Belkin’s Conserve Gateway checks in with the FCC, may be at your utility company

Belkin just got official with its Converse Gateway wireless energy monitoring system earlier this month, and already it looks to be making a beeline to your local utility company. As the temperatures drop and energy use skyrockets, this here setup is designed to attach to a smart meter on the exterior of your home and beam information about usage to your PC (in a nutshell, anyway). Any smart device that’s connected in your home can be listed in the UI, giving you a heads-up as to what youngster is burnin’ up the most juice when you leave on business for the weekend. Per usual, a stop by the FCC’s database generally signals a near-term release in the US of A, with Wireless Goodness suggesting that these are already starting to pop up around the country. Though, you’ll have to phone up your local energy company to inquire about a professional installation — we don’t get the impression that these are going to be stocked at Wally World. Another worthy addition to my teen driver collection : A teenager who just passed his driving test crashed into a state driver license center in western Pennsylvania. The accident happened Wednesday afternoon as the teen was trying to leave the parking lot of a driver license center in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville. Officials say at least three people were injured, but their injuries were not considered serious. Township police Sgt. Brian Halbleib told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the accident happened when the teen pulled into the parking lot of the driver license center to drop off the man who had administered the test. Halbleib says the teen thought the car was in park but it wasn’t. I’m guessing he’ll get the chance to try that again.

Weekday Vegetarian: Swiss Chard, Onion and Cheese Frittata

Photo: Kelly Rossiter Our cottage neighbours, the Johnson family , have been raising chickens for a year or so. Their young sons were keen to start a little business and they thought they would like to sell eggs. I thought they had six chickens, and not too many eggs. It turns out that they have eighteen chickens now and get almost that many eggs a … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Because they can’t : “Cell phones cannot cause cancer, because they do not emit enough energy to break the molecular bonds inside cells. Some forms of electromagnetic radiation, such as x-rays, gamma rays and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, are energetic enough to break the bonds in key molecules such as DNA and thereby generate mutations that lead to cancer. Electromagnetic radiation in the form of infrared light, microwaves, television and radio signals, and AC power is too weak to break those bonds, so we don’t worry about radios, televisions, microwave ovens and power outlets causing cancer.” We have bazillions of radio waves passing through our bodies all the time with little sign of damage (though liberalism could be traced to excessive exposure to MSNBC or NPR).

Keepin’ it real fake: Magic Mouse and iPhone converge into iPhonc

Do you dream at night? Do you stare at your ceiling pondering questions that no other Earthling could possibly ponder? Contrary to popular belief, you aren’t actually alone in this nightmare, and we too have wondered what would happen to our universe if a Magic Mouse and iPhone collided. Look up. Now down. Now back up again. That greenish, devilish device you see above is the iPhonc, a ” KIRF of all KIRFs,” if you will. It’s hard to pinpoint who exactly thought to shove a dumbphone into the body of a Magic Mouse, but in some strange way, they’ve managed to make our souls smile. Best of all? Even the source here admits that it’s meaningless to wonder over the specifications and price, noting that the shell alone should attract sufficient attention. Makes the fading of Meizu a little easier to handle, you know? Keepin’ it real fake: Magic Mouse and iPhone converge into iPhonc originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 19:13:00 EDT. Colorful Lobster Trio a "1 in 900 Quintillion" Sight

Images courtesy of the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk That’s ’9′ followed by 20 zeroes The probability of a lobster being born with a blue shell are about 1 in a million. For a calico or pumpkin-orange colored lobster, the odds are in the excess of 1 in 30 million. The chances of seeing all three variations in one place — well, let’s just say it’s mind-bogglingly slim. But one aquarium in Connecticut has managed to defy the odds with their once in a lifetime lobster exhibit…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Greeks Strike as Unemployment Rises

By NICK SKREKAS European Pressphoto Agency Riot police confront protesters at the Acropolis in Athens on Thursday. ATHENS—Greek labor tensions heightened Thursday, as a railway strike caused travel chaos and police and workers clashed outside the country’s most revered archeological treasure. The protest in the Greek capital represented yet another wave of dissent as the government tries to drag the country out of an unprecedented debt crisis and recession. It only narrowly avoided bankruptcy in May after agreeing to impose painful measures in exchange…
