Daddy doesn’t have to take the T-Bird away, he can just take all the fun out of driving it. That is, if the T-Bird is actually a Taurus. Ford’s MyKey system has been engendering teen resentment since the release of the 2010 Focus, allowing parents to limit max speeds and cap radio volume, but parental control doesn’t stop there — the 2011 MyKey can selectively block radio stations. Starting next year, parents will have the option to block 16 Sirius radio channels from the car’s dial, among them Howard Stern, Playboy, and Hip-Hop Nation. Optional radio censorship isn’t the only new feature for MyKey, which allows owners to program a key to fit their specific level of paranoia — the new version allows parents to set top speeds between 65 and 80mph, instead of the previous fixed cap of 80mph. Other controls carrying over from the original system include a chime that sounds at 10mph intervals, starting at 45mph, and an advanced notice when fuel levels are low. The new features will come standard issue on the 2011 Ford Taurus and Ford Explorer, and will eventually reach across both the Ford and Lincoln brands. Thursday’s New York Times headline on Pakistani disappearances and U.S. disapproval is just a bit too much to take. Difficult to believe that the Times could publish it with a straight face. “Disappeared with reported ties to Pakistan worries U.S.” WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is expressing alarm over reports that thousands of political separatists and captured Taliban insurgents have disappeared into the hands of Pakistan’s police and security forces, and that some may have been tortured or killed. According to the Times, many of those who have vanished have nothing to do with the Taliban, but are Baluchis, a restive people in Pakistan long intent on forming an independent state. Equally alarming, the Pakistani authorities are refusing to admit any knowledge about most of the cases. The matter has become so grave that the U.S. military is now actually refusing to train Pakistani military units that have been involved in torturing and killing detainees.

After a couple of long, cautionary front-page stories documenting the Supreme Court’s “ sharp jolt to the right ,” New York Times legal reporter Adam Liptak on Tuesday took a shorter, mostly sympathetic look at the empathy and “humanity” shown by Obama’s liberal pick, Justice Sonia Sotomayor in “ Sotomayor Guides Courts’ Liberal Wing .” Liptak’s overall report was pretty balanced in its labeling, but also contained this paragraph summarizing one of Sotomayor’s “most telling” opinions, on the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the case of a Louisiana prisoner claiming unjust punishment.
