Some advice for travelers – don’t bring your hoity-toity luggage to John Wayne Airport in Orange County: When Per Lindby got to John Wayne Airport on Aug. 4 for a trip to Rapid City, S.D., he checked his Louis Vuitton luggage and didn’t give it another thought. He flew Delta Air Lines, first class, connecting in Minneapolis. He arrived safely in Rapid City, but his luggage — a suitcase and a duffel bag — didn’t. He called the airline. When he told the Delta representative that his bags were Louis Vuitton, she told him not to hold his breath — they must have been stolen, he recalled. “I was told my suitcase didn’t even make it on the plane,” he said. Louis Vuitton is a luxury brand. Lindby said the suitcase cost $3,200 and the duffel $1,900. Lindby, a Yorba Linda resident who owns a company that makes motorcycle parts, was left with nothing to wear for his South Dakota business trip. “Luckily, it’s not a really well-dressed job I have to perform,” he said. Upon returning to Orange County, Lindby went to South Coast Plaza and bought new Louis Vuitton luggage. “We spend a lot of money on nice stuff because we make a pretty decent living,” he said of himself and his wife. “I guess when you make money, you buy some pretty stupid stuff sometimes.” On Aug. 19, Lindby again boarded a Delta flight at John Wayne Airport. Again, he checked a Louis Vuitton suitcase. This time, his final destination was Madison, Wis. Guess what? The bag didn’t make it to Madison. A Delta representative again told him he shouldn’t count on getting it back, he said. Lindby figures he’s out about $14,000 for the three pieces of luggage and their contents, which included Louis Vuitton shoes. Mr. Lindby finally learned his lesson: Lindby flew out of John Wayne again this week. This time, though, he wasn’t lugging Louis Vuitton. “I went to Wal-Mart and bought a suitcase for $30,” he said. Lindby and his Wal-Mart suitcase arrived without problems in Daytona Beach on Wednesday. Of course, no one should have their stuff stolen regardless of what it costs, but when you travel with luggage that costs that much and is easily recognized you’re kind of asking for it. Especially when you consider that your luggage will be out of your view for hours at a time and in the hands of people who can make more money selling your luggage than they can working their jobs for a week or two. It’s like people who drive black Cadillac Escalades.

Puma Phone review

So it’s true, we’re living in an age where people would shamelessly line up for certain electronics and luxurious fashion items. Why? Just because they can. As such, some swanky outlets — namely Christian Dior , Prada , Giorgio Armani , Dolce Gabbana , and Versace — have attempted to exploit our gadget lust by offering self-branded phones at extortionate prices. In the eyes of every-day consumers, there’s really not much appeal in these soulless devices except for the logo and some extra bling, but apparently these two factors alone are enough to make some aficionados drool a river. On the other hand, Puma — a less luxurious but naturally more accessible fashion brand — has decided to do more than just slapping an OS skin onto its aptly-named Puma Phone . Priced at a comparably affordable

Nicknamed “Antilia” after a mythical island, we’ve also called it one of the dumbest so-called ‘green’ buildings ever . No wonder too — de… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Syrian, Saudi leaders to discuss Lebanon, Iraq

RIYADH (Reuters) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Saudi Arabia on Sunday for talks with King Abdullah expected to focus on tension in Lebanon over a U.N.-backed tribunal and the political void in Iraq. The Saudi state news agency SPA gave no details about the talks after Assad began his second trip to the world’s top oil exporting country this year, the latest sign of a thaw in bilateral relations. The meeting comes a few days after a state visit to Lebanon by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, whose disputed atomic energy programme Riyadh fears…

Pentagon braces for huge WikiLeaks dump on Iraq war

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Pentagon said on Sunday it had a 120-member team prepared to review a massive leak of as many as 500,000 Iraq war documents, which are expected to be released by the WikiLeaks website sometime this month. Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan told Reuters the timing of the leak remained unclear but the Defense Department was ready for a document dump as early as Monday or Tuesday, a possibility raised in previous WikiLeaks statements. Still, people familiar with the upcoming leak told Reuters they…

American Thinker asks all you libs out there how you would have reacted if George W. Bush had done the things Obama has done: If George W. Bush had doubled the national debt in one year, would you have approved? If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within ten years, would you have concurred? If George W. Bush had criticized a state law that he admitted he never even read, would you think he was just an ignorant hothead? If George W. Bush joined the country of Mexico and sued a state in the United States to force that state to continue to allow illegal immigration, would you question his patriotism and wonder whose side he was on? If George W. Bush had put 87,000 workers out of work by arbitrarily placing a moratorium on offshore oil drilling merely because one company had an accident, would you have thought this was disproportionate and harmful to American workers? If George W. Bush had forced a change in your health care coverage even though the majority of people did not seek or approve of these changes, would you begin to worry about an abuse of power by the executive branch of the government? If George W. Bush continually bashed the United States and seemed to side with known dictators, would you feel comfortable?… If George W. Bush had stated that there were 57 states in the United States, would you have said that he is an embarrassment?… If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest, with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans during Katrina, would you wonder if this lack of assistance had racial overtones? Clearly you would have been incensed by the gross incompetence — wouldn’t you?… If George W. Bush had ignored outright voting rights violations and did not recommend that the Department of Justice render justice, would you begin to wonder if the man was the president of all the people or just some of the people? There are a lot more. Read them here .

Shinobii’s table tennis bat for Wii hitting shelves soon for $70

Remember that prototype Wii tablet tennis controller that was reviewed (and adored) recently? You know — the one that had no official maker and no official release date? Turns out that very device is made by Shinobii Technologies, and the outfit is finally coming clean with a bona fide version that’s suitable for public release. The TT Champion Bat is said to be a true 1:1 replica of an actual table tennis paddle in both size and weight, and the electronics required to interact with the Wii console are all integrated; in other words, this is your Wiimote when playing a tennis or ping pong title. There’s also a rechargeable battery within to keep things humming along, and best of all, it’ll soon be available online and at traditional video game retailers throughout the EU and North America for $69.99. Hello, stocking stuffer. Ah, true love … Upon exiting the most recent debate with Barney Frank, located at WGBH studios in Boston, MA, Republican Congressional candidate, Sean Bielat, gets heckled by a Barney Frank “supporter” while talking to the media. While watching this video, we realized that we recognized this “supporter”. We received confirmation from two eyewitnesses that the mysterious cameraman was none other than Barney Frank’s pot-growing boyfriend, James Ready. That’s not even the strangest campaign story today. In Kentucky the liberal left Democrat running for Senate is attacking his opponent, Rand Paul, for his religion .

Preserving the Sound of Silence in Zion National Park

Zion National Park. Photo: Rene Schwietzke / Creative Commons . With many roads closed today for a marathon cutting through the city, parts of Istanbul were wonderfully — if eerily — quiet and peaceful. Though I’ve become accustomed to the constant drone of urban noise, its occasional absence reminds me just how much sound is a key, if little-considered, aspect of how we experience places, whethe… Read the full story on TreeHugger
