Five soldiers were killed when the man known as Gulbuddin opened fire at a checkpoint in Helmand province in 2009 Five British soldiers shot dead by a rogue Afghan police officer were unlawfully killed, a coroner has ruled. David Ridley, coroner for Wiltshire and Swindon, recorded the verdict at the end of a four-day inquest in Trowbridge. The troops were gunned down without warning by an officer, known only as Gulbuddin, with whom they had been living at an Afghan police checkpoint in Nad-e-Ali, Helmand province. Warrant Officer Class 1 Darren Chant, 40, Sergeant Matthew Telford, 37, and Guardsman Jimmy Major, 18, from the Grenadier Guards, died alongside Corporal Steven Boote, 22, and Corporal Nicholas Webster-Smith, 24, from the Royal Military Police on 3 November 2009. The soldiers were sitting outside in the courtyard of Checkpoint Blue 25 relaxing, having returned earlier that day from a patrol. Their killer, a regular cannabis smoker, walked up to the soldiers and without warning shot them with an automatic AK47 rifle. The inquest heard harrowing evidence from troops who survived the massacre, describing how the Afghan police officer screamed as he fired indiscriminately. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the murders and some reports suggested Gulbuddin had escaped back to them, but military sources have suggested the attack was probably unconnected to the insurgents. No one knows why Gulbuddin opened fire, killing the five and wounding six troops and two Afghan police officers. He fled the checkpoint and was never caught. Some soldiers told the inquest he might have been shot dead in a gun battle immediately after the massacre. Speaking after the inquest, Boote’s mother and girlfriend spoke of their pride in him. . “We want Steven to be remembered because he was a hero and because he volunteered to fight for his country,” Margaret Boote and Emma Murray said in a statement. “He fought very hard to get a place on the team in Afghanistan and he was a highly valued and popular member of the Royal Military Police and of the Grenadier Guards Battle Group. “Steven paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country and he was immensely proud of what he was doing. “We are immensely proud of him and we miss him desperately but we know he was committed to the job he was doing.” Military Afghanistan guardian.co.uk

Alexander Mamut promises to refocus Waterstone’s as local bookseller – and will install Daunt Books founder to run it HMV Group has agreed to sell its Waterstone’s business, which operates through 296 high street stores, to Russian investment billionaire Alexander Mamut in a £53m deal. Mamut said he believed the future success of the chain lay in “an undiluted commitment to books and bookselling” and promised to refocus Waterstone’s as a local community book store. The sale was announced on Friday morning with a trading update confirming a dismal trading performance across HMV’s businesses since the start of the year. Comparable sales within the group’s music and DVD stores fell 15.1% for the 17 weeks to 30 April, while like-for-like sales at Waterstone’s over the same period were down 8.4%. Mamut has said he will install James Daunt, founder of the Daunt Books chain of independent bookshops in London, to run Waterstone’s. Current managing director Dominic Myers will remain within HMV. The new book store boss has promised a “comprehensive review” of the business. In a statement he said: “Mr Mamut’s investment has been inspired and motivated by the opportunity to refocus the core business of bookselling towards a renewed customer responsiveness.” Mamut added: “The opportunity ahead to reposition Waterstone’s as a regional and local community orientated bookseller is an exciting one. The business enjoys a great loyalty from its customers and I believe that there is considerable integrity and value in the brand.” Mamut, who owns 6% of HMV Group, is said to be a friend of Chelsea football club boss Roman Abramovich and was previously an adviser to Boris Yeltsin. For a period he ran MDM-Bank, founded by billionaire Andrey Melnichenko and in 2007 he acquired US blogging site LiveJournal.com. According to Forbes, he has a net worth of $1.2bn (£740m). The sale of Waterstone’s, which employs 4,500 staff, will provide a major boost for HMV chief executive Simon Fox as he continues to seek new borrowing terms from the firm’s banks after dire trading results left the business heading for a breach of its loan covenants. HMV’s lenders are led by Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland. He made clear the sale to Mamut would only go through if a new lending agreement could be reached. Proceeds from the disposal are expected to arrive by the need of next month, though HMV’s bank and pension trustees must first give their consent. Elsewhere HMV is pressing ahead with plans to close 40 stores in an effort to pare back its overheads. Continue reading …When Ronald Reagan took office many conservative operatives like Norquist thought he was pretty weak, but worked hard to starve the beast of money so that Democratic policies that helped working families would eventually be destroyed. I learned a lot about the history of Conservative politics as I researched our book, Over The Cliff. I watched Lawrence O’Donnell’s segment last night and he did a great job of giving viewers a refresher course that’s so badly needed. I’ll let Digby explain : I don’t know who the Democrats who voted for the Bush tax cuts and are now fighting to save Medicare are, but I have my doubts about the latter. I think those who voted for the Bush tax cuts are either standard corporate lackeys or political hacks who don’t care one way or the other about government programs, they just wear the blue jersey because it’s convenient. At this point we have to count on sheer political opportunism to make the Democrats fight to save Medicare — Ryan handed them a potent weapon if they choose to use it. But the rest of O’Donnell’s piece is correct and it’s worth listening to his recitation of the historical moments leading up to this to understand exactly how their plan worked. These deficits grew because the Republicans and their Democratic enablers cut taxes and destroyed the economy. Now they finally have their moment to enact their long sought spending cuts. Making Democrats do their dirty work for them is just frosting on the cake. I don’t think taxes have to be off the table. Bush Sr raised them in 1990 and Bill Clinton raised them in 1993. But it’s hard and it will take a piece of political hide out of the President and congress that does it. I had expected that the newly elected Democratic president with his historic mandate and Democratic congress would have immediately taken action to ensure that the tax cuts for the wealthy under Bush would expire. That could have been fairly easily done by extending the middle class tax cuts under the Stimulus Plan. (It didn’t happen, I suspect, because there were delusions of a Grand Bargain.) At any rate, he’s right that the current problem is the result of 30 years of relentless, demagogic, anti-tax rhetoric. You can call them crazy if you want but this has to be one of the most successful, long term conservative movement projects in history. Of course, head anti-tax activist Grover Norquist is the guy who greatly admired Lenin’s tactics , ( as did the CATO and Heritage institutes ) so they understood exactly what it was going to take. No matter how many times you tell Democrats about this Conservative strategy they for the most part look at you and give you a blank stare. It’s taken the Conservative movement over fifty years to enact their plans like starving the beast and it also needed a massive media machine to do it too. (Hint, hint, Fox News.) Grover Norquist, Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed were considered the Tea Party of the eighties and now what they believe is Conservative dogma of today. When will the Democratic Party finally understand this?

NEW YORK — Are these planets without orbits? Astronomers have found 10 potential planets as massive as Jupiter wandering through a slice of the Milky Way galaxy, following either very wide orbits or no orbit at all. And scientists think they are more common than the stars. These mysterious bodies, apparently gaseous balls like the largest planets in our solar system, may help scientists understand how planets form. “They’re finding evidence for a lot of pretty big planets,” said Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, who wasn’t involved in the research. If they orbit stars, their sheer number suggests every star in the galaxy has one or two of them, “which is astounding” because that’s five or 10 times the number of stars scientists had thought harbored such gas-giant planets, he said. And if instead they are wandering free, that “would be really stunning” because it’s hard to explain how they formed, he said. If that’s the case, it would give a boost to some theories that say planets can be thrown out of orbit during formation, said Lisa Kaltenegger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, another outside expert. Other scientists have reported free-wandering objects in star-forming regions of the cosmos, but the newfound objects appear to be different, said one author of the new study, physicist David Bennett of the University of Notre Dame. Bennett and colleagues from Japan, New Zealand and elsewhere report the finding in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature. They didn’t observe the objects directly. Instead, they used the fact that massive objects bend the light of distant stars with their gravity, just as a lens does. So they looked extensively for such “microlensing” events. They found 10, each caused by one of the newfound objects. They calculated each object has about the mass of Jupiter, and estimated how common such objects are. They also found no sign of a star near these bodies, at least not within 10 times the distance from Earth to the sun. (For comparison, within our solar system that would basically rule out an orbit closer than Saturn’s.) So the newfound objects either orbit a star more distant than that, or they don’t orbit a star at all, the researchers concluded. They drew on other data to determine most of the objects don’t orbit a star. Scientists believe planets are formed when disks of dust that orbit stars form clumps, so that these clumps – the planets – remain in orbit. Maybe the newfound objects started out that way, but then got tossed out of orbit or into distant orbits by the gravitational tugs of larger planets, the researchers suggest. The work suggests that such a tossing-out process is quite common, Bennett said. Boss said maybe the bodies formed around a pair of stars instead, one of which supplied the gravitational tug. But even that would take some explaining to produce an object without an orbit, he said. Or maybe they somehow formed outside of any orbit. So the theoretical challenge in explaining the existence of such bodies is “exciting,” he said. Boss said he suspects most of these are in a distant orbit, and that maybe they even formed at that great distance rather than being tossed outward from a closer orbit. Kaltenegger also said the new results can’t rule out the possibility that these possible planets are in orbit, and that they may only have the mass of Saturn, about a third of Jupiter’s. But if they aren’t orbiting a star, she noted, they don’t fit the official definition of a planet – at least not the definition applied to objects in our own solar system. NEW YORK/BOSTON (By Frank Tang and Aaron Pressman) – Billionaire financier George Soros, who called gold “the ultimate bubble,” dumped almost his entire $800 million stake in bullion in the first quarter, well before a commodities slump blamed partly on reports he was liquidating his holdings. Famed gold bull John Paulson held his ground, but Soros was joined in the retreat by several other big names, including Eric Mindich and Paul Touradji, according to 13-F filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that provide the best insight into where hedge funds are placing their bets. Soros, who has been bullish on gold in the past several years, cut his holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD.P: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to just $6.9 million by the end of first quarter, compared with $655 million in December, becoming the most high-profile investors to turn his back on one of the market’s best-performing assets. He also liquidated a 5 million share stake in the iShares Gold Trust (IAU.P: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the filings showed. His total holdings in gold-backed ETFs was $774 million as of December. Gold rose for a tenth consecutive quarter in the three months to March, hitting record highs above $1,400 an ounce, buoyed by political turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa and lingering worries about indebted European countries. The gains accelerated in April, but peaked at the start of this month, reaching a record $1,575 an ounce on May 2. Prices have since fallen more than 5 percent amid the biggest commodities slump since late 2008, a move partly triggered by a Wall Street Journal report that Soros’ $28 billion fund was selling precious metals — and felling fears other big funds were also seeing a peak. Eric Mindich, who runs the Eton Park Capital Management, nearly halved his stake in the SPDR gold trust to $326 million for the first quarter, a filing showed on Monday. Mindich’s fund also owned $839 million worth of call options by the end of first quarter, compared with $1.1 billion worth of put options at the end of the fourth quarter. Touradji Capital Management, one of the world’s largest commodities-oriented hedge funds run by Paul Touradji sold 173,000 shares in the SPDR Gold Trust during the quarter. Those shares would be worth about $25 million at current prices. But John Paulson, who notched the industry’s biggest ever payout last year, kept his 31.5 million share or $4.4 billion stake in the SPDR fund, remaining the biggest shareholder of the world’s largest gold-backed exchange traded fund for the quarter, according to regulatory filings. DEFLATION THREAT RECEDES The sales make sense given that Soros said he had bought gold because he was worried about deflation, said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Pittsburgh. “It’s pretty hard to make the case for deflation right now so if that was a reason you were buying gold, you should take this signal from Soros,” he said. Inflation is now the greater concern, Luschini said. So most investors should still keep about 3 percent to 5 percent of their assets in gold to protect against inflation and possible further problems in the world financial system. Soros also slashed stakes in gold and silver mining companies during the first quarter. The firm owned 1.4 million shares of Kinross Gold (K.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) at the end of the quarter, down from 4 million shares three months earlier. Holdings in Novagold Resources (NG.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) dropped to 3.5 million shares from 12.9 million. Gold ended the first quarter little changed, as the spot gold prices were only $10 higher to end at $1,430 an ounce on March 31, and the SPDR Gold Trust was up 1.3 percent. In the second quarter, gold hit a record high $1,575.79 an ounce on May 2 fueled by the outlook of low U.S. interest rates. So far in the second quarter, SPDR Gold Trust’s bullion holdings gained only about 1 percent to 1,229 tonnes as of Friday, well below its record high at 1,320.436 tonnes set on June 29 last year.
