Greece: clashes at teen-shooting anniversary

DEREK GATOPOULOS Associated Press= ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Youths hurled rocks and petrol bombs at police Monday during clashes at a student rally marking two years since the fatal police shooting of a teenage boy that sparked Greece’s worst riots in decades. Sporadic clashes lasting more than two hours occurred in several parts of central Athens after 2,500 people marched to parliament to commemorate the death of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008. Protesting youths pelted police and a Finance Ministry building with rocks, oranges and flares, and smashed glass phone booths. Riot police fired tear gas and pepper spray as masked youths used smashed-up paving stones and ripped-up…

Android 2.3 update now rolling out to Nexus One owners (update: not yet)

Nexus One owners feeling a little Nexus S envy can breathe a little easier — we’re hearing that Android 2.3 Gingerbread is being pushed out to the N1 as we speak . We’d imagine that all the slick new features that don’t require new hardware (like NFC support ) will be there, and we’re definitely interested in playing with this built-in WiFi calling stack. We’ll let you know what we find — won’t you do the same? Update: Looks like our flood of tips came from people who were seeing their N1s get a different, less-interesting update. Google tells us that Gingerbread isn’t rolling out just yet, but is coming. Of course, we’ll let you know when the actual 2.3 update hits the OG Nexus. Ah, the heady optimism of hope. Anti-Environmentalists Don’t All Hate the Environment

Image credit: geerlingguy , used under Creative Commons license. I’ve asked before why so many people hate environmentalists . But, to be fair, the hate runs both ways. Android 2.3 SDK revealed, Gingerbread improvements called out

And finally, here it is! Android 2.3 — perhaps better known as Gingerbread — is now official, bringing a host of tweaks that should get the Android faithful pretty stoked. Most notably, the new build is being called out as significantly better for game development, tying in nicely with all these Sony Ericsson rumors we’ve been hearing as of late. Also on deck is tightly-integrated VoIP support, video calling support via a front camera, better cut-and-paste, NFC integration, gyroscope support for more accurate orientation data, an improved download manager, a redesigned keyboard with multitouch support, and an integrated task manager. Follow the break for the platform’s introductory video. Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows — at least on the Republican side of the aisle. They get a big wrapped gift for their donors, and we get what? Certainly nothing for the 99ers, who seem to have simply fallen off the White House radar . At least the Republican lords of the manor are giving us permission to extend benefits for some unemployed Americans : WASHINGTON — Top lawmakers predicted Sunday that a deal would be reached soon to renew the Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels and to extend unemployment benefits. “I’m optimistic we’ll be able to come together,” Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl of Arizona, one of his party’s negotiators with the White House, said he was open to discussing making jobless aid, a Democratic priority, part of a bipartisan compromise that would extend the 2001 and 2003 tax rates for all Americans for some period of time, a GOP goal. “I think that most folks believe that the recipe would include at least an extension of unemployment benefits for those who are unemployed and an extension of all of the tax rates for all Americans for some period of time,” Kyl said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” One day after Republicans blocked a Democratic effort in the Senate to extend the tax cuts for the middle class but not the very wealthy, it looked like a deal could be in the offing before the end of the week. The tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush expire at the end of the year unless Congress acts. “I think it’s pretty clear now taxes are not going up on anybody in the middle of this recession,” McConnell said. “We’re moving in that direction,” Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois, who appeared with Kyl on “Face the Nation,” said. But in a reference to extension of the tax rates for all income levels, he added, “We’re only moving there against my judgment. ” But in this morning’s Times, the Republicans are only saying they’ll “probably” allow us to continue unemployment benefits. Aren’t they just swell? As for the Democrats: In meetings with administration officials after the Senate votes, the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and many other House and Senate Democrats voiced deep unhappiness at the prospect of extending all the tax cuts and also expressed their belief that the White House did not appear to be getting enough for such a big concession , officials said. You’d think at some point the cognitive dissonance thing would make their heads explode. Here, the Democrats have been turning backflips to show they’re “just as concerned” about the deficits as the Republicans, and now the Republicans are pulling a major budgetbuster – at gunpoint. At some point, they might just figure out it’s easier to think for yourselves.

Google’s Nexus S product page goes live

This thing is all but official anyway, but for what it’s worth, Google’s now got its own product page live for the upcoming Nexus S from Samsung. Here’s the rundown: 4-inch WVGA display, triband HSPA with AWS support (no HSPA+, seemingly), 5 megapixel camera, NFC , 16GB of onboard storage, 512MB of RAM, available on T-Mobile. It’s also got a gyroscope — as do the existing Galaxy S phones — along with something being called the “contour display” (which matches up with rumors we’ve heard ), integrated VoIP support, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread . Interestingly, the phone’s quoted as having nothing more than a 1GHz Cortex A8-based Hummingbird processor, seemingly shooting down rumors that this thing would be rocking the Orion dual-core setup. Ah, well! Peep all the shots in the gallery below. [Thanks, Tony] Gallery: Google Nexus S Google’s Nexus S product page goes live originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 10:54:00 EDT.
