UN seals historic treaty to protect threatened ecosystems

NAGOYA ‘ A historic global treaty to protect the world’s forests, coral reefs and other threatened ecosystems within 10 years was sealed at a UN summit on Saturday. Rich and poor nations agreed to take “effective and urgent” action to curb the destruction of nature in an effort to halt the loss of the world’s biodiversity on which human survival depends. Delegates from 193 countries committed to key goals such as curbing pollution, protecting forests and coral reefs, setting aside areas of land and water for conservation, and managing fisheries sustainably. “This is a day to celebrate,” UN Environment Programme chief Achim Steiner said straight after the accord was struck early on Saturday…

Canon PowerShot G12 scores predictably glowing review

If it’s a pocketable PowerShot and its name begins with ‘G’ you can be pretty sure it’ll be a good performer, and Canon ‘s latest is no exception. The $499 G12 is the sequential successor to the G11 and, as is typical for the range, it isn’t a revolutionary leap forward. The G12 makes use of its predecessor’s 10 megapixel sensor situated behind the same 5x zoom lens and offering the same suite of full manual controls. New this year is a 720p24 video recording mode with stereo mics, finally bringing this camera into the HD age — but sadly doing so without use of that zoom. Also new is an HDR mode, stitching together three photos to make those vampires hiding in the shadows really pop. According to Photography Blog those improvements plus a few other niceties make this a particularly solid compact, even if its chunky dimensions as ever push the definition of that term. MENTAWAI ISLANDS, Indonesia-A group of private aid workers battled fierce swells and driving rain that kept most craft on shore, managing to deliver food and other supplies to desperate survivors on the islands hardest hit by a tsunami that killed at least 413 people. Hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the east, a volcano that has claimed 36 lives in recent days erupted again early Saturday, temporarily forcing shut an airport. Plumes of heavy gray ash poured from the crater’s mouth as rocks and debris cascaded down its slopes. The twin catastrophes, striking on different ends of the seismically active country this week, have severely tested Indonesia’s emergency response network. Government…
