With only one week to go in a very tough election race, Carly Fiorina didn’t need this : Republican Carly Fiorina’s Senate campaign in California released this statement today: “Carly learned more than a year and a half ago that she, like millions of women, had breast cancer. After successfully battling cancer, she had reconstructive surgery this summer and remains cancer free today. However, this morning Carly came down with an infection associated with the reconstructive surgery and, as a result, she was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics to treat this infection. While this will impact her campaign schedule today, Carly is upbeat and her doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery and be back out on the campaign trail soon. Carly is looking forward to getting back to her full campaign schedule and to defeating Barbara Boxer on November 2.” Hurry back – America can’t afford another six years of Barbara “Dumb-as-a-Box-of-Rocks” Boxer. Can Green Walls Beside Highways Actually Reduce Temperature and Pollution?

A new project to turn a highway structure into a living wall in Buenos Aires. Photos: Paula Alvarado. The Buenos Aires government is doing a six month tryout of how green walls perform in the city’s highways as noise, temperature and pollution mitigators. Installed inside horizontal tubes filled with water and nutrients, the first seedlings were planted in the exit of a route that connects the southern part of the city with the suburbs. But, do green walls next to motorways do any good at all?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

George Soros Makes the Case for Legal Weed

The billionaire investor/activist has written a well-reasoned essay in the Wall Street Journal arguing for an end to marijuana prohibition. The L.A. Times reports that in California, Soros is backing the cause with more than words. California’s Prop 19, as Soros explains, “would legalize the recreational use and small-scale cultivation of marijuana.” The billionaire is reportedly helping to fund the initiative, as is the guy from the Men’s Wearhouse commercials. At least one law enforcement official, Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca, says he’ll ignore the proposition if it passes. Baca, who told reporters he has “hell no” never smoked marijuana, just wants to live in a world where teenagers and glaucoma patients don’t blow smoke in his face: “If you want to do a joint in your house, do it. Leave the rest of us alone.”

China’s Shanghai-Hangzhou rail line opens, hits record breaking speed of 262mph

High speed railways, particularly in Asia, have been soaring at around 200 miles per hour for quite some time now, but given just how much pride the Chinese have in their own rail system , it’s no shock to hear the entire nation gloating about a new speed record. Of course, we’re pretty partial to records ourselves, so we’ll happily open up a round of applause when a bullet train hits 262 miles per hour without imploding. The newfangled Shanghai-Hangzhou connection (which connects Hongqiao and Hangzhou) has gone into service today, with most riders treated to a top speed of only 220 miles per hour. Officials have already stated that they’re hoping to improve speeds to over 312 miles per hour, with other nations reportedly anxious to get ahold of their technology. Oh, and if you’re curious about details, the CRH380 train covers 126 miles in just 45 minutes, with seats starting as low as $12.
