By Guy Adams 5:30 AM Thursday Oct 14, 2010 Share Email Print There were few words that Florencio Avalos could find to express the joy he felt when he finally reached the surface of the San Jose mine shortly after midnight local time. Just a smile as wide as the Atacama Desert as he stepped out of the Phoenix escape capsule and fell into the arms of the wife and two children he had last hugged almost 70 days ago. It was a magnificent sight to see, this remarkably healthy man breathing fresh air he must have thought he would never breathe again, and greeting the men who had brought him to the surface in one piece. When the red, white and blue cage broke through the top of the escape shaft, the…

Because of the way flat maps distort the size of countries (the closer they are to the poles, the more distorted they are), most people don’t really know just how big the African continent is. This leads many people – and the smart and powerful aren’t immune to this – to underestimate Africa’s importance. The map above shows just how wrong our perception can be (unless we’ve already seen a map like this before). It shows tha… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Tweeting from California, the Windmill State, Schwarzenegger said: I endorse Governor Charlie Crist for Senate. Great leader, works with both parties, and our country needs someone like him in D.C. right now. Inspiring, huh? Only a rudderless man like Schwarzenegger can look at a peer (Crist) for whom political expediency determines “principle” and label him a “great leader.” Does anyone but Schwarzenegger and Crist think an endorsement from a guy who went from charismatic conservative leader to spineless, flailing failure is going to inspire Floridians to vote for Charlie “I’m a Lovely Shade of Orange” Crist? Maybe we can get Schwarzenegger to endorse a few other people, like Lisa Murkowski, Harry Reid, Patty Murray, Richard Blumenthal, Bawney Fwank and Chris Coons.

Its announcing the EP Series of SSD drives, based on SandForce SF-2000-series processors, pledging 6Gb/s burst speeds. That sounds mighty impressive, but if you capitalize that B it turns into a somewhat less stunning figure of 768MB/s. Sequential read and write speeds are 500MB/s, while each can sustain a rate of 60,000 operations per second. That’s a lot of I/O, and it’s coming to gilded racks sometime in the first quarter of 2011.
