Rapists stalk women in Somali refugee camps

GALKAYO, Somalia – The three masked gunmen burst into Asha Muse Ali’s tent at night and grabbed every item of value they could find: $85 in cash, a cell phone and a gold ring. Then the attackers embarked on a crime that carries a severe social stigma in this conservative Muslim country: They raped Ali and her aunt. Ali and her family are among almost 60,000 internally displaced people in the central Somali town of Galkayo, where hundreds of families have sought refuge from violence in Mogadishu and in south-central Somalia. But once there, the women risk being raped. Aid workers say the number of rapes are alarming and that in some cases, they are fueled by young men watching pornographic…

China, 18 others to skip Nobel Peace prize party

BJOERN H. AMLAND Associated Press= OSLO, Norway (AP) — China and 18 other countries have declined to attend this year’s Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, Nobel officials said Tuesday as China unleashed a new barrage deriding the decision. Chinese officials in Beijing called Liu’s backers “clowns” in an anti-Chinese farce — comments that came only three days before the Dec. 10 Nobel peace prize ceremony in Oslo. Beijing considers Liu’s recognition an attack on China’s political and legal system, and says the country’s policies will not be swayed by outside forces in what it calls “flagrant interference in China’s sovereignty.” Liu, 54, is serving an…

God, I love Elizabeth Edwards. Like most of us here in the blogosphere, I adored her feistiness, her willingness to stand up to right-wing crap like Coulter’s from the beginning. It was always such a treat to read her online comments. And what a fundamentally decent woman, someone who always felt for other people and spoke about them in such a compelling way. (Maybe she’s the one who should have run for president.) I’m adding my own best wishes and prayers to those of the Edwards family as they accompany the talented and much-loved Elizabeth during the last weeks of her life’s journey. I’m so grateful to her for fighting our battles with us, and very glad she’s getting to have a good death at home, with the people she loves and who love her: (CNN) – Elizabeth Edwards is surrounded by family and friends in her North Carolina home after being informed by her doctors that further cancer treatment would be unproductive. “Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive,” the Edwards family said Monday in a statement. “She is resting at home with family and friends and has posted this message to friends on her Facebook page.” The message from Edwards, the wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, reads: You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know. Edwards was told by her doctors last week that additional cancer treatments were futile, said a source close to the family. Her prognosis was described in terms of weeks, not months, the source said. She is receiving treatment and medications, however, for symptoms and side effects. “She is not in pain, Elizabeth is in good spirits,” said the source. “She has prepared for this” John Edwards and their children are at her side, along with Elizabeth’s brother and sister.

Powerful and Deadly Hurricanes, As Seen From Outer Space (Slideshow)

Photo credit: NASA Goddard For coastal regions around the world, the threat of hurricanes —strong storms fueled by warm air and water—is a seasonal reality. Each year, storm cells form over the ocean and begin moving towards land, sometimes growing into massive tropical cyclones—like Hurricane Gordon, seen here—capable of causing damage with heavy rain,

Visa clears DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay mobile payment microSD card for use in smartphones

No iPhone? No problem. If you’ll recall, we heard back in May that Visa was in cahoots with DeviceFidelity , with the two trumpeting a not-exactly-svelte In2Pay case that would add contactless payment support to Apple’s darling. Today, the rest of the world is finally being taken into consideration. The aforementioned firms have just cleared a new In2Pay microSD solution for use in the real world, with the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Samsung Vibrant in particular named as compatible. In theory, it seems that nearly any smartphone with a microSD slot could be ushered into the arena, and Visa itself expects to add additional phone models for use with this technology, “including phones based on the Symbian and Windows operating systems.” This unveiling is happening after a solid 18 months of testing around the globe, but there’s no definitive word on which banks will be offering this to customers. Between this and the sudden interest in NFC , America seems more poised than ever before to slip ever further into an endless pool of debt, and with way less friction than before! We kid, we kid… kind of.
