Hundreds of Palestinians cross reopened Gaza-Egypt border

Post-revolution move is hailed as ‘first step towards breaking the siege’, but Israel voices concerns Egypt has opened its border with Gaza, letting Palestinians leave the blockaded territory, in a move seen as indicating a more supportive policy since February’s revolution. Hundreds of people laden with luggage gathered at the Rafah crossing in the south of Gaza before the border opened at 9am. Around 300 crossed in the first hours and officials said they expected up to 1,000 to leave Gaza by the end of the day. Women, children and men over the age of 40 will be permitted free travel from Gaza to Egypt, but men under 40 will be required to apply for and be granted a visa. A large proportion of Gaza’s 1.5 million population is aged between 18 and 40. The crossing will open for eight hours a day, six days a week. In the four years since Hamas took control of Gaza, 18 months after winning elections, and Israel imposed a stringent blockade, the Rafah border has opened intermittently and only students, businessmen and people needing medical treatment have been allowed through. All other border crossings are with Israel, which has tightly controlled the movement of people and goods. Despite easing the blockade almost a year ago, Israel continues to proscribe certain goods, such as construction materials, from entering Gaza and blocks nearly all exports. Rafah will not be open to commercial traffic. Israel’s government has expressed concern that the reopening of the border will lead to the shipment of weapons and militants into Gaza and is also alarmed at the prospect of closer ties between the new Egyptian government and Gaza. Former president Hosni Mubarak, who was forced out in February’s revolution, was seen as an ally of Israel. The new government last month brokered a reconciliation deal between rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, including an agreement to open the border. “People are happy Rafah is open, they say it’s the first step towards breaking the siege of Gaza,” said local journalist Hazem Balousha. “They see it as a result of the Egyptian revolution and reconciliation.” Ghazi Hamed, the Hamas official who oversees the border from the Gaza side, said he hoped that 1,000 people would be able to cross each day. “We will co-operate with the Egyptian brothers to make sure the new arrangements get implemented smoothly and accurately,” he said. Rick Perry said Friday he will consider a run for the Republican presidential nomination. “I’m going to think about it” after the Texas legislative session ends on Monday, Perry told reporters in Austin after a bill signing. Perry added, “But I think about a lot of things.” Perry’s remarks come on the heels of a Fox News interview this week in which he admitted that he is “tempted” to run for president. “Oh, I can’t say I’m not tempted, but the fact is this is something I don’t want to do,” Perry said. For all of our sakes, let’s hope he doesn’t want to do it so much he drops the idea altogether. Though I confess this much: It would be very entertaining to watch Perry, Bachmann and Sarah Palin “debate”.

Kara DioGuardi Talks ‘American Idol,’ Pot Brownies At Paula Abdul’s House

While Kara DioGuardi and Paula Abdul were often seen as rivals during their short time together on “American Idol,” but as it turned out, the two actually bunked together before Kara ever joined the show. And while that did lead to a DioGuardi hospital stay, Abdul had nothing to do with it — unless she’s secretly a devious baker, that is. Appearing on “Lopez Tonight” on Wednesday to push her new show, “Platinum Hit,” DioGuardi, the short-lived “Idol” judge, told the host about a certain baked good she ingested while Abdul was on vacation. Let’s just say chocolate wasn’t the featured ingredient in the treat. “There were these, little nuggets, little, you know, take six, not a lot. Six hours later I was like, ‘heeeey, what’s going on?’” DioGuardi remembered. “I fell out of bed, on the floor, I stumbled downstairs and I was like, ‘I ate too much.’ And the ambulance comes and is like, ‘this b*tch is as high as a kite.’” The end result? Three days in the hospital, hallucinations and IV fluids. But it could have been worse. “The maid took them out, she was in the hospital, I had six, I almost died,” she said. But no worries: the brownies didn’t belong to Abdul, she said; instead, a friend had left them there after a party. What were actually in those brownies, though, remains unknown. DioGuardi also spoke about her friendship with Steven Tyler and how she got him the “American Idol” job, as well as her new show, “Platinum Hit.” WATCH:

Tantaros on Schultz-Ingraham Affair: ‘Hatred Towards Conservative Women is Last Acceptable Misogyny in U.S.’

Fox News contributor Andrea Tantaros might have had the best take on this week's Ed Schultz-Laura Ingraham affair . Appearing on “Hannity” Thursday, Tantaros accurately said, “It is the last acceptable form of misogyny in this country – hatred, prejudice towards conservative females” (video follows with transcript and commentary): SEAN HANNITY, HOST: All right. Let me ask both of you. Let me just go back to the issue of free speech. Ed Schultz, comments about Laura Ingraham, followed by a suspension, followed by an apology. My attitude is I believe in free speech. Did they handle this correctly? KIMBERLY GUILFOYLE, FOX NEWS LEGAL ANALYST: I think they handled it correctly. And really, his conduct was inexcusable. I think his apology was somewhat sincere. But nevertheless, where do you go off like saying something like that about her? It's totally inappropriate. HANNITY: What if I called any Democratic woman a slut? ANDREA TANTAROS, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Oh, forget about it. Look, Laura Ingraham is an attractive, conservative white female, blonde. They hate conservatives. Sean, it is the last acceptable form of misogyny in this country – hatred, prejudice towards conservative females. Look what happened to Don Imus? He was fired. HANNITY: Bachmann and Palin continued. TANTAROS: Yes, Sean, you would be fired too. I'm all for free speech. It is what I do. It lets me sit here but it means responsible speech. Can I point out this morning on MSNBC, the special, how to empower women or some special about knowing your value. How ironic that Mika Brzezinski hosts a special this morning about knowing your value, huh? HANNITY: All right. TANTAROS: Hypocritical. HANNITY: Guys good to see you both. I appreciate it. TANTAROS: Yes. Good to see you, Sean. Of course, Tantaros was correct. What America has painfully learned since former Alaska governor Sarah Palin was first announced as John McCain's running mate in 2008 is that it is completely acceptable for media members to mercilessly attack a woman in print or on television and radio if she is a conservative. In reality, not only is it condoned, it's applauded. You can even win awards for doing so – just ask Katie Couric. Sadder still is that the Left is constantly carping and whining about the scarcity of women in politics. Maybe if they wouldn't attack every conservative female that deigns to enter public life there'd be more of them – or is that just too darned logical for a liberal? Nicely said, Andrea. Brava!
