Violent crime is down for the fourth year in a row, the FBI says. Last year, it fell 6%, accompanied by a 2.7% drop in property crime—which has also steadily fallen for the past eight years, the AP reports. Some 1.2 million violent crimes and 9 million…

Tea Party Candidate: ‘Boehner Is A Socialist’

Click here to view this media A Republican tea party candidate running for Ohio’s 8th Congressional District declared Monday that House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was a “socialist.” David Lewis told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that he hopes to defeat Boehner in the Republican primary by running on the tea party platform. “John Boehner is a socialist,” Lewis explained. “I’m not calling him names.” “Socialist!” Cavuto objected. “Now, David, come on. That’s a little extreme.” “It’s an economic policy. I’m not calling names,” Lewis insisted. “Here is someone that refuses to phase out Social Security. What I would do as a U.S. House member is work to phase out Social Security totally. 100 percent. That includes Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps. These are socialist policies.” “Does the tea party have your back?” Cavuto asked. “I believe so… The tea party is still trying to figure out whether they believe in socialist policies,” Lewis replied. “David, that’s a strong term to use. You know, many have been using it about liberals and those in Congress who want bigger and better government and all of that stuff. But you can call John Boehner probably a lot of things, but the socialist thing, don’t you think that’s a little over the top?” Cavuto wondered. Last September, Cavuto didn’t seem to mind as much when Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus told him that President Barack Obama was a “socialist at heart.”

Eleanor Mondale Dies: Daughter Of Former Vice President Walter Mondale Dies At 51

MINNEAPOLIS — Eleanor Mondale, the vivacious daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale who carved out her own reputation as an entertainment reporter, radio show host and gossip magnet, has died at her home in Minnesota. She was 51. Mondale, who had been diagnosed with brain cancer years earlier, died early Saturday, said family spokeswoman Lynda Pedersen said. In a statement emailed to friends, the former vice president said he and his wife “must report that our wonderful daughter, Eleanor Mondale Poling, after her long and gutsy battle against cancer, went up to heaven last night to be with her angel.” Eleanor Mondale had been off the air at WCCO-AM in Minneapolis since March 19, 2009, when she announced that her brain cancer had returned a second time. She had surgery to remove the tumor Aug. 12, 2009, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a posting on her CaringBridge website declared the surgery a success. Mondale, the middle of three children born to Walter and Joan Mondale, stumped for her father in his failed campaign to unseat President Ronald Reagan in 1984. She also made calls in her father’s last campaign in 2002, when the former vice president took the ballot slot of Minnesota’s U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, who died in a plane crash just days before the election. A striking blonde known on the party circuit when she was younger, Eleanor Mondale also attracted gossip. Her dalliance with the late rock musician Warren Zevon was detailed in “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon,” a posthumous biography published by Zevon’s ex-wife in 2007. Mondale started as an aspiring actress, with bit parts in television’s “Three’s Company” and “Dynasty.” She got her start in broadcasting as an entertainment reporter at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis in 1989. She left the station after eight months, when a Twin Cities magazine was about to publish an article called, “Walter and Joan’s Wild Child,” that quoted her as saying “I like to get wild. But it’s not murder, and I don’t do drugs.” Mondale denied she was forced out of the job, The Star Tribune reported. After stints at Minneapolis radio station WLOL-FM, on cable television at E! Entertainment and ESPN and network TV on CBS’ “This Morning,” she returned to Minnesota in 2006 to co-host a weekday morning show on WCCO-AM with Susie Jones. “I was terrified of her at first,” Jones said Saturday. “She was so big, but you talked to her for a minute and you realized she was just as regular as you could expect … She was uncanny, she was unpredictable. She sparkled. She was gorgeous inside and out.” She added later: “I’m going to miss her so much.” In 2005, Mondale was diagnosed with brain cancer after suffering two seizures during a camping trip. The tumor nearly disappeared after Mondale had chemotherapy and radiation, but her cancer returned in 2008. She underwent surgery and was able to return to WCCO but eventually had to take disability leave to treat the recurrence. “She would send me texts about how her (cancer) scan was. She had it every six weeks, and she would report how it was and how big it was. She hated that part,” said Jones, who visited Mondale on Thursday to say goodbye. “She fought very hard. She did not want to die. She had a lot of dignity in the end, and died quietly and beautifully.” Mondale was married three times: to Chicago Bears offensive lineman Keith Van Horne, to fellow DJ Greg Thunder and to Twin Cities rock musician Chan Poling of The Suburbs. Mondale and Poling married in 2005, shortly after her cancer was diagnosed, and lived on a farm near Prior Lake in the southern Twin Cities with miniature horses, cats, chickens, dogs and a cockatoo. Along with her parents and husband, Mondale is survived by two brothers, Ted and William. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Lion Ultimatum brings desktop-like functionality and file manager to jailbroken iOS (video)

Sure, OS X Lion borrowed many of its design cues from Apple’s iOS platform, but now users of jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch devices may bring much of the desktop Mac’s functionality onto their handset with Lion Ultimatum. In essence, this beta project is a theme for Dreamboard (which is required software), but it’s rather far-reaching, with a functional file manager and Finder menus, a scrollable dock and draggable windows, along with Stacks, Launchpad, Mission Control and Dashboard. There’s also a customizable lock screen that provides access to the dialer, email and messages. Even the keyboard can be modified to resemble the design of MacBook Pro or the traditional Apple Keyboard, thanks to integration with ColorKeyboard. If you’re thirsty for more, hop the break for an extended video preview, or just follow the source for the full install instructions. [Thanks, Adam] Continue reading Lion Ultimatum brings desktop-like functionality and file manager to jailbroken iOS (video) Lion Ultimatum brings desktop-like functionality and file manager to jailbroken iOS (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 22:14:00 EDT. Media Myth Debunked: Millionaires Don’t Pay Less Tax as Percent of Income Than Lower Earners

As President Obama trots out his new “Buffett Rule” to raise taxes on millionaires, the media are predictably assisting his efforts by spreading misinformation about the wealthy paying less taxes than lower wage earners as a percent of income. 2009 tax figures recently released by the Internal Revenue Service thoroughly refute this assertion: The chart above is an abbreviated version of the IRS's 2009 Table 1.1 “Selected Income and Tax Items.” Unfortunately, I wasn't able to include in this picture data for folks making under $10,000 due to spacial limitations. For those interested, people making “$1 under $5,000″ paid 11.9 percent of taxable income and 4.8 percent of Adjusted Gross Income less deficit. “$5,000 under $10,000″ was 10.2 percent and 4.8 percent respectively. For those wondering what the “less deficit” means, from the research I've done, it appears that for the purposes of these tables, the IRS subtracts AGI losses – those returns that actually showed a loss on line 37 of form 1040 – from all of the gains to give an accurate reading of the AGI in each income bracket. That said, readers should notice that folks with AGIs and taxable incomes of “$75,000 under $100,000″ paid 8.5 percent and 12.3 percent respectively. Even at the $100,000 under $200,000″ level, taxes were 11.9 percent and 16.3 percent respectively. Yet when you get to $500,000 and over, the numbers jump to as high as 25.8 percent and 29.7 percent respectively. That certainly isn't what the media are telling you, is it? To be sure, at the $10 million and over number, taxes drop a bit because these folks clearly make more of their total income in investments than most people. However, even these folks paid higher percentages than anyone making less than $500,000 AGI or TI. Wouldn't it be nice if so-called journalists actually shared this information with the public rather than the “rich aren't paying their fare share” nonsense we constantly hearing and read?
