Hibernating Off The Grid At Wilbur Hot Springs

photo: Ricardo Vacapinta under a creative commons license As colder temperatures crept into the Bay area this weekend, my toes began to get that familiar chill and I started to dream about hibernating until Spring. One place that alleviated this feeling and the countdown until Summer (201 days!) was Wilbur Hot Springs. I’m reluctant to sing Wilbur’s praise, for fear that it will soon become too difficult to obtain a same day reservation, but the natural hot mineral waters and lack of cell phone reception, make it a perfect winter weekend escape from rainy day blues. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Cam Edwards of NRANews.com reported on Friday night that there's a really under-reported story out there. President Obama nominated a new head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives — a local ATF agent from Chicago that's drawing serious opposition from gun-rights groups. Patrik Jonsson of The Christian Science Monitor is one of the few news reporters to notice: ATF special agent Andrew Traver, who last year let a TV reporter fire an AK-47 from her hip to demonstrate the weapon's lethality, is set to become America's chief firearms inspector. But Mr. Traver, currently the Chicago ATF chief, faces a tough nomination battle as gun-rights groups amass their forces in opposition. read more

Autonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climb

They said they’d do it , and by golly, it’s been done — a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. ( Google , eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Thankfully, he survived to fly another day, and at least some of the footage pulled through as well; you’ll find a brief clip after the break of the shiny white Quattro autonomously speeding up that hill. Pope’s Condom Use Comment Seen As ‘Positive’

Parishioners at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington greeted Pope Benedict XVI’s comments on condoms as a sign that the church was stepping into the modern debate in the fight against AIDS. But many Catholics are looking for clarification. (Nov. 21)

Notion Ink Adam gains a flashy website, adds a touchpad to its backside

Rohan Shravan’s Notion Ink Adam may have a ways to go , but his company’s certainly got a beautiful new website, showing off the fabled Tegra 2 tablet with the Pixel Qi screen and fabulous battery life in all its conceptual glory. We’ll be darned if the tablet doesn’t have a new feature, too, in the form of a trackpad on the unit’s back, described as providing “all the functionality and freedom of the main touch surface” when you’re holding the device with a single hand. We’d chide Rohan for the continual feature creep, but as long as he doesn’t venture into Duke Nukem Forever vaporware territory in his quest for perfection, we’re honestly happy to wait. It’s not like we’re running out of half-baked tablets to try these days. Get a peek at the promo website at our source link below. Would Clinton submit to a pat-down? ‘Not if I could avoid it’

Click here to view this media Count Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as another traveler who is not a fan of the new security procedures at airports. CBS’ Bob Schieffer asked Clinton Sunday if she would submit to a pat-down by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent. “Not if I could avoid it,” she replied. “No. I mean who would?” President Barack Obama defended the TSA body scans and pat-downs as necessary at a NATO press conference Saturday. Obama sympathized with the passengers who complain about the security procedures but said balancing privacy and security is a “tough situation.” “One of the most frustrating aspects of this fight against terrorism is that it has created a whole security apparatus around us that causes a huge inconvenience for all of us,” Obama said. As president, Obama is not personally subjected to security checks. Clinton agreed with Obama that the TSA should work to make checks less invasive. “I think everyone, including our security experts, are looking for ways to diminish the impact on the traveling public,” Clinton told NBC’s David Gregory. “I mean obviously the vast, vast majority of people getting on these planes are law abiding citizens who are just trying to get from one place to another. But let’s not kid ourselves. The terrorists are adaptable,” she continued. “Striking the right balance is what this is about. And I am absolutely confident that our security experts are gonna keep trying to get it better and less intrusive and more precise,” Clinton said. “Everybody is trying to do the right thing and I understand how difficult it is, and how offensive it must be for the people who are going through it.”

Ireland requests tens of billions in loans from EU

November 21, 2010: 4:23 PM ET (CNN) — Ireland has formally requested substantial “financial assistance” from the European Union to buttress the government and bolster its struggling banking sector, Prime Minister Brian Cowen said Sunday night. The European Union has agreed to accept the request, and negotiations are currently under way to determine the exact loan amount, as well as its terms, according to Cowen. Brian Lenihan, Ireland’s financial minister, said that the country would ask for less than 100 billion euros from the EU and International Monetary Fund. The comments came at a Dublin news conference around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, which followed a meeting of Cowen’s Cabinet. At that…
