What will be the most talked-about feature of this new device? First, let’s stipulate that most of the hardware specifications of the iPad 2 are known, more or less, thanks to endless blogger speculation: one or two cameras, a faster processor, twice the RAM, some tinkering with battery, screen, thickness and bezel. In other words, in the big scheme of things, nothing too exciting. Do you know many people who have held off buying the iPad because it lacks a camera, dual-core CPU or 512 megs of RAM? No, me neither. ( Read Price is Right more… ) Price is right, Canucks weren’t After giving the Canadiens an early lead, Vancouver pressed to comeback but fell just short. Tom Cruise was in the house Tuesday night and suddenly beating the Montreal Canadiens became as difficult as it was back in the 1970s for the Vancouver Canucks. In other words, Mission Impossible. The Canadiens scored two goals 69 seconds apart early in the first period, got stellar goaltending from B.C. native Carey Price and snapped an eightgame losing skid in Vancouver as they hung on for a 3-2 win over the Canucks. AFTER only four meetings of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee, and well before most industry groups could finishing dusting off their talking points from the 2009 fear campaign against the ill-fated Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, Labor, the Greens and key independents yesterday announced their agreement on the “broad architecture” for an Australian carbon pricing mechanism. Australia looks set, finally, to establish that most elusive of prizes in Australian climate politics: a carbon price. AMD and NVIDIA are set to clash horns on this field of battle once again, fishing for mindshare as much as they are for high premium sales, with the Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590, respectively. The former has already slipped out of the shadows of mystery to reveal a size slightly longer than an A4 sheet of paper, while the latter is being rumored for an unveiling at the PAX East 2011 gamer gathering. Expected GTX 590 specs include 1024 total CUDA cores, 3GB of onboard RAM with dual 384-bit memory controllers, and three DVI outputs for some single-card 3D Vision Surround gaming. This year’s PAX East is kicking off on March 11th and AMD is also looking very close to launching its part, so you should need no more than a couple of weeks’ worth of patience before everything about the latest and greatest from both camps is known. Bank of America, the biggest U.S. lender, counted 288,000 employees in its annual report for 2010 to securities regulators, an increase of 4,000, or 1.4 percent. Wells Fargo, the biggest U.S. mortgage lender, increased headcount by 4,900, or 1.8 percent, to 272,200, according to its annual report. Bank of America’s workforce increased 17 percent in 2009, the year when Merrill Lynch & Co. was added, while San Francisco-based Wells Fargo dropped almost 5 percent that year. Penalties faced by the nations largest banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are expected to run into billions of dollars as a result of the banks automatically signing foreclosure documents without reviewing them carefully. The result of the steep fines is that the banks will put an end to “no money down” type mortgage programs, and begin requiring larger down payments to qualify for mortgages. During 1997 through 2006, mortgage lenders created a variety of no money down type programs and “loan to own” mortgages which eliminated the strict requirements previously needed to get a mortgage. Individuals did not have to prove their ability to repay the mortgage or have sizeable downpayments during this period, and lenders like Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup lent millions of mortgages to people they knew had little chance of fully repaying them. Countrywide was at the epicenter in faulty underwriting compared to its peers,” said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher Mutascio. According to the group, the index increased to 71.2 to start the year. This has far exceeded expectations, as economists were anticipating a decrease from 68.8 to 67.5 for the month. Also helping to boost stocks has been the increase in personal spending in the United States. January’s spending levels increased by 0.2%, slightly off from what economists had predicted. Washington cut ties with running back Clinton Portis and Chicago released defensive tackle Tommie Harris. I haven’t had a chance to check the mailbag yet, but I’m sure there already are some questions about if either player might be a fit in the NFC South. Let’s start with the usual labor clarifications. Portis and Harris would be available to sign as free agents immediately since they were released and didn’t become free agents by playing out their contracts. But the window of opportunity could be very limited. If a labor lockout starts Saturday, as many expect, Portis and Harris would join the other 500 or so potential free agents in a situation where all signings would be frozen until there is a new labor agreement. It’s been announced that, unsurprisingly, the Redskins plan to release RB Clinton Portis because he’s overpaid ($8 million next season) and often injured (he’s only played in 13 games over the past two seasons). As well as “Dolla Bill” and “Sheriff Gonna Getcha.” Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins on Monday, ending a charismatic and sometimes contentious seven-year stay that, for a while at least, made him the face of the franchise. Injuries and money led to coach Mike Shanahan’s decision. Portis had played in only 13 games over the last two seasons because of a severe concussion in 2009 and a torn groin muscle in 2010. Last week Portis told WJFK radio: If it’s time to move on, I’ll do that. I’m appreciative of everything they’ve done for me. I had a good time and enjoyed myself.” As usual, Portis had a few pointed things to say, including some that were a bit cryptic. “One of the biggest reasons for why my time is up in D.C.: the drama and the issues, the back and forth with teammates,” he told Mike Wise. Portis added that he’s given everything he’s had to the city of Washington and there is “nothing left for me to prove.” Portis also admitted that things were never the same for him after the death of teammate Sean Taylor, a fellow University of Miami alum and Portis’ closest friend. Time to Take the Wonderlic Test At the NFL Scouting Combines, the athletes are finally able to see the physical results of their hard work in the weight room. The long hours in the gym, eating food prepared by their nutritionist, all of the sacrifices that they had to make to impress the NFL scouts and general managers in attendance. The one part of their body that probably received the smallest amount of preparation time was their brain. That is where the Wonderlic exam comes in to play. It’s in the classroom and it’s the intimidating ‘Wonderlic’ Test, which supposedly goes a long way towards measuring a player’s “Football IQ.” The history of the test includes some very interesting scores, both at the high and low end. A few years ago, former University of Texas and Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young reportedly scored a ’6′ on the test. At the same time, Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick scored a ’50′ and Washington Redskins QB Donovan McNabb got a ’14′ on his test. (forward to the 18 minute mark of the video to spare yourself needless migraine material) LA Times: House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told a convention of religious broadcasters in Nashville on Sunday evening that a federal government shutdown was not appropriate and not what the electorate wanted. His remarks were the latest sign that congressional leaders were backing away from the brink of a shutdown. “Americans want the government to stay open, and they want it to spend less money,” Boehner said. “We don’t need to shut down the government to accomplish that. We just need to do what the American people are asking of us.” He cited “the moral responsibility” to reduce the federal deficit and cut government largesse while keeping the government open, but he said Congress also had a responsibility to address Social Security and Medicare spending. Clearly these statements will anger his Tea Party base. Are we not people? If words can titillate you, then any mention of not raising the debt limit or holding it hostage to destroy Social Security and Medicare/CAID clearly creates massive orgasms within the Tea Party movement and the FOX Business Network. The fact that Boehner said the American people do not want a federal government shutdown undermines the Bachmann/Palin/Limbaugh/Beck/FOX line of attack and immediately causes unwanted impotence for these hyped-up individuals. I wonder how long it will take him to retract his words or say he was misquoted …
