Japan: Huge Radiation Spike at Nuke Was Mistake

Emergency workers struggling to pump contaminated water from Japan’s stricken nuclear complex fled from one of the troubled reactors after reporting a huge increase in radioactivity, a spike that officials later said was inaccurate. (March 27)

This was a truly horrifying thing to watch , and even more upsetting to wonder what’s happening to this woman now as a result of telling foreign journalists of her ordeal. And of course, there’s always the possibility that this is an attempt to draw the United States deeper into war in Libya: It was just another breakfast time at Tripoli’s smart Rixos Al Nasr hotel, sleepy foreign journalists helping themselves to cereals, rolls and terrible coffee in the restaurant, looking out over a neat garden unusual in the dour capital city. But the Groundhog Day conversations – more overnight coalition air strikes against Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, rebel advances in the east, how to escape the minders – were suddenly interrupted when a distraught woman burst in to describe how she had been repeatedly raped by government militiamen. Iman al-Obeidi was quickly manhandled and arrested by security officials – an extraordinary spectacle for the journalists staying in the luxurious hotel-cum-media centre, hemmed in by severe restrictions on their movements and fed barely credible information. The scene – filmed by several of those present – unfolded when Obeidi entered the Ocaliptus dining room and lifted up her abaya (dress) to show a slash and bruises on her right leg. “Look what Gaddafi’s men have done to me,” she screamed. “Look what they did, they violated my honour.” Distraught and weeping, she was surrounded by reporters and cameramen. Libyan minders pushed and lashed out at the journalists, one of them drawing a gun, another smashing a CNN camera. Two waitresses grabbed knives and threatened Obeidi, calling her “a traitor to Gaddafi”. Obeidi said she had been arrested at a checkpoint in the capital because she is from Benghazi, stronghold of the anti-Gaddafi rebellion in the east. “They swore at me and they filmed me. I was alone. There was whisky. I was tied up. They peed on me.” She said she had been raped by 15 men and held for two days. Charles Clover of the Financial Times, who tried to protect her, was pushed, thrown to the floor and kicked, and Channel 4 correspondent Jonathan Miller was punched. Obeidi was frogmarched, struggling, into the lobby and driven away, shouting: “They say they are taking me to hospital but they are taking me to jail.” Minders again tried to stop journalists taking pictures. It was impossible to verify her account. Musa Ibrahim, a government spokesman, said he had been told Obeidi, apparently in her 30s, was drunk and suffered from “mental problems”. The incident made a powerful impression on journalists who have heard of, and occasionally seen, brutality but are subject to stringent controls to prevent them reporting independently and have a frustrating sense of being manipulated for crude propaganda purposes by the authorities. “There was a desperate sense of our failure to prevent the thugs taking her away,” C4′s Miller said afterwards. “There was nothing more that we could have done as we were overtly threatened by considerable physical force.” An American TV cameraman said: “I think she probably was raped, otherwise I can’t see her having the courage to put herself at such risk to let us know what the regime is doing. We see the fear in people all the time. But this is the most blatant example of the vicious way the regime treats the Libyan people.”

Howard Kurtz Hypocritically Supports Huffington Post Canning Breitbart

Howard Kurtz on Sunday supported the Huffington Post's decision to can Andrew Breitbart as one of its front page contributors. The “Reliable Sources” host took issue with comments Breitbart made about former Obama green czar Van Jones, but ignored the immutable fact that numerous HuffPo bloggers have regularly made ad hominem attacks on prominent conservatives without being admonished or demoted (video follows with transcript and commentary): HOWARD KURTZ: When “The Huffington Post” started putting conservative provocateur Andrew Breitbart on its front page, I thought, well, now that Arianna has taken her operation to AOL, she's going to start featuring at least a few conservatives. Still, her old acquaintance, Breitbart, was responsible for that misleading Shirley Sherrod video and for giving a platform to James O'Keefe and those undercover ACORN videos in which he played a pimp. But “The Huffington Post” has now bounced Breitbart right off the front page. This, after the liberal group Color of Change called him a liar and a race-baiter. Breitbart didn't exactly turn the other cheek. He told the conservative “Daily Caller” Web site that a founder of Color of Change, former Obama aide Van Jones, is “a cop killer-supporting, racist, demagogic freak. And a commie. And an eco-fraudster.” “The Huffington Post” said that Breitbart's remarks violate the tenants of debate and civil discourse. You think? I'm all for people speaking their mind, but if you want to hang out in nicer neighborhoods, you can't shout quite as loud. Okay, but shouldn't that apply to all of HuffPo's front page contributors? How about the regularly featured Bill Maher who has consistently been guilty of ad hominem attacks on folks like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin, and Michele Bachmann? Other good examples of HuffPo contributors clearly in violation of the “tenants of debate and civil discourse” are Mike Malloy, Sean Penn, Bill Press, and Ed Schultz. If Huffposters are no longer allowed to make ad hominem attacks even at other venues, shouldn't these “provocateurs” be given their walking papers as well? And how about HuffPo reporter Jason Linkins who as the Right Sphere noted Thursday is regularly tweeting ad hominems? Shouldn't he be fired from his position effective immediately? As for Kurtz, shouldn't he have asked such questions in his commentary about this matter and pointed out the hypocrisy in this decision by HuffPo rather than just supporting his friend Arianna? Since the answer is clearly “Yes,” it's preposterous for Howie to call this segment “Media Monitor” for that's clearly not what he did with this issue Sunday.

Verizon’s Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot launches March 31st

Though it won’t be the first Verizon LTE device to share its white-hot connection over WiFi (that honor goes to the recently-launched Thunderbolt ), Samsung’s SCH-LC11 — announced back at CES — is shaping up to be the network’s first dedicated hotspot to hit retail. We’ve just been dropped the carrier’s internal equipment guide showing a launch date in all channels (stores, telesales, and online) this coming Thursday, March 31st; pricing is an open question, but carriers tend to price these modems pretty aggressively on contract since they know they’re going to eat you alive with the data plan for the next two years. Of course, in this case, we’re more than willing to get eaten alive if it means we’ve got a 20Mbps WiFi connection in our pocket at all times. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Verizon’s Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot launches March 31st originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 13:33:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds .
