A former Swiss banker is set to hand over even more financial data to. Rudolf Elmer, a former Julius Baer employee, claims he has data on how the mega-rich have used offshore accounts and institutional loopholes to avoid tax payments. Elmer is set to go on trial for breach of privacy in his home country of Switzerland on Wednesday. —JCL Reuters: A former Swiss private banker who was one of the first whistleblowers to use WikiLeaks by publishing internal bank documents on the site has pledged to hand over new data on offshore bank account holders on Monday, a newspaper said. Rudolf Elmer, who was fired from Julius Baer in 2002 and who goes on trial in Switzerland on Wednesday for breaching bank secrecy, will hand over more data to WikiLeaks at a news conference in London, Der Sonntag reported on Sunday. Elmer told the Swiss paper he would hand over two compact discs containing the names and account details of around 2,000 bank clients—including prominent business people, artists and around 40 politicians—who have parked their money offshore. The ally of ousted president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali claims he was “pained” at the fall of the president, and that protesters were manipulated by cables written by “ambassadors in order to create chaos”. —JCL The Guardian: The Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, has condemned the uprising in neighbouring Tunisia amid reports today of unrest on the streets ofLibya. In a speech last night Gaddafi, an ally of the ousted president, Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, said he was “pained” by the fall of the Tunisian government. He claimed protesters had been led astray by WikiLeaks disclosures detailing the corruption in Ben Ali’s family and his repressive regime. The leaked cables were written by “ambassadors in order to create chaos”, Deutsche Press-Agentur reported Gaddafi as saying. Iran has invited the world – sans the U.S. – to come and tour several of its nuclear sites. Diplomats from other countries did visit the sites in what Iran says was an effort of goodwill and transparency. Chian, Russia, and the European Union refused the invitation. —JCL The BBC: A group of foreign diplomats is touring some of Iran’s nuclear sites, as Tehran seeks to build support for its controversial nuclear programme. Iran said it was a gesture of goodwill and transparency, but the US was not invited – while China, Russia and the EU refused the invitation. Tehran said its uranium enrichment programme was progressing “strongly”. It was responding to US claims that the programme was being hit by international sanctions. 17 Afghan civilians have been killed in only a 24-hour span, as homemade bomb devices likely intended for U.S. soldiers and Afghan police detonated against civilians in a day fraught with explosions. —JCL The LA Times: Roadside bombs killed at least 17 Afghan civilians in a 24-hour span, including nine people — a child among them — whose vehicle was torn apart by a powerful blast on Sunday as they were on their way to a wedding in northern Afghanistan. Civilians are dying in record numbers as the war in Afghanistan grinds into its 10th year, and crude but powerful homemade bombs are the greatest hazard facing them. Insurgents plant the devices with the aim of killing Western troops, but more often it is noncombatants who are left dead or maimed. The wedding guests, all members of the same extended family, were killed when their station wagon hit a bomb outside Pul-e-Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province, north of Kabul, provincial authorities said. Baghlan, along with a wide swath of northern territory, has become far more dangerous over the last year as the Taliban insurgency pushes outward from its traditional strongholds in the south and east.
