When Tea Partiers Attack — Each Other: New York Candidates Beat Each Other Up Claiming the Mantle

Click here to view this media It’s always kind of amusing watching Republicans fight over that cherished Tea Party endorsement the way dogs fight over a bone. As they apparently are in upstate New York’s congressional District 26 — the district where Christopher Lee most recently posed as a Republican congressman — where there’s now a disgruntled ex-Republican candidate named Jack Davis running as a third-party Tea Party candidate against a Republican who likewise claims various Tea Party endorsements. Seems things have gotten down to the usual thuggishness and pettiness : A 15-second video shows a tea party congressional candidate in New York scuffling with a Republican Party volunteer who questioned his absence from a debate. The video posted on YouTube shows candidate Jack Davis asking the volunteer Wednesday whether he wants to “punch it out” after a campaign event in Greece, outside Rochester. Davis was responding to the man’s repeated calls for him to explain why he backed out of a debate held Thursday in Buffalo. Davis announced Wednesday he’d changed his mind about participating in the debate with the two major party candidates in the May 24 special election for the 26th District seat. Instead, he said he’d speak to voters directly via an electronic town hall meeting May 21. In the video, the 78-year-old candidate steps toward the volunteer, who was holding a camera and asking, “Why did you back out of the debate? Why did you back out of the debate?” “Do you want to punch it out?” Davis asks before swiping at the camera with his right hand. Davis then laughs as he walks to his car while a man who appears to be a Davis campaign aide approaches the cameraman. As the camera shakes, the cameraman groans out of view as if he has been struck and then resumes asking Davis, “Why did you back out of the debate?” It turns out that the videographer is in fact the chief of staff for the Republican front-runner . Of course, the national Tea Party organizations are disowning Davis and claiming he’s a Democrat in disguise. Even though he in fact ran as a Republican candidate and earned the endorsement of the western New York Tea Partiers. This should be entertaining to watch, if nothing else.

A judge has ruled that developer Wayne Chang’s lawsuit against the Winklevoss twins can proceed and will have its day in court, the National Law Journal reports. Chang alleges he and his former company, i2hub Organization are entitled to receiving a portion of the $65 million settlement the Winklevoss twins were awarded in their lawsuit against Facebook. According to the Journal, “The surviving claims against the Winklevoss defendants include breach of contract, breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing, breach of partnership and breach of fiduciary duty.” In addition, Chang claims, “his memorandum of understanding with ConnectU entitles him to a 15% share of ConnectU for integrating i2hub’s peer-to-peer file-sharing software and ConnectU’s Web site.” Chang also claims he owned a 50% stake in ConnectU. Judge Peter Lauriat ruled that Chang’s suit against ConnectU, its co-founders (Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss), as well as ConnectU directors and shareholders (including the Winklevoss’s Harvard classmate Divya Narendra) could proceed, though the judge dismissed Chang’s claims against ConnectU’s law firm and Scott Mosko, one of the partners at the firm. Chang had accused the law firm of “professional negligence, civil conspiracy, aiding and abetting and interference with advantageous business relationships,” writes the Journal. The Winklevoss twins recently appealed the $65 million Facebook settlement, alleging that the social network had misrepresented the stock’s value and that they were entitled to more. Nobody likes being bothered while they’re really getting into a movie, and as we all know you can’t really get into a movie unless it’s in 3D. Right? Sir Ian McKellen took things a step further, not only watching a screening of The Hobbit in the third dimension but doing it in character, and looking ever so slightly perturbed at having his viewing session interrupted by a rogue photographer. The guy in the back doesn’t seem to mind, though. I've not been much of a fan of Time magazine for years, though I am again, if only briefly. Fresh off Rachel Maddow's ludicrous claim that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was “not all that well known” until he was killed by the US military in 2006 and allegedly elevated in death beyond what he was in life, Time magazine published a special issue titled “The End of bin Laden.” The cover of the magazine, which can be seen here , shows an illustration of bin Laden crossed out with a prominent red “X” — as in, buh bye. Turns out this is only the fourth time in Time's history that the magazine has gone with the “X” cover. Prior to bin Laden's rude awakening by Navy SEALs, Time did this for only three other globally reviled figures: Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein — and Zarqawi. (video after page break) Here's how Time managing editor Richard Stengel described “The Story of X” in the magazine's May 20 issue — For the fourth time in our history, we've put a red X over a face on our cover. The first time marked the death of Adolf Hitler in 1945. in 2003 we revived the X for Saddam Hussein on the occasion of the U.S.-led coalition's takeover of Baghdad. Three years later, we put it on the face of Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi, the scourge of Iraq. Now we use it to signal the death of the world's most-infamous terrorist, Osama bin Laden. Make that the virtually unknown “scourge of Iraq,” at least according to Maddow. As I wrote in a previous post , (with video from the post also embedded here) Maddow claimed that the Bush administration's decision to publicly display a photo of the deceased Zarqawi made him into “a much more well-known figure in death than he had been in life.” That being the case, count Time among Bush's conspirators in this fiendish plot, along with an equally reactionary right-wing publication — the New York Times. The Gray Lady devoted swaths of newsprint to the death of Zarqawi for its June 9, 2006 edition — lead story, three stories out front, three full pages inside, lead editorial and two op-ed columns, including one by the not all that well known Tom Friedman.
