CES 2011 saw the debut of what could be the biggest challenge to the Wintel dominance of personal computing since Windows 95 cemented its position. The combination of the Android operating system on ARM processors — ARMdroid if you will — grabbed most of the attention in the emerging tablet category on products such as devices such as the Motorola Xoom and LG G-Slate . But it was also clear that manufacturers — unconstrained by Cupertinian notions of what operating system is best suited to what kind of device — are willing to take the combination in new directions that come much closer to the notebook form factor. A clear example of this was the ASUS Eee Pad Slider . If having the tablet thunder stolen from Microsoft wasn’t enough to make the company uncomfortable, clearly encroaching designs like this were. And so, at Steve Ballmer’s keynote, the company announced that the next version of Windows will support not only x86 offerings from Intel and AMD – themselves moving closer to ARM-like system-on-chips – but ARM designs from companies such as Qualcomm and NVIDIA as well . Microsoft noted that the new chip support was requested by its partners, implying that PC companies want to take advantage of the long battery life and thin form factors enabled by ARM architectures, but also bring along Windows’ broad driver and software support. Microsoft clearly considers the tablet another PC, albeit one that Windows’ hardware and user interface layer needs to support better. However, in striking back at Android evolution, Microsoft risks collateral damage to its own mobile OS. Can Windows Phone 7 co-exist with a ARM-based version of the real thing? Greg Gutfeld on Saturday went after “hacks with an axe to grind” whose “rush to judgment” concerning last Saturday's shootings in Tucsocn “revealed the media's not so secret biases towards certain political personalities and movements.” Offering his opinion at the end of “Fox News Watch,” the “Red Eye” host specifically named Jane Fonda, Paul Krugman, and “the creeps at Daily Kos” (video follows with transcript and commentary): JON SCOTT: Before all of the victims in last week’s shootings in Tucson could be taken from the scene, some in the mainstream media had already made charges of guilt. “Red Eye’s” Greg Gutfeld sums it up for us. GREG GUTFELD: So a lot’s been said regarding the ghastly events that took place last Saturday, but I'm going to focus on the media whose opinions seem in stark contrast from the facts, and it’s the facts that matter, not the thoughts of hacks with an axe to grind. For it was their rush to judgment that revealed the media's not so secret biases towards certain political personalities and movements among lefty columnists, celebs and talking heads. Their responses barely concealed a morbid glee in getting their assumptions met using harsh rhetoric that they themselves pretend to condemn. They pumped out manufactured outrage all to control the narrative. And who showed up? Jane Fonda, Paul Krugman, the creeps at Daily Kos and Media Matters, and even Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy who wanted to spit on the Tea Party but now blames the right for the shootings. And then there’s the Democrat that wants to ban symbols. I believe that’s symptom one in the diagnosis “You’re stupid.” And so the amnesiacs galloped to one conclusion, forgetting that doing the same thing with the Fort Hood shooter would be seen as bigotry. Really, I want to go after these ghouls gorging on tragedy, but as someone famous once said, “Wrestling with a skunk only leaves you smelly and the skunk happy.” There were a lot of skunks out there last weekend and they all stunk. For “Fox News Watch,” I’m Greg Gutfeld. I certainly wouldn’t want to give my business to this bank: PHILADELPHIA – An elderly New Jersey woman billed $5,800 after missing the final payment on her 30-year mortgage can pursue her lawsuit against the debt collectors. Lawyers for 85-year-old Dorothy Rhue Allen say the fees charged by two banks and a law firm violate consumer-protection laws. The suit says LaSalle Bank and Cenlar Federal Savings Bank started foreclosure proceedings in 2007 after the hospitalized Allen missed the last $432 payment on her Deptford, N.J., home. The banks advised her lawyers she could pay $5,800 to avoid foreclosure. But her lawyers instead sued over the fees, and the foreclosure action was dropped. A U.S. appeals court this week says Allen can pursue her case, reversing a federal judge who threw it out.

Fox News Watch panelists on Saturday named some villains concerning last week's tragedy in Tucson. Aside from the shooter himself, Newsweek's Jonathan Alter, New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, and Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos were mentioned for their terrible coverage of this awful event (video follows with transcript and commentary): JON SCOTT, HOST: The media is always looking for heroes and sometimes villains in a case like this. Who made the list? LYNN SWEET, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Well, number one the only one on my list of villains is the shooter, and his motivations are still being looked into. SCOTT: And he deserves to be there. Bill? BILL MCGOWAN: I would also say the shooter, but I’d also say that Paul Krugman in introducing to the media bloodstream the idea that this was political before any facts were known was a disservice to the broader understanding of the story. Even though he's an opinion columnist, he should not have been putting that out there that quickly. SCOTT: Judy? JUDITH MILLER, FOX NEWS: And in that same category, Markos Moulitsas at the Daily Kos, who announced immediately without any facts at all, “Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin.” JIM PINKERTON, FOX NEWS: And I would add Jonathan Alter of Newsweek who wrote a very crude column advising President Obama on how to take maximum political advantage out of that speech that he gave in Tucson. All columnists like to give advice, but this is a little too much based on blood and tragedy. SCOTT: But there are lots of columnists who, you know, speculated on what the President should say, the nation needed healing, that kind of thing.
