January 12, 2011 No CommentThe folks at USA Today really ought to vet their candidates for the “Et Cetera — Smart insights on the news of the day” section of the print edition of its editorial page a bit more thoroughly. Wednesday morning's opener in that section (apparently not available online) featured two paragraphs from a New York Times op-ed by former Pennsylvania Congressman Paul Kanjorski, including this final sentence: Therefore, it is incumbent on all Americans to create an atmosphere of civility and respect in which political discourse can flow freely, without fear of violent confrontation. Yes, in addition to being one of the coolest and largest nations in the world, China now has the distinction, at least for the time being, of having the longest bridge in the world. The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge in Shandong Province is almost three miles longer than the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana, which was the previous record holder. The bridge took four years to build — lightning fast by American construction standards — and cost around $8.5 billion dollars. It was designed by Shandong Gausu Group and built by about 10,000 workers. Hillary Rodham Clinton was quick to rebuke Israel for its demolition of part of the historic Shepherd Hotel in occupied Arab East Jerusalem where Jewish colonists are hoping to build 20 housing units. “We are very concerned about the initiation of demolition of the Shepherd’s Hotel,” the Secretary of State declared in Abu Dhabi. She did not mince any words in her outright condemnation: “This disturbing development undermines peace efforts to achieve the two state-solution. In particular, this move contradicts the logic of a reasonable and necessary agreement between the parties on the status of [occupied] Jerusalem.” Regrettably, Clinton stopped short of using her whip….
