Bing’s detailed mall directory maps improve Paul Blart’s livelihood, should be on mobile

Mall maps integrated into an online mapping system? It’s not exactly a minty fresh concept, but Microsoft has managed to seriously up the game with its Bingified mall directory maps. These zoomable, highly detailed maps help you see the layout and store count at a glance, with each click inside of a store yielding an exact address, phone number and links to ‘Directions’ / ‘Send to Mobile.’ Heck, you can even use ‘em to discover the best place to park. Only problem? They aren’t exactly mobile friendly just yet, which all but defeats the purpose. Except, of course, if you’ve got the photographic memory that every stressed-out college student in existence longs for. Hit the source link to see if your nearby shopping complex is one of the 22 listed — if not, you can only pray that it’s added prior to December 24th. Unscrupulous Coal Baron Wanted for Immediate Hire

Image: Screenshot, Craigslist You may have heard that the infamous CEO of Massey Energy, Don Blankenship — who presided over the company during the worst mining accident in decades and racked up a list of safety violations so long it would impress BP — is going into retirement. BlackBerry PlayBook app submission is a go, free tablet offer detailed

Adobe Air veteran: print out that code, fold it neatly into a secure envelope, affix two (or more) stamps, address it to Research in Motion, drop it in the nearest outgoing, and rejoice! The Haus of BlackBerry’s now accepting app submissions for the upcoming Will.I.Approved PlayBook tablet — and just as promised , it’s giving free PlayBooks to developers who get their work accepted and ready for the App World store before the tablet launches in North America. Limit is one per registered dev no matter how many many times you submit or how simple / complex the app is, so long as RIM gives it the thumbs up. Interested in the grand prize of full acquisition? Sorry, that seat’s been taken . BlackBerry PlayBook app submission is a go, free tablet offer detailed originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 16:29:00 EDT. Quote Of The Day: "I’m Wearing Pink For All The Pinkos Out There Riding Bicycles" (UPDATED)

Image credit BlogTO Don Cherry has a penchant for fancy suits and is a commentator on the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s biggest show, Hockey Night In Canada. For some reason Toronto’s new mayor thought it appropriate that Cherry should place the chain of office around his neck, even though Cherry a) doesn’t live in Toronto, and b) is a millionaire who says “people are sick of elites and artsy people running the show.” and thinks Ford likes “lunch pail blue collar people”. But to top it all off, in To… Read the full story on TreeHugger

There are many areas where the establishment press's terminology preferences are significantly out of sync with everyday usage by the general public. To name just two examples, the ever so PC press routinely replaces publicly favored and more informative terms such as “illegal immigrants” and “Muslim terrorists” with “undocumented workers” and “militants.” And of course, we can't forget the press's affection for “a certain late-term pregnancy-ending procedure,” when it's really “partial-birth abortion.” Though the disconnect I'm about to describe isn't as serious as the ones just noted, there is another area where press terminology is at wide variance with the public's preferences. That would be in how to describe the shopping season that occurs from Thanksgiving until the end of the year. For a while, the press's terminology choices seemed to be winning over retailers. But at least this year, that isn't so, as noted in an item at Advertising Age (HT to Tim Graham at NewsBusters, who tweeted on this about 10 days ago): read more

Terror strikes Varanasi: 1 dead, 35 hurt in blast at ghat

VARANASI: A 10-month seeming lull after the Pune German Bakery blast was shattered on Tuesday when terror returned with a low-grade explosion at the evening Ganga Aarti in Varanasi that left a one-year-old girl, Swastika Sharma, dead and 35 injured, including four foreigners. The crude device went off at 6.40pm at the old Dasaswamedh Ghat just as the aarti had begun. Mercifully the crowd was thin for the popular aarti on Tuesday as the city was already under red alert because of the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary a day earlier. The Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blast in an email sent from close to Link Road in…

Samsung’s SCH-LC11 CDMA / LTE mobile hotspot gets FCC approval, probably Verizon bound

We’ve heard rumors that Novatel is working on an LTE -enabled version of its MiFi for Verizon, likely for launch early next year — but you’ve got to figure that a few other manufacturers would like a slice of that sweet, juicy 4G pie, right? We just noticed this so-called SCH-LC11 from Samsung has garnered FCC approval, offering CDMA / EV-DO compatibility alongside 700MHz LTE stuffed into some sort of WiFi-enabled mobile router, which would be perfect for Big Red’s new network… but then again, it’d also be perfect for MetroPCS’ LTE airwaves. MetroPCS has yet to launch any data-centric LTE products, but it’s got a good relationship with Samsung — its only LTE device right now is the Samsung Craft , in fact — so we could definitely imagine the little guys trying to beat Verizon to the punch with a sexy, pocketable 4G hotspot to do battle with Sprint’s Overdrive . One way or another, this is hitting an American carrier… and the sooner, the better. If my count is right, a coalition of House members aligned with the Tea Party and Progressive caucuses could cause any bill sent to the House from the Senate to fail. Michele Bachmann came out with a statement yesterday afternoon signalling probable opposition to any deal that ties unemployment extensions to tax cut extensions. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), the chairwoman of the House Tea Party Caucus, said Republicans could balk at voting to extend all the tax cuts for two years if it’s tied to a long-term extension of jobless benefits. “I don’t know that Republicans would necessarily go along with that vote. That would be a very hard vote to take,” Bachmann said on conservative talker Sean Hannity’s radio show on Monday. Assuming Bachmann has the ability to hold the caucus together, that’s 52 House members . The progressive caucus has 83 members . If both joined in opposition, that would leave any bill sent from the Senate short 8 votes in the House. That conclusion assumes such a bill ever leaves the Senate, of course. It’s possible it won’t, depending on how much power Jim DeMint wields. If DeMint, Inhofe, Barasso, Coburn, Bunning, Voinovich, Sanders and Feingold can put together 41 opposing votes between the ultra conservatives and the ultra progressives, it could get stuck there, as well. Ah, we live in interesting times. Those tax cuts may still expire December 31st, and if they do it will be because a coalition of natural enemies joined against a compromise coming from the center. This debate has been a test of everyone’s resolve. There are still lots of plays left before the clock runs out. Stay tuned.
