May 27, 2011 No CommentA Wisconsin man was arrested Wednesday after he told police that he had traveled to Madison to shoot an abortion provider “right in the head.” Employees at a Motel 6 in Madison called police after Ralph Lang, 63, told them he had accidentally discharged a firearm in his room, according to a criminal complaint provided to The Wisconsin State Journal . Lang told Madison Police Department Officer Angie Dyer that he had purchased the gun in 2009 to “lay out abortionists because they are killing babies.” The criminal complaint (PDF) explains that he told the officer he intended to find the abortion doctor at the local Planned Parenthood clinic and “shoot him in the head.” Asked if he intended to shoot only the doctor or the nurses too, he replied that he wished he “could line them up all in a row, get a machine gun, and mow them all down.” Lang recalled that he was in Madison the prior week but did not murder anyone because he “was not 100% in sync with God.” Officers found a map in the suspect’s room with dots in each state and the words “some abortion providers.” The phrase “Blessed Virgin Mary says Hell awaits any woman having an abortion” was also written on the map. In an interview with investigators, Lang said that he had driven by the Planned Parenthood clinic at approximately 5:30 p.m. to see if anyone was there. “I wish I’d done heaven’s will right away,” he said. “What was I going to do? Take a gun, drop the abortionist.” When asked where he intended to shoot the abortion doctor, he said, “right in the head.” Lang had a .38 caliber pistol and about 35 bullets with him at the time of his arrest. In 2007, Lang was arrested at the same Planned Parenthood clinic after he told an officer that the “Bible states that anyone involved in abortion should be executed.” He charged that law enforcement had not been doing their job by not executing people at the clinic. “With the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Madison Police Department, we have taken the security precautions necessary to continue with our work,” Teri Huyck, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, told the paper. Abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was killed at his church in Wichita, Kansas almost two years ago when anti-abortion activist Scott Roeder shot him in the head. Roeder was sentenced to life without parole for 50 years.

After 272 episodes of solving especially vexing murders, Detective Elliot Stabler and NBC couldn’t crack the Case of the 13th Season Contract. And so after years of primetime glory, crime fighting and an Emmy nomination to boot, Christopher Meloni has left the Special Victims Unit. TV Line reported on Tuesday night that Meloni has left the NBC hit “Law & Order: SVU,” exiting after contract negotiations fell through between the star and network. Series creator Dick Wolf is already searching for a big name replacement — unfortunately, CBS has already gobbled up Ashton Kutcher for a similar series-saving move — the site reports, though the network chose not to comment. The shock move comes hot on the heels of speculation about the future of the show’s other star, Mariska Hargitay. Though she’s under contract for the upcoming season, NBC president Bob Greenblatt admitted that, given her new child, she may not be back for a 14th. That has put producers in the position of having to reduce her role in the upcoming season, moving her to a supervisory role — and potentially replacing her with former “Ghost Whisperer” star Jennifer Love Hewitt. Ed Schultz will take one week of unpaid leave from MSNBC following his controversial comments about Laura Ingraham. On his radio show Tuesday, Schultz called Ingraham a “right-wing slut.” Wednesday evening, the network released the following statement about the matter, saying “remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated”: MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. It is not the first time Schultz’s fiery rhetoric has gotten him in hot water. Last summer, Schultz was reportedly chastised by MSNBC execs after threatning to “torch this place” if he was not included in network promos. In a May 26 New York Times op-ed piece entitled “America's Forgotten Liberal” (HT Jim Taranto at the Wall Street Journal's Best of the Web ), Rick Perlstein opened by telling readers that “January was the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth.” Oops. Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 . Here's a graphic capture of Perlstein's first two paragraphs: Maybe the problem is that Perlstein was so excited when he found out that Reagan's 100th birth anniversary was coming up that he started celebrating a week or so early. Paragraph 2 captured above accurately previews how the rest of the op-ed by the author of “Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America” is pathetically weak “what if” dreck over which the further use of bandwidth is not warranted. Perlstein's only other tagged appearance at NewsBusters came courtesy of Ken Shepherd, who documented the writer's opinion that “Obama Needs to Be as Stubborn as Reagan Was.” One thing for sure: Perlstein, and apparently the fact-checkers at the Times, are about as good with dates as Barack Obama . Jealous of your Nexus S-owning friends and their fancy NFC chips after yesterday’s Google Wallet announcement? Well tech tinkerer Joe Desbonnet has whipped up what he dubs “poor man’s NFC” using an Arduino , some magnet wire, and any compass-equipped Android smartphone (which is almost all of them). By placing a coil of wire on the phone and connecting it to the DIYer’s favorite microcontroller, Desbonnet was able to send data, albeit very slowly, to his HTC Desire running a special app to decode the signals. Granted, you’re probably not going to see American Eagle mod their point of sale systems to talk to your phone’s magnetometer, but it’s still a neat trick. In fact, we’d break out our Arduino right now to give it a try, but our secret lair is strangely devoid of enameled copper wire.
