Couric Illustrates the Sad Story Victimization Which Fuels the Government Spending She, for Once, Frets

Very unusually, CBS’s Katie Couric promised a look Thursday night at “how runaway government spending has exploded the national debt,” but between that segment and her show’s lead story, an “exclusive” interview with debt commission co-chairmen Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, Couric illustrated how she and the media are an impediment to rational spending decisions since they paint any decision to not spend more in terms of how that will hurt people. To wit, she despaired:

Seabird That Soars In Air and Water Inspires New Flying/Swimming Robot

Photo via Wikipedia The common guillemot is a seabird with a smart strategy for fishing. It can fly over the water with straight wings, but when it dives into the water to catch it’s prey, it swims with bent wings. The bend in the wing reduces drag, and it is this morphing wing that has inspired researchers to come up with a robot that can both fly and swim — something brand new in the biomimicry world. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

On the Street…. Gianluca Bocache, Rome

Finally I found A great mens shop in Rome! Run by Gianluca Bocache (above) and Andrea Luparelli, the shop is super chic and specializes in custom suits and shoes. I hate to admit it but I always judge a shop by the owners and these guys are cool. I love a peak lapel suit, however the question is always one or two-button. I always go peak with one-button but I’m swayed by Gianluca’s two-button swagger. Unfortuneately my shooting schedule in Rome was so tight (made worse by the never ending rain) I wasn’t able to shoot the shop but it will give me a reason to return to Rome asap. If you find yourself in the Eternal City here is their shop info. SARTORIA RIPENSE: Via di Ripetta, 38 00186 Roma +39 06 323 3727 info@sartoriaripense.com SARTORIA RIPENSE

I’m no fan of Steny Hoyer and did not want to see him take over leadership for the Dems in the House, but the latest from him is quite encouraging to the upcoming narrative. Greg Sargent: Steny Hoyer, the number two in the House Dem leadership, told Democrats at a caucus meeting this morning that they would get to vote this year on just extending the Bush tax cuts for the middle class, a senior Dem aide tells me, signaling support for a confrontational move towards the GOP that liberals have been pushing. Asked if Democrats would definitely get a chance to hold this vote, the senior aide responded: “Definitely.” Hoyer’s declaration comes as Democrats have been debating the way forward on the Bush tax cuts, and another aide tells me that “more than half” of the Dem caucus supports this course of action. The move indicates that House Dems are growing more resolved to draw a hard line on the Bush tax cuts, forcing Republicans to choose between supporting Obama’s tax plan and opposing a tax cut for the middle class. However, the way forward still remains murky. Even if such a measure were to pass in the House, it’s unclear whether the Senate will agree to such a vote, and the White House has not endorsed the approach. What’s more, the vote could conceivably go down, or alternatively, Republicans might successfully mount a procedural response, known as a “motion to recommit,” that could also force a House vote on the high end cuts. I have not been able to determine how House Dems might respond to such a move. For all these reasons, this House move does not preclude a deal being reached in the end on a temporary extension of all the cuts. And plans could still change: The House Dem leadership has yet to publicly endorse this plan. I expect the Republicans to oppose this and try to say that if the Bush tax cuts do expire like they are supposed to, then it amounts to a tax increase and they will be against it. A deal on these tax cuts could be waged, but this is the kind of response we’ve wanted from Democrats for a long time. Draw a battle line and push. Digby lays odds on how effective the GOP will be able to convince Americans that up is down when it comes to taxes: Michael Steel, a spokesman for John Boehner, emails a response to the news that House Dems are planning to hold a vote just on extending the middle class tax cuts: “The last thing our economy needs right now is a massive tax hike on families and small businesses — and that’s what this plan would mean.” This is classic up-isdownismm, a craft perfected by George W. Bush and one that’s making a big comeback. (I expect to see it put into use on the TeaPartierss as well.) I think Obama should polish up his “hoodwinked and bamboozled” speech and hit this hard before too many people are convinced that the Democrats are voting to raise taxes and all the allegedly liberal gasbags on TV screw it up by blubbering defensively about what constitutes a small business or whether or not someone who makes 250k a year is middle class. (You know they will.) Sadly, I haven’t gotten the idea that Obama particularly wants to have this fight. All polling data has shown that Americans want tax rates to go back to the way they were before Bush took over, so no matter what the GOP response is, they have to fight for messaging. VP Biden is on Morning Joe tomorrow and I hope he’s on board with this message because The Scar will pepper him with the GOP narrative. Don’t wilt now. And I’m no big fan of even having a tax cut argument because it always benefits the conservative frame, but in this case it’s playing the best hand that we have.

Weekday Vegetarian: Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad with Red Onion, Lemon and Pecorino

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I came to Brussels sprouts late in life because my parents didn’t like them so never made them, and somehow I had managed to bypass them for years after that. Then I discovered the magic in pan frying them until they get brown and nutty tasting, and now it’s one of my favourite fall vegetables. They are also fantastic in a bean stew . I’ve wanted to try out a raw shaved sprout recipe for awhile and this seemed the perfect opportunity t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Toyota debuts 100 mile Tesla-powered RAV4 EV, Musk says it ‘helps us with the Model S’

Toyota and Tesla have been spotted holding hands behind the school gym on numerous occasions and now, finally, the result of their long hours working together in the craft room are being shown to the world. It’s the RAV4 EV, announced earlier this year and finally unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Current pre-production models are delivering 100 miles per charge but apparently still need some climate-proofing to ensure that the 2012 version will hit that range regardless of conditions. That’s a big deal for a big SUV, and of course it’s a big deal for Tesla, which is providing the powertrain. It’s also a good news for Elon Musk, surely injecting some much-needed funding to the company and, as he says, introducing other benefits as well: We’re giving Toyota a window into the entrepreneurial, Silicon Valley culture and, vice versa, we’re getting a sense for the Toyota production system… I think we’re learning a lot form Toyota, bidirectionally, in this process and I think that helps us with the Model S. Having access to Lexus components in the supply chain is also helpful. In other words, expect the production Model S interior to be a little less fanciful and a little more familiar.
