An independent inquiry must be held into the recent killings of Syrian protesters by security forces, rights activists say. US-based Human Rights Watch led the call for an inquiry after 94 people were reported killed since Friday….

Last year, 24/7 Wall St. analyzed the environmental issues facing each state. In observance of Earth Day, the rankings were updated to reflect the most recent data. 24/7 Wall St. examined energy consumption, pollution problems and state energy policies. The most recent information, issued in 2009 and 2010, was used for all states. Thousands of data points were collected to determine the most and least “green” states. Below are the ten least green states in the 24/7 Wall St. ranking, based on environmental problems and how effectively these problems are addressed. CLICK HERE to see the 10 greenest states.

Among the dead were a 70-year-old man and two boys ages 7 and 10, Amnesty International said. In the southern town of Izraa, a man ran carrying the body of a young boy, whose hair was matted with blood from a gaping wound on his head, as another child wept and shouted, “My brother!” Footage of the scene was posted on the protest movement’s main Facebook pace. In other towns, protesters scattered for cover from sniper bullets, then dragged corpses through the streets. Mobile phone images showed the bodies lined up on the floor inside buildings. The rallies, most marching out from mosques after Friday’s noon Muslim prayers, erupted in towns and cities stretching along the breadth of the country, including in at least two suburbs of the capital, Damascus. The death toll was likely to rise, raising fears that there will be an explosion of violence Saturday as relatives bury their dead in funerals that in the past have turned into new protests. Ammar Qurabi, head of Syria’s National Organization for Human Rights, said another 20 people were missing. Friday’s toll was double that of the previous deadliest day of the uprising, on April 8, when 37 were killed around the country. The heavier crackdown came after Assad warned a week ago that any further unrest would be considered “sabotage” after he made the gesture of lifting long-hated emergency laws, a step he ratified on Thursday. It was a clear sign that regime was prepared to escalate an already bloody response, with nearly 300 already dead in more than five weeks. Previously, Assad has mixed the crackdown with gestures of reform in a failed attempt to deflate the protests. The bloodshed so far has only served to invigorate protesters whose demands have snowballed from modest reforms to the downfall of the 40-year Assad family dynasty. Each Friday, growing numbers of people in multiple cities have taken to the streets despite the near certainty that they would come under swift attack from security forces and shadowy pro-government gunmen known as “shabiha.” “Bullets started flying over our heads like heavy rain,” said one witness in Izraa, where police opened fire on protesters marching in front of the mayor’s office. The town is located in southern Daraa province where the uprising kicked off in mid-March. In Washington, President Barack Obama condemned the latest use of force by Syria against anti-government demonstrators and said the regime’s “outrageous” use of violence against the protesters must “end now.” In a statement, Obama said Syria’s moves to repeal a decades-old emergency law and allow peaceful demonstrations were not serious in light of Friday’s events. He called on Assad to change course and obey the will of his people by giving them what they seek – freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly and the ability to choose their leaders. Tens of thousands marched Friday in the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Hajar Aswad, the central cities of Hama and Homs, Latakia and Banias on the coast, the northern cities of Raqqa and Idlib, the northeastern Kurdish region, and in Daraa, witnesses said. It was certainly one of the most robust gatherings to date, but it was difficult to gauge whether turnout was larger than heavy demonstrations a week ago. Because the protests were so quickly and violently dispersed Friday, it appeared that many gatherings were broken up before the masses hit the streets. Amnesty International put the day’s death toll at 75, mirroring reports from witnesses to The Associated Press. Friday’s witness accounts could not be independently confirmed because Syria has expelled journalists and restricted access to trouble spots. Witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. As it has stepped up its response, Assad’s regime has seemed little affected by mounting international concern over the violence. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. calls on the Syrian government “to cease and desist from the use of violence against peaceful protesters” and to “follow through on its promises and take action toward the kind of concrete reform that they’ve promised.” In the U.K., Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the “unacceptable killing of demonstrators by the Syrian security forces.” “I call on the Syrian security forces to exercise restraint instead of repression, and on the Syrian authorities to respect the Syrian people’s right to peaceful protest,” Hague said. The protest movement has been the gravest challenge against the autocratic regime led by Assad, who inherited power from his father 11 years ago in one of the most rigidly controlled countries in the Middle East. The uprising in Syria takes its inspiration from the popular revolts that toppled the leaders in Egypt and Tunisia. But Syria is a highly unpredictable country, in part because of its sizable minority population, the loyalty of the country’s military and the regime’s web of allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran. Serious, prolonged unrest in Syria would almost inevitably hurt Hezbollah and weaken Iran’s influence in the region. But it is not at all clear what would come next if a power vacuum emerges in Syria. The country has multiple sectarian divisions, largely kept in check under Assad’s heavy hand and his regime’s secular ideology. Most significantly, the majority of the population is Sunni Muslim, but Assad and the ruling elite belong to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism. Assad has exploited fears of sectarian warfare – so apparent in neighboring Iraq and Lebanon – by blaming the unrest on a “foreign conspiracy” and armed thugs trying to sow sectarian strife. On Friday, the state-run news agency SANA said masked gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on the guards of a government office in Izraa, killing eight bystanders. SANA also said two members of the security forces were killed “by armed criminal groups,” one in the Muadamiya district of Damascus, the other in the Baba Amr district of Homs. There was no way to independently confirm the account. U.N. Secretary-General condemned the violence and called for it “to stop immediately,” U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said. The U.N. chief reiterated his call for “an independent, transparent and effective investigation into the killings” and reminded Syrian authorities of their obligation to respect international human rights including the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and freedom of the press, Nesirky said. Besides the government crackdown, Assad has been trying to defuse the protests by offering a series of concessions, granting citizenship to thousands among Syria’s long-ostracized Kurdish minority, firing local officials, releasing detainees and forming a new government. The recent lifting of emergency laws – which gave authorities almost boundless powers of surveillance and arrest – had been a top demand. But many protesters said the concessions have come too late – and that Assad does not even deserve the credit, because the protest movement is forcing his hand. The true strength of the protest movement is still murky because the uprising is so loosely organized. To be sure, the protests have expanded in numbers and to more parts of the country. But there are no organized, credible opposition leaders who can rally followers on the ground or be considered as a possible successor. No political parties other than the Baath Party are allowed in Syria, and almost all opposition figures have been either jailed or exiled. Still, many young activists are not deterred by the uncertain future. “This is no reason to stick with this alternative for life,” said one activist in Banias, asking that his name not be used for fear of reprisals. “Syria has many qualified people who were never given a chance.” ___ Kennedy reported from Cairo. Rees, one of the country’s most senior scientists, criticised those who pit science against religion and urged atheists to embrace the moderate strands of faith in opposing fundamentalism. The Cambridge cosmologist declared what he described as his “pallid and boring” view in an article in the New Statesman that amounts to a defence of his decision to accept a £1m prize given annually by the Templeton Foundation for work of a spiritual nature. The announcement that Rees had accepted drew criticism from some scientists who claim the prize undermines the integrity of science. Rees said some modern proponents of Darwinism took a “glaringly different stance to the Victorian naturalist who once commented that religion was too profound for the human intellect to comprehend. “We should all oppose – as Darwin did – views manifestly in conflict with the evidence, such as creationism … But we shouldn’t set up this debate as ‘religion v science’; instead we should strive for peaceful coexistence with at least the less dogmatic strands of mainstream religions, which number many excellent scientists among their adherents.” Rees, who is master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was among the first generation of scientists to contemplate the big bang. In subsequent work he has asked how large is physical reality. In the article, Rees, who does not believe in God , described himself as an “accommodationist” and “tribal Christian” who was happy to attend church services. “Campaigning against religion can be socially counter-productive. If teachers take the uncompromising line that God and Darwinism are irreconcilable, many young people raised in a faith-based culture will stick with their religion and be lost to science. Moreover, we need all the allies we can muster against fundamentalism – a palpable, perhaps growing concern,” he wrote. Martin Rees Atheism Creationism Christianity Religion Ian Sample guardian.co.uk

They say nothing like this has ever happened before, but it looks like we’re going to have to get used to these unusually strong and frequent extreme weather events. It’s the new normal! Via Raw Story: Crews worked on Saturday to get St. Louis’ tornado-battered airport ready to reopen after it was hit by a roaring storm that also damaged hundreds of houses, tossed cars and knocked out power. Several injuries were reported but no fatalities. A preliminary count showed at least 750 homes were damaged, Governor Jay Nixon told reporters after touring the area by air. Fewer than 100 homes were completely destroyed, he said. Near a highway overpass about 10 miles from downtown St. Louis trees had been snapped like toothpicks, metal was twisted in piles, broken glass covered the ground. Among the wrecked building’s was 58-year-old chiropractor Dennis Baker’s office, which lost its roof in the storm. “The wind had whipped around inside with such force that it just tore everything apart,” Baker told Reuters, mopping his brow as he took a break from clearing debris. “We found the roof sitting in our parking lot and we just started in trying to get the important stuff out,” Baker said, saying he and his wife worked from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. using the light from a small flashlight. Governor Nixon declared a state of emergency and released state funds to help in the cleanup. He also spoke to President Barack Obama, who pledged his full support and assistance with recovery efforts, according to a statement from the governor’s office.

The $3.5 million Cantonese-language production “3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy” had earned 17 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.2 million) as of Tuesday since opening last week on 73 screens, according to figures provided by producer Stephen Shiu. That’s nearly seven times the total take so far for Hollywood thriller “Scream 4,” which has earned HK$2.5 million ($320,000). “Sex and Zen” – a remake of a 1991 Hong Kong movie by the same name – features full nudity and camouflaged lovemaking scenes but does not show actual sexual intercourse, as is common in pornographic films. The movie, which stars Japanese porn stars Hara Saori and Suo Yukiko and Hong Kong actress Vonnie Liu, tells the story of a sexually frustrated scholar in ancient China who loses himself in the harem of a duke he befriends. The film brought in HK$2.78 million ($360,000) on its opening day last Thursday, eclipsing the previous first-day record set by James Cameron’s 2009 3-D sci-fi epic “Avatar,” which earned HK$2.63 million ($340,000) on its first day. In Taiwan, where the movie opened Friday on 77 screens, it earned 17 million New Taiwan Dollars ($590,000) through Sunday. That figure is still inferior to Hollywood competition but marks the best opening weekend for a Chinese-language movie in Taiwan this year, Shiu said Wednesday. Shiu, whose father Stephen Shiu Sr. served as executive producer on the original “Sex and Zen,” said he believes he has capitalized on a huge desire for 3-D erotic movies. “We met people’s expectations. People have always thought that you need 3-D technology for this kind of content. So people were very curious,” he said. “Sex and Zen” bills itself as the world’s first 3-D erotic film, although Shiu acknowledges that a South Korean production – last year’s “Natali” – hit the market before his release did. However, Shiu’s movie is still a pioneering attempt at using new 3-D technology in theatrical releases of erotic films, given that the market in the West is now largely dominated by DVD releases. The movie’s Hong Kong performance has also been boosted by an influx of mainland Chinese viewers, whom Shiu estimates accounted for up to half of the business at some theaters. Although former British colony Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997, it still maintains a separate political system – and film regulatory regime. While Hong Kong has a film ratings system, mainland China doesn’t, which effectively rules out erotic content. “Sex and Zen” received a restricted rating in Hong Kong, allowing only audiences aged 18 and older to see the film. It’s not the first time mainland viewers have traveled to Hong Kong to evade censorship by Chinese authorities. Many mainlanders crossed over to watch the uncut version of Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s sexually explicit 2007 spy thriller “Lust, Caution.” Hong Kong theater operators have also sought to cash in on the novelty factor by staging women-only screenings. “Sex and Zen” has also been released in about a dozen theaters in Chinese communities in the Australian cities Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but Shiu didn’t have box office results. The movie is scheduled to be released in South Korea on May 12, and in France, Italy and India in June. Shiu is also targeting a May release for Singapore, although the filmmakers are still working with local censors on the final cut.

It’s my fault.” So hysterically said retired Minneapolis anchorman Don Shelby during a speech at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, Tuesday: After spending 32 years in front of the camera as an anchorman and investigative reporter for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, Don Shelby wanted to apologize to people about climate change. Shelby was speaking at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday on what he called “The most important story since journalism began — global climate change.” His speech served as the kick-off for a two-day sustainability fair sponsored by UMD’s Office of Sustainability. The TV newsman’s mea culpa about having misreported climate change came after of years of treating the story the same as he would any other, requiring the views of two opposing parties, Shelby told the packed lecture hall of the chemistry building. But, he said, climate change is not a pro or con issue; it’s a scientific fact. And journalists who work to “balance” a story present an inaccurate picture when they give equal weight to sources promulgating inaccurate facts. “If I report a story on abuse of children, I don’t go out and interview an abuser on the up-side of child abuse,” he said as an example of how an effort to balance can go too far. Yes, global temperatures rising by about one degree Celsius in the past 160 years as we came out of a solar minimum, radically increased the population, and replaced grasslands and forests with cities, skyscrapers, concrete and asphalt is akin to abusing a child. There's therefore only one side to the story as to why the planet got hotter, and reporting the other far more logical one is like letting a child-abuser explain why beating kids is okay. This is what passes as critical thinking in journalism today. And this man was speaking to a group of college students filling their minds with the same lack of objectivity. Scarier still, for 32 years Shelby reported to the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul on television and radio. Makes you wonder what other biases the Emmy Award-winning “newsman” has been sharing all those years if he's willing to stand up in front of an audience and claim he was misrepresenting this issue. Having never lived in Minnesota and therefore not the slightest bit familiar with Shelby, I have no idea what his political leanings are beyond this bizarre mea culpa concerning global warming. For a clue, at his My Space page , Shelby lists one of his heroes as the perilously liberal Charles Kuralt, and claims the person he'd most like to interview is Osama bin Laden. This is a picture of him prominently displayed: Remind you of anything? (H/T NB reader Scott Taylor)
