CIA office in Afghanistan attacked

US citizen and attacker killed after gunfire and blast heard at hotel used as base for office in Kabul A US citizen was killed in an attack on a hotel in Kabul used as a CIA office on Sunday. The attack was carried out by an Afghan employee who was also killed. Officials are still investigating what happened in an area with restricted access even for Afghan security forces. The Ariana hotel is just a few blocks away from the presidential palace and the US embassy, in a heavily guarded military and diplomatic enclave almost entirely inaccessible to casual visitors. Gunfire and a small blast were heard by Reuters witnesses a few hundred metres away late on Sunday. Kabul police chief, Ayub Salangi, said there had been an incident at the Ariana hotel, which he described as an “office” for the US government’s Central Intelligence Agency. He had no further information. Afghan security forces have only limited access to the area. The CIA and the US embassy in Kabul declined to comment. But a US official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation, confirmed an attack had been made against a US facility in Kabul. Access to the hotel has been restricted at least since the fall of the Taliban government in late 2001. Perhaps because of its proximity to the presidential palace, it was used by ruling regimes for years before that. Two weeks ago, militants launched an assault against the US embassy and Nato headquarters in Kabul. Top US officials including Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, blamed those attacks on the Haqqani network, a group of Afghan militants based in Pakistan’s tribal areas, and said they were supported by Pakistan’s spy agency. Pakistani officials strongly denied any ISI connection to the Haqqani network or the previous attacks on Kabul. Afghanistan United States CIA guardian.co.uk

European debt crisis: Live

Stock markets fell again this morning as Europe’s policymakers scrabble to come up with a rescue plan to hold the eurozone together 8.45am: We’ve also seen a startling plunge in the price of gold and silver this morning. The spot price of gold tumbled to as low as $1,534 per ounce this morning, a fall of over $100 per ounce. Back on 6 September, it was trading above the $1,900 mark. Silver was even more badly hit – slumping from $31.04 per ounce to just $26.04 per ounce. That’s a 16% drop in value, in just a few hour’s trading. There are three reasons for today’s sharp falls • The US dollar has strengthened overnight, which typically pushes down the price of assets priced in dollars. Despite America’s own debt issues, investors can’t break the habit of treating the greenback as the Safe Haven par excellence • There’s also a general ‘dash for cash’, as firms sell their precious metal assets raise funds to cover losses elsewhere • The upfront cost of trading in both metals has just risen, with CME Group raising the cash deposit it demands from traders who buy gold and silver futures . That should deter speculators, and may encourage them to quit the gold market. 8.20am: You might think that the prospect of a €2trn warchest to save the Eurozone would spark a rally in shares, rather than another early selloff. The reason, it appears, is that many in the City aren’t convinced that the plan can be put together, having witnessed months of bickering and indecision among Europe’s leaders. Michael Hewson, market analyst at CMC Markets, was encouraged that EU leaders are preparing to enlarge their current bailout fund, along with talk of recapitalising Europe’s banks and guiding Greece into an “orderly default”. However, he warns that the plan will probably need to be approved by every eurozone member – which is the reason that the “Save Greece” agreement hammered out on 21 July still hasn’t been approved. Hewson is also disappointed by the latest pronouncements from the leaders closest to the situation: Markets are likely to remain sceptical while EU officials continue to utter contradictory statements — with ECB member and Bank of France governor Christian Noyer stating that there was no need for a recapitalisation of French banks. German chancellor Angela Merkel also added to the uncertainty with mixed messages on German TV last night as she continued to walk a fine line with the German voters, saying that a euro area insolvency cannot be ruled out, and at the same time saying that Greece cannot be allowed to default. 8.15am: Far Eastern markets markets have also suffered today. Some markets are still trading, but right now every one is down on the day — this round-up of the Asian markets is splattered with red electronic ink. Japan’s Nikkei has closed at its lowest level since April 2009. It tumbled by 186 points, or 2.17%, to 8,374.13. The worst performer is the Jakarta Composite index, which is down 5.5% today in late trading. Indonesia’s exports trade is dependent on natural resources – a global slowdown will erode demand for products such as oil, gas and coal. 8.05am: European stock markets have just opened – with another bout of heavy selling. The FTSE 100 index fell by 92 points, sending the blue-chip index slumping back through the 5,000 point mark to 4974 points. Mining companies are the biggest fallers in the City, driven by those fears of a global slowdown and the recent falls in commodity prices. There are similar falls in other European markets – the French CAC fell 2% at the open, with Germany’s DAX down 1.3%. That looks like a pretty vigorous thumbs-down to the Washington DC talks, and the failure to develop a solid plan to end the turmoil. 7.45am: Six weeks to solve the crisis. That was George Osborne’s stark warning last Friday , after world stock markets had been battered by fears that the world is heading for a new recession. Three days later, and the clock is ticking. Last night, high-level talks in Washington DC between top finance ministers and International Monetary Fund officials broke up without any clear signs of a deal. There is talk of creating a €2tn warchest to rescue Europe’s struggling countries, but no clear idea how this will happen. Financial markets will give their verdict on the Washington talks today – the early reaction from Asia has not been favourable, with most markets falling sharply. Investors in London are predicting more losses here too – but trading is likely to be volatile. We’ll bring you all the key developments in the European debt crisis today. Let us know what you think too, below the line… European debt crisis Euro Banking Stock markets Europe IMF Ed Balls George Osborne Market turmoil Graeme Wearden guardian.co.uk

How To Avoid Marital Boredom

One little mentioned reason for a dying marriage is boredom. It’s usually unlikely that one partner is wholly responsible. But it is easier to blame someone else and find excitement on the other side of the fence. It used to be that boredom was expected, although no one said so — at least not openly. But it was generally conceded that married life was inevitably routine. Going to work everyday and coming home happily to the same woman was what a man was expected to do, while his memories of nights out with the boys grew brighter, more passionate and more unreal. Having a baby was thrilling, but after the first few months it was a lot of work, less sleep and no play. Her majesty the baby took over the household. Moms were too tired for sex, and fathers had a diminishing role. Jokes about the sexual frustration of post-baby husbands are common. “Men get frisky while women have babies” was the folk saying in New England, along with the belief that sex after the honeymoon is on a downward path. In many divorces in my study there had been no sex for more than 5 years, or at least not in the marriage. And how many times can you go happily to the same neighborhood restaurants or how many fancy new dishes can the exemplary wife concoct? Plus do you really have to visit grandma every Friday night or play bridge or bowl every Tuesday with the same couples? Of course what some folks consider boring, others crave. One happy husband, a bored stockbroker, could not wait to get home nightly. Sitting quietly in the kitchen at the end of each day, watching his wife cook or joining her by tasting some new dish and listening to her light, witty chatter about their friends and neighbors made his day worthwhile. He adored her for the pleasure she provided, and for the oasis she had created to protect him from the grim marketplace. There are many ways to lighten the routines of family life. But they take imagination — try some. Some successful couples had dinner out weekly with no talk of the children allowed. Their children soon got the hang of it, and joined in dressing Mom for her heavy date — laughingly promising to “wait up.” Other couples took long weekends away. The rich rented a fancy hotel suite. Those on strapped budgets went camping. Some couples always took three short vacations a year: one with the kids, one together, and one separately. Others took up new interests ranging from yoga to art to a new language to kayaking. A good marriage is not a hothouse. It has windows open for new vistas, for continued renewal, including meeting new people, visiting exotic places, and finding new interests. Keep your eyes open, hold on to your sense of humor, and avoid the terrible drag that you’ve “been there and done that”. You may soon be astonished at how good your marriage feels. For fuller description about how to maintain interest in your marriage see my detailed description of 50 successful marriages in Judith Wallerstein & Sandra Blakeslee. UN Security Council to consider Palestinian bid

The UN Security Council begins consultations Monday on Palestine’s application for full membership of the world body, although a vote on the historic bid isn’t expected for weeks. The United States has already threatened to veto the move, insisting that only direct Palestinian-Israeli talks can set up a Palestinian state. US President Barack Obama says the UN bid is an unrealistic shortcut that will not produce real and lasting peace on the ground between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The mediating foursome of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia has been urgently trying to get both sides back to the negotiating table. On Friday,…

NYT: Netflix strikes deal with Dreamworks, will begin streaming movies, TV specials in 2013

It looks like those rumors of a streaming deal between Netflix and Dreamworks Animation were as good as advertised. Details are still fuzzy at this point, but the New York Times is reporting that the two parties have reached an agreement to stream Dreamworks’ movies and TV projects, as part of a deal worth an estimated $30 million. Under the contract, which replaces a similar pay TV pact between Dreamworks and HBO, Netflix will begin offering exclusive access to the studio’s new films in 2013, with Antz , Kung Fu Panda and other titles from its library slated to become available for streaming sometime thereafter. The company won’t be confined to selling digital copies of Dreamworks’ movies within a specific period, either, drawing a major distinction between itself and HBO, which requires studio partners to halt digital sales outside of an exclusive window. HBO probably isn’t too thrilled to see Netflix strike what Dreamworks chief exec Jeffrey Katzenberg called a “game-changing deal,” but it also has a new partnership of its own with Summit Studios, which it brought on board after letting Dreamworks out of its contract a full two years early. We’re still waiting for official confirmation of Netflix’s latest deal, but we’ll let you know as soon as we get it.
