This could have been pretty ugly: It was a real scare at the 160 year old Majestic Theatre in downtown Chillicothe. A fire broke out in the stage area inside the theatre and firefighters say a hot lamp caught the stage curtain on fire. It was put out quickly but two people were treated for breathing in too much smoke. A gospel singing group was performing at the time of the fire and many people got out safely. The Majestic Theatre was built in the mid 1800′s and became a medical ward for injured Civil War soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Sherman. The group was The Nelons , a family group I’ve worked with a number of times in Rockport, TX, and years ago here in the Los Angeles area. Three of the members were treated for smoke inhalation, but everybody’s okay.

Apple’s dead pixel policy leaks out, up to 15 anomalies ‘acceptable’ on 22-inch and above screens?

There’s nothing quite like coming home with a shiny new laptop only to find tiny black and white dots peppering your LCD, especially when the screen’s manufacturer tells you that you’re plumb out of luck. If you buy Apple, that scenario might honestly play out just the same, but the chart above could save you an embarrassing argument at your local Genius Bar. According to the allegedly leaked internal document , Apple has a set of precise charts that determine whether or not it will replace your LCD — a single dead pixel will save an iPod or iPhone, for instance, and Apple will tolerate only two on an iPad IPS screen. We’re sorry to say it’s not the same if you buy Mac, as you could have a staggering fifteen dead pixels on that pricey Cinema Display and still have to pick up the tab. Hang on to those receipts, folks. Apple’s dead pixel policy leaks out, up to 15 anomalies ‘acceptable’ on 22-inch and above screens? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 00:54:00 EDT. ‘Peace Meals’: Breaking Bread With War’s Forgotten Families

This was a bogus complaint from the start: The U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department has dismissed a civil rights complaint against against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate. The complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.had accused the unidentified 31-year-old woman of posting an ad that “expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths.” HUD acknowledged that statements suggesting a preference for one religion are prohibited, but it concluded that the woman in this case didn’t violate the law. “In light of the facts provided and after assessing the unique context of the advertisement and the roommate relationship involved in this particular situation potentially involving the sharing of personal religious beliefs, the Department defers to Constitutional considerations in reaching its conclusion. Accordingly, the Department finds that there is no reasonable cause to believe that the Act was violated in this matter,” HUD said. Joel Oster, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund, which represented the woman free of charge, had described the case as “outrageous.” “Clearly this woman has a right to pick and choose who she wants to live with,” he said. “Christians shouldn’t live in fear of being punished by the government for being Christians. It is completely absurd to try to penalize a single Christian woman for privately seeking a Christian roommate at church — an obviously legal and constitutionally protected activity.” Freedom of religion issues aside, there’s also a protection for freedom of association that might have come into play. The government has no right to tell us with whom we can or cannot live.

Ask Engadget: best passive noise cancelling headphones?

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Alex, who just can’t take the noise, dude. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com . “Hello Engadget. I’ve always been a fan of high quality audio but I have a problem. I need noise cancelling headphones, but active noise cancelling gives me a headache and my ear canals aren’t round enough to use in-ear earphones. I’ve also looked into custom earphones but I can’t afford paying $400 or more for a set. What are your recommendations for the best pair of passive noise cancelling headphones? My ears thank you.” We will say that Klipsch’s oval ear tips tend to fit in funky ear canals that typically reject round ones, but if you’re still hellbent on a pair of cans, we’re hoping our audience below can toss out some advice. If they can hear us from underneath their noise cancelling headphones, of course.
