A report on the symbiotic relationship between far-right extremists and the Tea Parties

Click here to view this media A couple of months ago I traveled out to Montana as part of a project examining how the extremist right — particularly the Patriot movement — has embedded itself within the Tea Party movement, particularly on a local level in rural areas where elements of the 1990s militia movement were still lurking. This includes Hamilton, Montana. The piece is now up at AlterNet: “We Are at War”: How Militias, Racists and Anti-Semites Found a Home in the Tea Party Maybe it’s the gun-making kits that are being raffled off as door prizes. Or maybe it’s the fact that nearly everyone inside this hall at the Ravalli County Fairground is packing heat. But most of all, it’s the copy of Mein Kampf sitting there on the book table, with its black-and-white swastika, sandwiched between a survivalist how-to book on food storage and a copy of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. It is obvious: This is not your ordinary Tea Party gathering. Mind you, they don’t explicitly call themselves Tea Partiers. Their official name is Celebrating Conservatism. But their mission statement is classic Tea Party — “to restore our country, counties, and cities back to the Republic and the Constitution of the United States” — and Celebrating Conservatism is listed as a member of the national Tea Party Patriots organization. Everyone in Hamilton, Montana — the whole of Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, for that matter — knows them as the Tea Party’s main presence in town. Once a month or so, the group holds a potluck dinner at the county fairgrounds that typically attracts a couple hundred people, which in a place like the Bitterroot is a sizeable presence. Of course, you should read the whole thing. To accompany your reading, you can view the above video, which I shot at the gathering as I covered it. A big shout-out to The Nation Institute’s Investigative Fund, which financed the project.

Pedal Powered Kitchen Center An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Back in the 60′s the Nutone Kitchen Center was all the rage in high-end kitchens; The idea was that you would have a pile of different appliances and one motor to serve them all, built into the kitchen counter. But in the end it didn’t make a lot of sense as electric motors were relatively cheap. But what if you do not want to use electricity? The mechanism is going to take up a lot more space and perhaps be more expensive. Designer Christoph Thetard has designed the R2B2 “to reduce private electric waste production.”… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The 47th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy was ignored by ABC's World News, and mentioned briefly on CBS Evening News. On the NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams used the occasion to promote the sales of yet another book of Kennedy family photos of the “Camelot” era. Williams just assumes that absolutely everyone is still aglow over the media's relentless promotion of a mythical family, with no apparent flaws or infidelities: For more than one American generation, November 22nd will always be the day President Kennedy was shot. A new book just out is full of the imagery of those years. It's called “Portrait of Camelot,” full of rarely seen family photos by the White House photographer back then, Cecil Stoughton. They include JFK’s Christmas Eve in Palm Beach, making sure the stockings were hung by the chimney with care . The incredibly cute John Jr. on a boat in August of ‘63. Jacqueline Kennedy on a boat off Cape Cod while Caroline naps on a summer day. read more

So the amoral Republican “patriots” are doing everything they can to block more unemployment extensions, and they’ll probably be successful. (All I can say is, I sometimes dream of guillotines.) But if you have anything left to spare, please consider a donation of food or money to your local food bank. They’re struggling everywhere. These folks are knocking themselves out to help against some stunning odds , and anything you can do in the name of our common humanity is a help: The economy may be showing signs of life, but food pantries and other nonprofit food-distribution agencies around the region say they are struggling to meet record-breaking demand as the holidays approach. In Loudoun County – the nation’s wealthiest county measured by median income – the food pantry is distributing its first-ever Thanksgiving meal, giving food to 2,000 families. In Montgomery County, the Manna Food Center added some Saturday hours for the convenience of working families. And in Fairfax County, the nonprofit Our Daily Bread is facing the grim reality that, although it will feed 2,400 people, it may not be able to help as many 650 needy families at Thanksgiving. Lynn Brantley, president and chief executive of the Capital Area Food Bank in Northeast Washington, said this year was the most difficult in the organization’s 30-year history. The food bank – the main supplier of food to more than 700 agencies and nonprofit groups around the Capital Beltway – will distribute a record-breaking 30 million pounds of food, up from 27 million last year. “With this economy, things are pretty bleak,” Brantley said. “People on Main Street are not rebounding.” Bread lines have become commonplace , including the 3,000 people who waited for groceries and personal-care items in Northeast last week at a giveaway co-sponsored by PepsiCo and the dozens who gathered in front of the Loudoun Interfaith Relief center Friday. Many are unemployed or underemployed, and their desperation is palpable. Joyce Crawford used to make a big Thanksgiving spread for her children and grandchildren every year, with turkey, ham, macaroni and cheese, and steaming bowls of collard greens. That was before – before she lost her job as a secretary, before she went on unemployment and then to a minimum-wage job raking leaves, before she had to give up her place to move in with her 37-year-old daughter. Now, she said, she doesn’t have anywhere of her own. But this Thanksgiving she is determined to cook as usual, even though she’s broke and has to squeeze into her daughter’s tiny apartment kitchen to do it. For Crawford, it all came down to a donated 12-pound Safeway brand turkey in a cardboard box. She might not have all the traditional trimmings, but she had that.

Acer reveals 4.8-inch Android smartphone with 1024×480 screen resolution

Acer may be calling this “100 percent smartphone. 100 percent tablet.,” but something just doesn’t add up there. That being said, we have to agree that a 1024×480 screen resolution on a 4.8-inch smartphone is downright drool-worthy. Clocking in at just a smidgen smaller than Dell’s Streak , this here phone (no finalized name has been bestowed quite yet) was just revealed at Acer’s Global press event in New York City . It was only shown briefly, demonstrating an unknown version of Android and the “evolution of Acer UI.” Specs wise, there’s a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 8 megapixel rear camera (with LED flash), 720p video recording, a six-axis gyroscope and LED edge lighting. Per usual, Acer’s keeping a lid on any pricing estimates, but it’ll be shipping out to gap-jawed customers everywhere in April 2011.
