Maximo Altez, the Peruvian attorney representing Dutch murder suspect Joran van der Sloot, has unexpectedly quit the case, a newspaper reports. The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports that Altez said he will no longer represent van der Sloot due to ongoing disputes over the payment of bills. The newspaper also reports that van der Sloot and his attorney have been unable to agree on an appropriate defense strategy. Van der Sloot has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the slaying of Peruvian business student Stephany Flores. He is also a longtime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, a U.S. teen who went missing during a trip to Aruba. Investigators believe Flores was killed on May 30, 2010 — exactly five years after Holloway disappeared. The Alabama teen’s body has never been found, and van der Sloot has never been charged in her disappearance. He was indicted in the United States on charges that he extorted $25,000 from the young woman’s parents. Prosecutors said that in exchange for the money, he promised to reveal how Holloway died and the location of her body. Altez’ decision to quit comes less than two months after his client reportedly offered to plead guilty in the killing of Flores. The Dutchman planned to argue temporary insanity in a bid to significantly shorten his sentence, Altez told The Associated Press in March. Van der Sloot is scheduled to appear in court next week in Peru for a pro forma hearing, during which prosecutors will present evidence in Flores’ slaying. It remains unclear how this latest development will affect that schedule. WATCH:

NPR host Brooke Gladstone admits that journalists are generally more liberal than regular Americans, but she thinks they overcompensate for their bias by giving too much of a voice to conservatives. For instance, Gladstone believes conservatives do not deserve an equal voice with liberals in the global warming debate. Gladstone, whose interview appeared on the blog of CNN's In the Arena, has voiced in the past that the media have a “tendency to bend over backwards to prove they aren't liberal.” In the interview she clarified the media's over-reaction as “fairness bias.” Aren't those two words contradictory? Apparently not for Gladstone, who thinks the press can be “too fair” to conservatives in giving them more air-time than liberals, or granting them an equal voice when their argument doesn't warrant such a pedestal. According to her, this is the product of conservatives “hammering” the liberal bias of the media since the days of Nixon. “I do not for a second advocate banning any voices from the air, but to give equal time to those who dispute say, global warming, merely muddies the water,” Gladstone claimed. “The public is not served by hearing prolonged presentations of a nonsensical debate. This year, Tokyo’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation is celebrating its 10th anniversary — a milestone that Mitsubishi is commemorating with a giant OLED globe. Comprised of over 10,000 Diamond Vision OLEDs (each measuring 96 x 96mm), the six-meter ‘Geo-Cosmos’ installation will hang about 18 feet above the museum floor, where it will beam clouds and other satellite images at a resolution of 10 million pixels. It may not be the first curved OLED we’ve seen from Mitsubishi, but it’s the first that could double as a pretty sick disco ball. A 10-inch followup to the BlackBerry PlayBook seemed inevitable and indeed, tidbits about a rumored larger-screen version are starting to flow fast and furious. N4BB , which recently managed to spy the 9900 before it was unveiled, is citing anonymous sources who claim it will have a thinner bezel, a SIM card slot, a white color option, and, like the soon-to-be upgraded 7-inch version, 4G / WiFi connectivity. What’s more, these sources assure us this new PlayBook will have native email and calendar apps and be able to connect to BlackBerry Enterprise Server without the help of BlackBerry Bridge — a confounding quirk on the current model. That’s all well and good (and fairly realistic), though we’ll just have to wait until that rumored holiday launch — or a more unequivocal leak — to see what RIM has up its sleeves.
