Analog sunset begins, all the new Blu-ray players will only output HD via HDMI

The chicken littles have been worried about this since long before the first Blu-ray (or even HD DVD ) title was ever released, and the first step towards the analog sunset has officially come. Any new Blu-ray player announced after January 1st 2011 will only output HD via HDMI — players that started shipping last year can still be sold until the end of this year though. If you just love component video , you might figure you’ll be able to get a player today and continue to enjoy it for years to come, but maybe not. You see the studios also have the Image Constraint Token (ICT) which when set on a title will tell every and all Blu-ray players to down convert analog output to 540p. The only reprieve is that if its set on a title, it must be marked on the box, and of course it can’t be retroactively set (any title you own now will continue to play exactly the same way it does on your existing players). We’re waiting for final confirmation, but apparently the ICT hasn’t been an option to studios until now so start looking for the icon on your latest purchases. The final stage in the sunset is 2013 when analog outputs will be removed from Blu-ray players completely, but we suspect we’ll have better things to worry about by then like ultra HD or digital distribution. Barbara Walters: ‘Unfair’ to Blame Sarah Palin

You may recall that Sarah Palin placed cross hairs on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ district and tweeted “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!” about 10 months before someone shot the congresswoman and 19 others. Well, Barbara Walters says “to blame Sarah Palin as some are doing, I think it’s very unfair to her.” Related Entries January 10, 2011 Heed the Prophetic Words of Whoopi Goldberg January 10, 2011 The Arizona Shooting, as Seen From Europe

Ah, Florida! Too many houses, too many foreclosures, too many people unemployed, very little fresh water left. Maybe it’s not such a good idea to elect a right-wing businessman who defrauded Medicare, will privatize everything he can get his hands on, degrade what’s left of the environment and let developers have their way with anything they want! TALLAHASSEE — In a move with the potential to unravel decades of growth management and environmental policy, Gov. Rick Scott has named two agency heads who have strong ties to the state’s development industry. Scott, who has promised to rid the state of “job-killing” regulations, named Billy Buzzett, a land-use lawyer who has worked for one of the largest developers in Florida, to lead the state Department of Community Affairs, the state’s top agency for regulating developers. Scott has also indicated his support for diminishing the role of the DCA by merging its responsibilities with those of several other agencies, including the Department of Transportation. At the Department of Environmental Protection, which is involved in issues including restoration of the Everglades and oil drilling, Scott tapped Herschel Vinyard, a lawyer and executive with a Jacksonville ship-building company. Vinyard has previously represented businesses in environmental cases. The appointments, which drew praise from some business groups like the Florida Chamber of Commerce, are an indication that the new administration may be ready to significantly scale back growth-management and environmental regulations, such as laws requiring developers to pay for new roads or requiring major developments to go through a regional-impact review. Growth-control advocate Dan Lobeck calls Buzzett’s pick to lead DCA a “radical” choice, arguing that a developer should not be in charge of development regulations. “If there ever was a case of the fox guarding the henhouse, this is it,” Lobeck said. “This is a full-scale abandonment of growth management in Florida.”
