Leo Ponies Up Big Bucks for Tigers

Having lived through a scary air travel incident last weekend, Leonardo DiCaprio is giving some big cats a shot at survival in the form of $1 million, which the actor donated Tuesday at the first-ever international tiger summit in Moscow.

Screen Grabs: BlackBerry Eyed PlayBooks (video)

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com . Whoulda thunk that the third time we’d see the BlackBerry PlayBook on video, it’d be in the hands of cube-headed dopplegangster Will.I.Shill? Not us, but we’re terribly excited to see the 7-inch tablet show off its augmented reality chops in the Black Eyed Peas’ latest music video. We’re not really sure what alternate reality hijinks turned the musicians into 8-bit portraits nor pixelated their world, but the BEP sure look adorable as Xbox LIVE-friendly avatars. Watch it after the break, or skip to 2:12, 3:16 and 3:54 if you just want to get your tablet on. [Thanks, Jamesy] Continue reading Screen Grabs: BlackBerry Eyed PlayBooks (video) Screen Grabs: BlackBerry Eyed PlayBooks (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 21:11:00 EDT. Tucker Carlson: Warren Buffet Can Pay More Taxes if He Wants to… But Leave my Trust Fund Alone!

Click here to view this media Greta Van Susteren wanted to discuss Warren Buffet’s recent interview where he said the rich should pay more in taxes. So of course who else better to discuss it with than Tucker Carlson. I don’t know if there’s anything much more nauseating than listening to a trust fund baby who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth like Tucker Carlson rant about how the rich shouldn’t have to pay their fair share in taxes.

UN Study: Forecast is Grim for Climate Change

Last year’s Copenhagen climate summit was a bit of a bust, so much is riding on next week’s global huddle in Mexico in terms of, you know, the future of our planet and other minor considerations. But a new study by UNEP, or the United Nations Environment Program, doesn’t offer much hope that even the combined force of those countries ready and willing to tackle climate change can stage a successful intervention in time to ward off disaster. Meanwhile, delegates will have a nice warm time in Cancun.

Painful budget set to be Cowen’s final act in office

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was clinging to power in Dublin on a temporary basis yesterday as Ireland adjusted to this week’s huge changes to its political and economic landscapes. The next phase in a fast-moving political scene will come with today’s publication of a government blueprint to cut Euro15bn (£12.7bn) over the next four years. The plan was yesterday finalised by the Irish cabinet. It is assumed to have the broad approval of the team from the EU, ECB and the IMF officials, which were drafted into Dublin last week in a financial rescue operation that deepened Ireland’s already long-running political crisis. It is also thought that the package will not be completely rejected…

AT&T-branded BlackBerry Bold 9780 spotted by way of eBay

T-Mobile’s got an American lock on the Bold 9780 at the moment, but you know how it goes with BlackBerrys: they tend to go pretty much everywhere ( Storm and Torch notably excepted) if you give ‘em enough time. Sure enough, an AT&T-branded version just popped up… and if you’ve got $899 lying around and an undying love for unreleased RIM gear, it can be yours. The phone’s chilling on eBay right now with a prominent AT&T logo silkscreened at the bottom; obviously, it stands to reason these guys would want to replace their Bold 9700 before too long, so we’re not surprised to see it go down like this. Want a white version, though? Well, you’ll just have to wait for that. AT&T-branded BlackBerry Bold 9780 spotted by way of eBay originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 20:37:00 EDT. Pity the Prez: NYT Blog Hauls Out the ‘Distraction’ Meme Again

I heard Rush mention this Caucus Blog item at the New York Times on his program today. It seems that the Times's Michael Shear is disappointed that Dear Leader is yet again caught up in a “distraction” (“Pat-Downs Ensnare White House in New Distraction”) It's headlined in the item's browser window as “Pat-Downs Ensnare White House in New Controversy.” Interesting edit, don't you think? If it's a “controversy,” the President owns it. If it's a “distraction,” well, it's an unfair intrusion. Clever. Shear wrapped it in a narrative whose theme was that “It all felt vaguely familiar.” Well, yeah. What's more than vaguely familiar has been the press's tendency to lament the distractions our supposedly otherwise focused like a laser beam chief executive must endure. On April 9, 2009 (at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ), I noted that “The words 'Obama' and 'distraction' have both appeared in 2,425 articles in just the past 30 days; excluding duplicates, it's about 450.” In his blog entry, Shear listed many other awful distractions the president has encountered. What's interesting are how many of them escalated because of Obama or people working directly for him: read more
