T-Mobile G2 gets a permanent, honest-to-goodness root

You can slow ‘em down , HTC… but you can’t stop ‘em. That’s the message that xda-developers is sending loud and clear today on news that the T-Mobile G2 has graduated from a temporary root solution to a permanent one, despite HTC’s attempt to lock it down tight in hardware. Interestingly, the solution involves starting with the already-tried-and-true temporary root and applying a few additional steps; as always, you want to be careful with these sorts of things, but we’ve no doubt there are thousands of G2 owners out there who’ve already beaten us to the punch. Let us know how it goes, won’t you? [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] T-Mobile G2 gets a permanent, honest-to-goodness root originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 11:33:00 EDT. George W. Bush’s new book comes out today and in interviews promoting he’s certainly unapologetic about using waterboarding to get information from terrorists : George W. Bush has claimed that information extracted from terrorist suspects by “waterboarding” saved British lives by preventing attacks on Heathrow and Canary Wharf. In an exclusive interview with The Times, the former US President offered a vigorous defence of the coercive interrogation technique: “Three people were waterboarded and I believe that decision saved lives.” He denied that waterboarding, which simulates drowning, amounted to torture. Asked if he authorised the use of waterboarding to get information from the captured al-Qaeda leader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, he was unequivocal: “Damn right!” In his new book he writes: “Their interrogations helped break up plots to attack American diplomatic facilities abroad, Heathrow airport and Canary Wharf in London, and multiple targets in the United States.” The reaction from the left and those who consider waterboarding to be torture has been pretty predictable. They scoff at the idea that lives were saved, or that saved lives make the procedure acceptable.

Michael Cooper’s lead story in the National section of the New York Times on Saturday, ” Debunking the Myths of the Midterm ,” offered up four alleged myths downplaying the import of the Republican takeover of the House and big gains in the Senate. The first four of Cooper's five “myths” centered around the idea that the Republican victory and Democratic defeat of 2010 had been overstated (the fifth was a paragraph of throwaway humor headlined “The Pundits Have a Clue” while arguing the opposite). Every election develops its own mythology, usually before the official results are even certified, and this week’s was no different. And like all mythology, the narrative that is being woven around the midterm elections by Bulfinches from both parties is a blend of history, facts and, yes, myths. But the four partisan myths Cooper tried to knock down were all ones that made Republicans look strong. “Return to the Republican Fold” (Cooper denied it.) “The Sweeping Mandate” (No way.) “The Lost Youth Vote” (Not so fast.) “A Disaster for the President” (Not necessarily.) On March 26, Cooper wrote on how “ vandalism threatened to be a public relations disaster for the fledgling Tea Party movement ,” suggesting his political analysis isn’t foolproof. read more

Next Step On Climate? We Have A Choice.

Barbarians At The Gate, a TV movie. Image credit: Wikipedia The next step in US climate action is predetermined. The trajectory stands out like contrails across the sky. First noted in the late 50′s, scientific evidence of man-made climate change was largely ignored for almost a half-century. Commensurate with a strengthening scientific consensus in the 1990′s, however, the risks of climate change were brought to a much broader audience by Al Gore and James Hanson. Push-back by oil gas and coal interests intensif… Read the full story on TreeHugger
