A new euphemism for illegal aliens was created during the Maryland governor’s debate: Did I hear Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, D, right during his second debate with former Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich? Did O’Malley call illegal immigrants “new Americans”? Good thing I recorded that debate on a DVD. I replayed it Saturday night, and O’Malley’s exact quote was this, part of his response to a question about illegal immigration. “There is this nativism rising up and this desire to blame new Americans for the problems in our economy.” Yeah, he said it. And Ehrlich was quick to pounce on the gaffe. “If somebody breaks in my house, is that a new member of my family that night?” The level to which both parties go to pander to the Hispanic vote is really disgusting.

Vertu Constellation Quest shows up at the FCC, running Symbian and looking pleasantly outrageous

Ah, Vertu, where would we be without you? Richer, to be sure, but so very bored . Vertu’s QWERTY-packing Constellation Quest has just gotten the FCC’s stamp of approval, and in addition to the typical beauty shots the FCC includes, there’s also a detailed manual that shows the phone to be running some heavily skinned version of Symbian. The phone has HSDPA data and WiFi, and Vertu is even packing along a 32GB microSD card. There’s still plenty we don’t know about the phone, like when it will hit stores and how many arms and legs it will cost, but for now we’re just happy to have “cray Uncle Vertu” around for the party. Urban Farm Prototypes Reveal the Future of Urban Agriculture (Slideshow)

Photo Credit: GrowingCities Saranga Nakhooda and Devin Lafo founded GrowingCities as “a research and design think-tank for urban agriculture.” Looking at tight urban spaces, they have developed five innovative prototypes for urban farming. The ideas range from a small windowsill garden to a full-blown high density neighbourhood focusing on food production and distribution. Like the output of most think tanks, some of the ideas are sketchy but others may well bear fruit, so to speak.
