A total of 110 people in 80 cars and three trucks involved in crash on motorway near Baltic Sea after sandstorm A sandstorm in northern Germany has caused a huge motorway pile-up that killed eight people and injured at least 41 others, police said. Rostock police spokesman Volker Werner said rescue operations were still under way and the death toll could rise. At least 41 people were injured, many of them seriously, and were taken to nearby hospitals. Others who suffered shocks or bruising received treatment on the spot, Werner said. Some 110 people in 80 cars and three trucks were involved in the crash a few miles from the Baltic Sea on Friday, Werner said. At least 17 vehicles caught fire, including a truck carrying flammable material. “Unfortunately, it looks like the death toll could rise further,” Werner said. Several bodies were thought to be in the burnt vehicles. “One truck has crashed on a car, so we don’t know yet how many people are in the car below it,” he said. The crash in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state was caused by a sandstorm, but it was unclear if this was down to a sudden lack of visibility or sand on the road, Werner said. Strong winds may have carried the sand from nearby fields – one of them freshly ploughed – to the four-lane highway, Werner said. This afternoon, CNN brought on Planned Parenthood’s Judy Tabar to discuss his comment. During the interview, CNN anchor Don Lemon relayed a statement from Kyl’s office walking back the comment, claiming the statement was not meant to be “factual”: LEMON: We did call his office trying to ask what he was talking about there. And I just want to give it you verbatim here. Some iPhone 4 users are reporting that their Apple smartphones appear to be taking pictures of them without their knowledge, then displaying these mysteriously snapped photos during FaceTime calls. Users have taken to an Apple support forum to complain of the issue. According to their posts, they have seen photos taken with the iPhone 4′s front facing camera–but which they themselves did not take–freeze on the phone’s screen during FaceTime calls. “My boyfriend and I have both recently experienced this problem several times – when one of us is calling the other via FaceTime, an old picture freezes on our screen, while the person receiving the call only sees a black screen,” wrote kar0786. “It’s kind of creepy, because it brought up photos of both of us at work, where I have used FaceTime a few times but he never has. We’re just wondering how/why this is happening, and if there is a fix. It’s not terribly inconvenient, but it’s definitely unsettling, where is seems that even if we haven’t taken a picture or used FaceTime, the camera is keeping images.” Another wrote, “I have a dashboard mount for my phone. I had left the phone in the car when I ran in to get my sandwich. This was at a strip mall that I had never visited before and never connected to any WiFi. I parked in the middle of the lot, about 75ft from the doors to Subway. Ran it, got my food, hopped back in the car. I hit the button to see if anyone called me (no one did) and drove off. After I got in to where I was working and ate my sandwich, I tried to use FaceTime and saw a frozen image of me in the car from 20-30 minutes prior!” What might be causing the alleged issue has not been determined, though Apple support reportedly told one user, nasetron, to restore the factory settings on the iPhone 4 in order to resolve the problem (nasetron notes the problem “didn’t go away after that, so they actually had me return it to an Apple store and swap it out for a new one.”). Some people have skeletons in their closet. I have an enormous Barbie in mine. She stands about six feet tall with a 39″ bust, 18″ waist, and 33″ hips. These are the supposed measurements of Barbie if she were a real person. I built her as a part of the first National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) at my high school, later introducing her to Hamilton College during its first NEDAW in 2011. When I was a little girl, I played with my Barbie in her playhouse, sending her and Ken on dates that always ended with a goodnight kiss. I had fond times with my Barbie, and I admired her perfect blonde locks and slim figure. Barbie represented beauty, perfection and the ideal for young girls around the world. At least, as a seven-year-old, that is what she was to me. In January 2007, I was looking for a way to make my peers realize the importance of eating disorders and body image issues. I was frustrated after quitting the cheerleading squad, frustrated with pressures to look and act a certain way and most of all frustrated with the eating disorder controlling my life. I wanted to do something that would turn others’ apathy into action. That evening, my neighbor and I found two long pieces of wood and started measuring. With a little math, nails and hammering, we built a stick figure that stood about six feet tall. The chicken wire came next. Surrounding her wooden frame, we created a body that wasn’t much thicker than a stick figure, but had the womanly and unattainable curves and proportions that impressionable young girls idealize. We stuffed the chicken wire with newspaper and created a body that creepily leaned against the wall in my neighbor’s basement. She now needed some skin, so I brought her back to my apartment and employed the masterful art of papier maché. Taking stacks of newspaper, glue and water, I skipped my high school semi-formal dance to give my girl some skin. Oddly, I started to feel my fondness for Barbie return, now not as a plaything but as a tool to reveal the negative body image that she promotes. As I papier machéd, I couldn’t forget Barbie’s impressive bust and blew up balloons over and over again to achieve a perfect 39″ measurement. Once her chest was secured, I spent hours dipping and smoothing the paper, and later mixed paints to replicate her seemingly perfect white skin tone. With a little hard work and a lot of time, a headless, footless and handless body soon stood in my apartment. But it was then I became stumped. I couldn’t figure out how to recreate the recognizable face of the Barbie we all know and love. With NEDAW just around the corner, I was panicked. On my way to get office supplies, I drove by a Toys ‘R’ Us, and that’s when it hit me. Remember that Barbie with just shoulders and a head, meant for you to practice brushing her hair? I confidently walked into the toy store for the first time since I was a kid. I found the Barbie head, found a friend to assemble that head, and clothed Barbie for her first debut. I dressed Barbie in my old clothes. The skirt she still has on today is a reminder of who I once was. That skirt, a size double zero, used to slip off my waist when I was struggling with anorexia. I put it on Barbie to serve as a reminder that the way Barbie looks, the way I once looked, is not healthy and is not “normal,” whatever normal might mean. My Barbie’s role is simple. She grabs the attention of apathetic onlookers and makes them think and talk about an issue that thrives in silence. In the last four years, Barbie has surpassed my expectations, attracting attention and sparking conversation among listeners and readers across the nation. Once a year, at the end of February, Barbie comes out of the closet to meet my friends, strangers, and those apathetic onlookers. During NEDAW, she reminds people that eating disorders and body image issues are serious and prevalent. Holding an awareness week in high school or college is just one way to get students to discuss these important issues. However, constant discussion and education is key to dealing with and overcoming eating disorders. Despite her bizarre appearance, Barbie provides something that many advocacy efforts lack. She reminds of something we once loved, while showing us the absurdity of our obsession with perfection. More “Get Real, Barbie” statistics:* • There are two Barbie dolls sold every second in the world. • The target market for Barbie doll sales is young girls ages 3-12 years of age. • A girl usually has her first Barbie by age 3, and collects a total of seven dolls during her childhood. • Over a billion dollars worth of Barbie dolls and accessories were sold in 1993, making this doll big business and one of the top 10 toys sold. • If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5’9″ tall, have a 39″ bust, an 18″ waist, 33″ hips and a size 3 shoe. • Barbie calls this a “full figure” and likes her weight at 110 lbs. • At 5’9″ tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia. As the network TV barons peruse through a menu of pilots for new fall shows, some just jump out of the pile. Some Tinseltown pundits have already pegged it as “likely” that NBC will pick up a show for fall called “The Playboy Club.” Just like it sounds, the show is based in Hugh Hefner’s original Playboy Club in Chicago in swinging 1963. If that doesn’t sound porn-friendly enough, the pilot’s producers at 20th Century Fox TV required all actors on the show to sign a nudity clause – virtually unheard of in broadcast television. “Nudity” in this contract is defined as well, nudity. But that’s not what grabs attention. This is: “Nudity as defined above and/or simulated sex acts may be required in connection with player's services in the pilot and/or series,” the clause reads, according to Variety. Actors may now be required to be naked on NBC. Despite this new low, Variety was told there was no nudity in the pilot, and producers didn’t plan any such thing for NBC. But apparently, the broadcast version would provide temptation for the titillated to buy the DVD for the “extras.” (And if there will be no nudity, why a nudity clause?) Variety guessed that the “Playboy” show could travel in the opposite direction from edgy HBO fare like “The Sopranos” and “Sex and the City.” A “clean” version would air on NBC, and then a sleazier version might appear in pay cable – or perhaps on an edgy basic-cable channel like FX. The Parents Television Council condemned NBC for its blatant attempt to obliterate broadcast decency standards with this show. When Comcast bought NBC Universal, the PTC asked the Federal Communications Commission to press Comcast to stipulate it would not use the public airwaves to “distribute pornographic material.” As PTC president Tim Winter now states, “The ink isn’t even dry yet on the company merger and we’re already saying ‘We told you so.’” Could the nudity clause be but a moralist-teasing ploy to use scandal to boost the program’s chances for a fall pickup? Sleaze doesn’t always sell. This pornographer-glamorizing show wouldn’t be a first for Fox Television. Nearly everyone’s already forgotten “Skin,” which Jerry Bruckheimer made for Fox in 2003. The premise was a teen Romeo-and-Juliet romance between the son of a District Attorney and the daughter of a porn magnate. Critics adored it. Frank Rich of The New York Times raved, “Bruckheimer didn't get where he is by being ahead of the curve. He is the curve. His gut tells him, accurately, that porn is not just well within the American mainstream but overdue to be stripped of its plain brown wrapper in prime time.” But does this sound familiar? Bruckheimer expressed his intention to have the DVD release contain more explicit edits of the episodes than what was broadcast on Fox. Sometimes, these business ploys don’t pay off. Unfortunately for Bruckheimer and his media boosters like Rich, Fox only aired six episodes before it all ended with a ratings-crashing yawn. So much for “Bruckheimer isn’t ahead of the curve. He is the curve.” Even if NBC picked up the show and steered clear of a nudity clause, the show could give a boost to Hugh Hefner’s flagging porn empire. Stock analysts have seen quarterly loss after quarterly loss for Playboy, and Hefner bought back his shares at an inflated price to avoid a takeover by other pornographers. One thing is making money for Playboy: licensing its brand. If NBC picks up this show, the resulting glamour could provide a real, well, “stimulus” for the Playboy brand. The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas opened a Playboy Club in 2006, and a new Playboy Club opened this month in the hot spot of Macao on China’s southern coast. How times have changed. In 2011, “The Playboy Club” defines what the “progressives” in Hollywood will glamorize. But back in 1985, ABC made a TV-movie called “A Bunny’s Tale” to dramatize uber-feminist Gloria Steinem’s 1963 expose of the Playboy clubs as a thankless job for the overworked, under-dressed help. Where are Steinem and her brigade of feminists to protest NBC and Fox for their Hefner-boosting plans in 2011? This is just another example marking how lame and discredited the feminist movement looks today.

The Motorola Xoom might be starting to look a bit pricey compared to some of its new competitors , but it seems that the company may have a solution in the offing. According to a leaked, supposedly authentic Verizon screenshot obtained by Droid Life , Motorola is apparently planning to launch an LTE-upgradable Xoom with just 16GB of storage instead of the current 32GB, which would presumably also open the door for a cheaper 16GB WiFi-only model. Of course, that’s still a long way from being official, but cutting the storage in half is certainly one sure way to make a (seemingly necessary) price drop a bit more bearable. Sad, to say the least. #Tahrir 12.25pm: Relatives of victims of the Lockerbie bombing have asked their lawyers to request a meeting with Moussa Koussa, the former Libyan foreign minister who has defected to Britain. Koussa is believed to have been an intelligence officer when PanAm flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie in 1988, leaving 270 people dead. The Press Association reports that Dr Jim Swire, whose 23-year-old daughter Flora died in the attack, confirmed that the legal team representing the victims’ families had been instructed to approach officials with a view to setting up a meeting with Koussa (left). He warned that anything Koussa said would have to be taken with “a huge pinch of salt”, however. Koussa was head of Muammar Gaddafi’s intelligence agency from 1994 and a senior intelligence agent when PanAm flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet was en route from London to New York when it exploded over the Scottish town, killing 243 passengers, 16 crew and 11 residents. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was jailed for mass murder in 2001 but the Libyan was returned to Tripoli in 2009 on compassionate grounds after doctors treating him for prostate cancer gave him an estimated three months to live. Dr Swire added: “The underlying problem is that many of us are not satisfied with the verdict that Megrahi was guilty as charged.” “Koussa was at the centre of the regime in 1988, so if anyone knows the role Libya had to play in it, he would. It’s important for us to get any information that we can. “But anything he would say would have to be taken with a huge pinch of salt because of his current predicament.” The request from the victims’ families comes after Scottish police and prosecutors met Koussa on Thursday as part of their investigation into the bombing. As Palestinian missiles landed in Israel, AP reported: In all, 18 Gazans have been killed and more than 65 wounded since Israel unleashed the strikes following a Hamas attack on an Israeli school bus Thursday.
