Hundreds of thousands of protesters have turned out across Egypt to demand that Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, step down. The protests in Cairo centred on Tahrir Square, where multitudes gathered in a largely peaceful demonstration. Protests were also held in the cities of Alexandria, Mahalla and Giza. The humble unlock screen gets ever fancier, and Nokia Bubbles is one of the fanciest we’ve seen yet. Like a variety of aftermarket lock screens it enables you to control your media player or initiate calls before you even unlock your handset, but does so in an interesting way. You just grab the bubble for what you want and drop it on what you want to do. A simple unlock entails dragging the key onto the lock, and if you have a missed call you can grab that person’s bubble and drag it to a phone to call them right back. Grab the music bubble to go straight to the music player and, well, you get the picture. Okay, so it’s not quite as much fun as playing Puzzle Bobble , but it is ever so slightly more useful. Scientific American has a report on Hawaii’s use of sea urchins as a way to combat invasive seaweed in their coral reefs. By breeding sea urchins to boost numbers, they can act like goats on hillsides, keeping the weeds mowed. “To combat the smothering seaweed, scientists from Anuenue Fisheries Research Center have now started breeding native collector urchins (Tripneustes gratilla), which can eat the invaders without damaging the local coral.” The idea was tested out in 2009 and is now being rolled out.
