a revolt from Democrats furious that the accord appeared to include no immediate provision to raise taxes. With 12 days left until the Treasury begins to run short of cash, Obama and Boehner (R-Ohio) were still pursuing the most ambitious plan to restrain the national debt in at least 20 years. Talks focused on sharp cuts in agency spending and politically painful changes to cherished health and retirement programs aimed at saving roughly $3 trillion over the next decade. More savings would be generated through an overhaul of the tax code that would lower personal and corporate income tax rates while eliminating or reducing an array of popular tax breaks, such as the deduction for home mortgage interest. But the talks envisioned no specific tax increases as part of legislation to lift the debt limit, and the tax rewrite would be postponed until next year. Democrats reacted with outrage as word filtered to Capitol Hill, saying the emerging agreement appeared to violate their pledge not to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits as well as Obama’s promise not to make deep cuts in programs for the poor without extracting some tax concessions from the rich. When “we heard these reports of these mega-trillion-dollar cuts with no revenues, it was like Mount Vesuvius. . . . Many of us were volcanic,” said Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) . White House budget director Jacob J. Lew denied that a deal without taxes was in the works. “We’ve been clear revenues have to be part of any agreement,” he told reporters. I did hear Obama say that there had to be a balanced approach to a debt-ceiling deal during his Town Hall meeting this morning. Harry Reid seemed to be upset as well, and had this to say: After the vote, Senator Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat and majority leader, said the Senate was for the moment abandoning its fallback plan and would not immediately move ahead with a procedural maneuver proposed by Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky to increase the debt limit. He said the Senate would instead await the results of negotiations between Mr. Obama and the House speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, over a broad deficit reduction package. “The path to avert default now runs through the House of Representatives,” Mr. Reid said after Democrats voted against the House plan. He said that he was canceling plans to keep the Senate in session over the weekend and that lawmakers would instead reconvene Monday, just more than a week before the Aug. 2 deadline set by the Treasury Department for increasing the $14.3 trillion limit I’m totally against cuts in our safety net programs — especially to get a debt ceiling vote done. Now it’s being reported Reid confronted Jack Lew over the Obama/Bohener reports: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) confronted White House budget director Jack Lew during a Thursday afternoon meeting about secret talks on a deficit-reduction deal between the president and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). “I’m the Senate majority leader — why don’t I know about this deal?” Reid demanded as soon as the budget director walked into the historic Mansfield Room for a meeting with Senate Democrats, according to a lawmaker who witnessed the exchange. Lew shot back: “If there’s a deal, then the president doesn’t know about it, the vice president doesn’t know about it and I don’t know about it.” A Senate Democratic aide confirmed the exchange took place. Democrats were outraged about reports that Obama was willing to accept major spending cuts in exchange for reforming the tax code at some point in the future as part of a deal to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling. Reid and other Democrats warned the administration officials in the meeting that they might not support a deal between Obama and Boehner if kept out of the loop. “It was a heated session,” said a senior Democratic senator who attended the lunch. “There’s a basic lack of trust with the president.” Kabuki rules. And as predicted, the Villager position on “Shared Sacrifice” is big on working people doing all the sharing and all the sacrificing too.
Continue reading …ABC, CBS, and NBC ignored the existence of the Cut, Cap and Balance (CCB) bill until last week, a Nexis search revealed, despite multiple polls demonstrating overwhelming public support. In addition to the blackout, none of the broadcast networks ever mentioned the positive polls their coverage of the bill, even though 65 percent of the public backed a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget in a Mason-Dixon poll from May and 72 percent approved of such a measure in a Fox News poll from June. Since the networks started paying attention to CCB last week, CBS has discussed its dim prospects on the “Early Show” and “Evening News” six times, and CBS and ABC have both mentioned the bill only once. At CBS, correspondent Whit Johnson on the July 17 “Evening News” was the first to write CCB's obituary without acknowledging public support: “They want immediate cuts, an aggressive cap on future spending, and constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.” Senate Democrats say the proposal has no chance.” Correspondents Bill Plante and Nancy Cordes joined the hit parade in the following days, mimicking each others reports on the “Early Show” and “Evening News.” On the July 18 “Early Show,” Plante called CCB “dead on arrival,” failing to mention the favorable polls: “It would revert spending back to 2008 levels and cap the budget at eighteen percent of gross domestic product. It also calls for a balanced budget amendment, a provision Democrats say is dead on arrival.” The next day, Cordes parroted Democrats on the “Evening News” who claimed the bill “wastes time at the 11th hour” and didn't mention public approval: “Conservatives call the bill they're voting on tonight Cut, Cap and Balance because it cuts spending this year and then caps it at 2005 levels. Democrats call it a one-sided approach that wastes time at the 11th hour.” NBC's only mention of the popular proposal occurred on the July 19 “Today,” with Ann Curry admonishing it in two interviews and Natalie Morales disregarding it in a news brief. Interviewing NBC Congressional correspondent Kelly O'Donnell, Curry scolded: “The president has already said that he's going to veto it. Do we really have time for a plan that is really just show, Kelly?” ABC's Jonathan Karl mentioned CCB during a round table discussion on the July 17 “This Week,” suggesting that “nothing can pass” both chambers of Congress at the moment, including CCB. ABC's senior political correspondent could have acknowledged that while neither President Obama's original plan to have a clean debt ceiling vote nor the Republicans' CCB plan had high hopes of passing, the American people support the House GOP plan. The only time CCB was mentioned on air by any of the major networks before July 5 was during “Early Show” co-host Chris Wragge's interview with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), when the freshman senator brought it up on his own and wasn't asked to elaborate. On the cable side, MRC analyst Matt Hadro reported that CNN ignored the findings of its own poll released Thursday demonstrating broad support for capping spending and implementing a balanced budget amendment.

The development renews pressure on the prime minister over his judgment in hiring the former News of the World editor and represents the third criminal investigation Coulson faces, adding to allegations that he knew of phone hacking while in charge of the tabloid and authorised bribes to police officers. Strathclyde detectives confirmed that they had opened a perjury inquiry centred on evidence Coulson gave in court last year that led to a man being jailed. Coulson was a major witness in a trial involving Tommy Sheridan, the former MSP who was accused of lying in court when winning a libel action against the News of the World. Coulson had been the editor of the Sunday tabloid when it ran a story accusing Sheridan of being an adulterer who visited swingers’ clubs. Sources say police will examine Coulson’s denial of any knowledge of phone hacking and payments to police officers at the Sheridan trial against the evidence held by the Scotland Yard investigation. At the trial Coulson also denied knowing that the paper paid corrupt police officers for tip-offs, which contradicts recent disclosures that News International has uncovered emails showing payments were made to the police during his editorship. Coulson, who was called as a witness in December 2010, told the court that he had no knowledge of illegal activities by reporters while he was editor of the newspaper. He also claimed: “I don’t accept there was a culture of phone hacking at the News of the World.” Sheridan was jailed for three years in January after being found guilty of perjury during his 2006 defamation action against the NoW. He had successfully sued the newspaper over its claims. Also giving testimony alongside Coulson were Bob Bird, the News of the World’s Scottish editor, and Douglas Wight, the Scottish edition’s former news editor. Bird denied being part of a “culture of phone tapping” and Wight, who is now the paper’s books editor, told the court he was not aware of any payment for illegal activities. Strathclyde police’s assistant chief constable, George Hamilton, said: “Following our discussions with the crown, we have now been instructed to carry out a full investigation into allegations that witnesses gave perjured evidence in the trial of Tommy Sheridan and into alleged breaches of data protection and phone hacking. “We will also be looking to see if we can uncover any evidence of corruption in the police service or any other organisation related to these inquiries. “However, I must stress that no specific allegations regarding corruption have been presented to us at this time. “We will be working with the Metropolitan police and with the other Scottish forces as we progress with the investigation. “I have put in place a structure that will allow us to work effectively together, but also to ensure that any member of the public who has a concern regarding the safety and security of their private data and information is able to register that concern and to have it properly investigated. “By its very nature, this investigation will require us to allocate varying levels of resources to it. There is a huge amount of material to consider and, potentially, a large number of people to contact. “This will mean that the investigation is likely to be a lengthy one. However, you have my absolute assurance that it will be a thorough one. We will do everything we can to find out the facts and to report all examples of wrongdoing.” Sheridan’s lawyer, Aamer Anwar, said: “Over two weeks ago we provided a detailed dossier of allegations of perjury, phone hacking and breach of data to Strathclyde police and called for a robust investigation. “Over £2m was spent by the police on investigating Mr and Mrs Sheridan and we were told it was in the public interest. I expect now to see a similar ruthlessness and determination in dealing with the News of the World.” A News International spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that we have been contacted by police on this matter. We can’t say anything else.” Earlier this month it emerged that Coulson had hired one of Scotland’s top QCs, Paul McBride. Detectives arrested the 27-year-old on Wednesday on suspicion of murder after 36 adulterated bags of saline were found at Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport. Police have been given more time to question her under a warrant of further detention. It was due to expire at 9.05pm last night, at which point she had to be either be released from custody or charged. It is understood Leighton had recently been rejected for a new job, thought to have been a promotion within the hospital. She is believed to have vehemently protested her innocence to detectives. Officers said it was likely the death toll would rise as the coroner investigates any further unexplained deaths at the hospital. An 83-year-old man who died on Thursday was named as electronic engineer Derek Weaver. A postmortem on an 84-year-old woman who died on 11 July and has not yet been identified was inconclusive, but she also had low blood sugar. Assistant chief constable Ian Hopkins sought to reassure the public that the patients who died became ill before police were called in, and said that 60 detectives were working on the case. “Since the police have been investigating, and the measures have been stepped up in terms of security at the hospital, we have had no further incidents of deliberate damage or contamination of products within Stepping Hill hospital,” he said. Both pensioners had been patients on wards A1 and A3, where the saline was tampered with. The police inquiry is focusing on patients’ treatment from 7 July. Hopkins said the police wanted to prevent further harm and once that was achieved they would look at cases before that date. Inquests have been opened and adjourned into the deaths of Tracey Arden, 44; George Keep, 84; and Arnold Lancaster, 71. Those who know Leighton portray her as a hard-working, cheerful and polite young woman who enjoys nights out with her friends but had found nightshifts difficult. She followed her mother, Lynda, into nursing after taking an Open University degree. Her mother is a manager at Stepping Hill hospital, responsible for nurse training, and her father is a bus driver. Another man in his 40s who was critically ill at the hospital after suffering a drop in blood sugar is said to be improving and a woman who suffered a seizure is also said to be recovering. Hospital staff say they are not concerned about the health of nine other patients who were affected by a fall in blood sugar levels. Chris Burke, chief executive of Stockport NHS foundation trust, said: “Our thoughts are obviously with the families of those affected by recent deaths at the hospital. Because a police investigation is still underway, at the request of the coroner, all deaths are being referred to the coroner’s office.” He said they fully support the coroner’s thorough approach to scrutinising and investigating the deaths. The General Nursing and Midwifery Council said it had begun proceedings to suspend Leighton’s registration following her arrest. Crime NHS Health Helen Carter guardian.co.uk
Continue reading …Click here to view this media Probably the most disturbing aspect of the multifarious effects of Fox News’ right-wing propaganda machine and its Tea Party offspring is the way it has utterly taken over the lives of so many senior citizens, who lap up every word as the gospel truth and have become increasingly radicalized by talking heads like Glenn Beck. Even as they project their own intentions onto the likes of the unions , the Fox acolytes and the Tea Partiers have effectively become a brownshirt corps of mean-spirited, vicious thugs. It’s deeply disturbing to watch people in our parents’ generation viciously attacking liberals with increasing venom and violence. The latest example took place last weekend in the quiet little retirement town of Roseburg, Oregon. It’s a pretty little burg on the I-5 corridor in western Oregon that is mostly populated with senior citizens of various stripes. Via Carla at Blue Oregon, we happened upon this story in the local paper : A small political gathering of about 18 liberal thinkers at River Forks Park Sunday afternoon erupted in conflict when about 35 members of the conservative tea party intruded upon the meeting, waving flags and holding signs accusing the rival group of being communists, Marxists and socialists. The liberal group — organized by MoveOn.org — decided to leave the park and move its potluck to a nearby home. Members of the conservative group followed, parking at the entrance of a private lane leading to the home to continue their protest. Roseburg Democrats Dean and Sara Byers said Monday they told tea party members who followed that they were not welcome to drive down the lane to their home. The Byerses said they got out of their car to stop vehicles from entering the driveway and one tea party member almost ran them over. Sara Byers said she was so shaken she called 911. She said a Douglas County deputy called about an hour and a half later and said he had been unable to respond because of other incidents. Byers said she was still considering filing a criminal complaint against members of the tea party for harassment. A leader of the tea party group, Rich Raynor of Roseburg, disputed the liberal group’s version of events. “They are liars,” said Raynor, director of Douglas County Americans for Prosperity. “That is what communists do.” The latter confrontations were not videotaped, but the Tea Partiers themselves proudly posted the video of their invasion of the MoveOn picnic. Moreover, it clearly documents how they effectively broke it up — by threatening the attendees with intimidating speech and making it clear they wanted the group to clear out. What it doesn’t show, of course, is that they followed these folks to someone’s private home and tried to invade the gathering on private property as well. Here’s the script the proud authors of the video provided: Self professed communist Van Jones teams up with MoveOn.org to promote the American Dream Project, aka I want what you have worked for. Promoted here by the Douglas County Democratic Central Committee members. Challenged by Americans who love freedom! I have an idea. Let’s end class warfare. If you want more, get up earlier and work harder. It works wonders for your self-respect. We had to disable comments. They were vile, vulgar, threatening…typical Chicago thuggery stuff. One thing that’s clear from both the script and from the video is that what has the Tea Partiers especially exercised about MoveOn is the fact that Van Jones is now working with them to promote his Rebuild the Dream project . The Tea Partiers kept repeating “Van Jones!” “Van Jones!” almost mantra-like, and then calling MoveOn a bunch of “communists.” This is the New McCartyhyism at work, thanks in no small part to the effective work of Glenn Beck during his misbegotten tenure at Fox News — the apotheosis of which was his successful attacks on Van Jones. We discussed this at length with Jones himself recently. And while he’s right that we can’t let these kinds of smears deflect or distract us from what we’re trying to achieve, there’s no doubt he also understands that they need to be knocked down fiercely and effectively. And the claim that Van Jones is a Communist is simply a baldfaced lie. Maybe every MoveOn member is now going to have to equip themselves with the words of Jones’ attorneys, in their letter to Fox News, on this matter: Mr. Jones is not a member of any Communist Party or Marxist organization whatsoever, and has not expressed any support for any form of Communist or Marxist ideology for many years. In the same 2005 article in which he Mr. Jones discussed having had such notions as a young man, he also talked about his growth away from those views. Mr. Jones has repeatedly clarified that his economic views are firmly pro-market, in numerous speeches, televised interviews and in the Huffington Post. In fact, Mr. Jones is known as a leading champion of free-market solutions to current environmental problems. His best-selling book, The Green Collar Economy (2009), advocates government policies to promote private-sector innovation. The World Economic Forum itself has repeatedly honored Mr. Jones’ work. He has been called the “Green” Jack Kemp, because he shares that GOP leader’s commitment to entrepreneurship as a cure for poverty. The allegations that Mr. Jones is an “unrepentant Communist,” “is a Communist,” “is a Communist guy,” and “is a revolutionary” are thus demonstrably and unequivocally false. Clearly these statements were calculated to, and do, injure Mr. Jones in his professional and community standing and lower him in the estimation of the American public. They are actionable as a matter of law. Liberal organizers have taken for granted far too long the toxic effects of these kinds of lies and smears — because they are exactly the kinds of smears that have always provided the bedrock of right-wing extremism and xenophobic scapegoating. And it’s especially remarkable that we’re seeing it happen with so many supposedly “conservative” mainstream and often elderly people lapping up the lies. This was clear from the report on the confrontation : Roseburg resident Lillen Fifield, 70, called the group’s actions an “act of domestic terrorism” and said she was appalled that a peaceful gathering — mostly of women older than 65 — was interrupted. “It is not OK to go around and intimidate and threaten people. That is not acceptable in a polite society,” Fifield said. Conservative organizers defended their actions and said they will continue to protest similar gatherings. “We were there to find out what they had to say and to bring a notice to the public that this kind of thing was going on. Quite honestly, if they have it again, then we are really going to make it well known,” Raynor said. Raynor said the group believes MoveOn.org is a communist front and said he would not stand for America becoming a fascist nation. It’s unsurprising that these Tea Partiers thus replicate Jonah Goldberg’s fraudulent scrambling of the meanings of “fascism” and “communism” , something that was avidly promoted on Fox by Beck and others as well. Likewise, it’s unsurprising that this obliteration-of-meaning-by-Newspeak would result in thuggish behavior remarkably like that deployed by brownshirts historically. The only strange thing was that it involved a bunch of senior citizens and middle-aged folks. It was obvious, for instance, that these people were hoping to provoke an angry response resulting in violence that they could then trot out as proof of liberal “thuggishness.” (That’s an old brownshirt tactic .) Fortunately, this particular gathering of progressives was smart enough to avoid that trap. As we see more of these attempts to provoke violence, though, I’m not so sure that’s going to continue happening. It’s all very disturbing. As Carla puts it : Clearly the fine details of what took place are in dispute. What isn’t, however, are the overt attempts at intimidation and bullying perpetuated by Raynor and the others that showed up to shut down a tiny, peaceful group who chose to meet to talk. Last I checked, that’s still allowed in the US. And while MoveOn is decidedly NOT communist, socialist or Marxist–it shouldn’t matter if they are. People in the United States are allowed to discuss and promote those ideas if that’s what they really believe. Why are Raynor and his ilk so desperately frightened? Are their own ideas and beliefs so weak that they can’t stand up to a miniscule group even having an opposition discussion about them?
