Corals Reveal Changes in Ocean Circulation, Prove Climate Modelers Correct

Photo via Ohio State University , credit Andrea Grottoli Climate modelers have predicted that a shift in global temperatures will slow the ocean’s natural circulation of warmer waters at the surface and colder waters near the sea floor, and it looks like that is exactly what is happening according to researchers at Ohio State University and the University of Toronto. They’ve found that corals in the western tropical Pacific Ocean, specifically Gorgonians shown above, reveal a shift in thermocline within their layers of growth, similar to how tree trunk rings … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Stuart Hughes strikes again with world’s most expensive, diamond covered iPhone 4

We’ve already established that if you’re filthy rich, you probably don’t want the same cell phone as common folk. No, if you’re looking for something higher end, you’ll probably end up talking to Stuart Hughes , who customizes electronics by plating them in gold and diamonds. We’ve already seen his work on a $20,000 iPhone 4 , but his latest achievement is downright ridiculous. Called the ‘world’s most expensive phone’ (we’ll see how long that lasts), Hughes made two identical models for an Australian client. Each handset includes over 500 diamonds and totals over 100 karats, and comes in its own special granite box. It’s total cost is

Police Raid Organic Raw Milk Co-op, Guns Drawn (Video)

… And Colbert Weighs In You may recall this story surfacing over the summer: A police squad raided Rawesome, an organic food co-op, guns drawn, because it was allegedly selling raw milk. Besides scaring the crap out of the management and organic shoppers, it created a stir in the organic food community. There’s been renewed controversy over the fact that the FDA designates raw milk’s to be illegal, and the severe — and wholly inappropriate — overreaction by the LAPD shown in the video certainly raises the stakes. Luckily, a certain uber-conservative satirist is on hand to sort the whole mess out: Video of the raid an… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Katell Gelebart Turns Food Packaging Into Haute Couture

Images: Katell Gelebart Given the recent bewildering consumer rejection of SunChips’ compostable packaging for its perceived over-crinkliness, you might wonder why would anyone bother with something like food packaging within the vicissitudes of fashion. Nevertheless, that’s what French designer Katell Gelebart has done with her deliciously colourful collection of wearable food packaging (anyone need a raincoat made out of Friskies? Mais oui !)…. So What If Telecommuting Did Encourage Travel? Travel Is Good

photo: Gopal Aggarwal / Creative Commons Yesterday my fellow TreeHugger Sami posed the question ‘ Does Telecommuting Encourage Travel? ‘ To which I respond, so what if it does? Travel is good. From the act of movement itself, to the experience of new places, people, cultures and ideas, travel is a good thing. Strike that. Travel is a great thing. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Banks Seize 288K Homes in Q3, Challenges Ahead

Lenders seized more homes this summer than in any three-month stretch since the housing market went bust in 2006. But many foreclosures may be challenged in court because of allegations that banks evicted people without reading the documents. (Oct. 14)
