‘We Are The 99 Percent’: Stories Of The Great Recession’s Victims (PHOTOS)

As protesters share their stories in Zuccotti Park, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and other cities across the country, some are taking to the web to express their discontent with the wealthiest one percent of America. “We Are The 99 Percent,” a Tumblr started in connection with Occupy Wall Street, features hundreds of personal stories from Americans affected by the Great Recession. The site, which launched Aug. 23, asks readers to submit their stories along with a photo. The Tumblr’s introduction highlights some of those stories: We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we’re working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent. The website showcases a variety of stories about the economy’s effect on ordinary Americans. Among them are a recent college graduate who is struggling with mountains of student loans and no means to pay them off beyond a part-time job. A 13 year-old girl worries if she’ll have the chance to go to college at all, while a father of two fears for his children’s futures. A victim of job cuts late in his career doubts if he’ll ever find employment again, and a veteran of Iraq questions the sacrifice he made to serve his country. Now in its third week, the Occupy Wall Street protests, criticized for lacking a clear objective, now seems only to be growing in strength despite this weekend’s arrest of 700 protestors. Here are some of the stories of contributors to “We Are the 99 Percent” on Tumblr. Note: The Huffington Post does not support or condone any of the views held in the photos below:

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory Provides X-Ray And Ultraviolet Images Of the Sun (PHOTOS)

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has been providing some stunning images of the sun since early 2010, but recently it began releasing daily images of the sun that will blow your mind. The $865 million project equipped the semi-autonomous SDO craft to orbit the sun for five years, sending back advanced data about the life-giving star. Among the data retrieved are these photos images, which picture the light thrown off by the star at wavelengths not typically visible to the human eye. These x-ray and ultraviolet images give a unique perspective and help scientists understand the internal motion of the giant ball of burning gas. NASA has begun releasing daily images of the sun, which you can check out in the slideshow below, or here on NASA’s website. In addition, the NASA site also has a number of 48-hour timelapse videos of the star, that you can check out for yourself.

Matthews: If Obama Loses in ’12 Conservatives Will Celebrate Death Penalty, Elevate Torture and Punish Gays

An overwhelming majority of Americans currently believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction. Yet MSNBC's Chris Matthews told his “Hardball” audience Monday about how wonderful the world will be if President Obama is reelected next year, and warned that a loss for the man that gives him a thrill up his leg would send “Tea Partiers and neocons…celebrating the death penalty, elevating torture, ending environmental protection as we know it, breaking unions, punishing gays, starting more wars, and enacting one more giant tax cut for the rich – or worse” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS: Should President Obama run for reelection as a passionate progressive daring to be called radical by his enemies? Should he shoot the moon like FDR did back in 1936 or should he head closer to the center, stake out common ground with independents warning against the radicalism of the Right? Should he play it shrewd like Clinton did in ’96? Well, think of the stakes. If he gets it right, he and the Democrats get four more years to get the economy finally back on track with full employment again the norm, the country heading forward to greener pastures, bluer skies, continuing the long, good march toward a cleaner environment, a protected climate, a more human, more tolerant, fully-employed society. Readers are reminded that when the Democrats took over Congress in 2007, the unemployment rate was 4.4 percent. Now it's 9.1 percent. Does Matthews know this? Has anything they've done since January 2007 gotten the economy on track leading to full employment? How does a so-called journalist go on national television praising the Democrats when their record the last four and a half years has been so atrocious? With his side lifted to unwarranted heights, it was time to attack the enemy: If he blows this election, the Tea Partiers and the neocons come roaring back emptying out the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute, erecting statues to Dick Cheney, celebrating the death penalty, elevating torture, ending environmental protection as we know it, breaking unions, punishing gays, starting more wars, and enacting one more giant tax cut for the rich – or worse. I guess Matthews forgot that Obama hasn't closed the terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay as he promised, has been quite a disappointment to the gay community with the exception of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, has started as many wars as his predecessor, and extended the Bush tax cuts. But people better vote for Obama next year or the world is going to come to an end.

Only in Japan: Toshiba’s Regza DBR-M190 serves 5TB of home media

Sometimes gigabytes aren’t enough. You have to start talking terabytes. That’s the case with Toshiba ‘s new Regza Server, more numerically known as the DBR-M190. The just-announced home media server boasts 5TB of storage, enough for 15 days of MPEG4AVC-compressed digital TV — from six different channels. Of course, that “server” in the name means you’ll be able to stream captured content as well. The sad news? “You” means only Japanese consumers. But if you’re one of the chosen many, this media-slinging behemoth will cost you 200,000 yen, or around $2,600. Scientists Back Up Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein Moon’ Claim

Even back in the 19th century, people wanted to know how authors got their ideas. Except, back then, not everyone believed the answers. Case in point: Mary Shelley’s account of where she got the idea for Frankenstein has long been disputed by literary scholars. In the preface to the 1831 edition of the novel, Shelley
