Did Weiner Actually Cheat? Maybe Not

With The New York Times reporting that Congressman Anthony Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin is pregnant, the story of Weiner’s online affairs has new legs. It seems like every day, there’s a new touch that just makes the whole thing even worse. Could Weiner’s wrongdoing rival the 14 years of lies and deception of former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who had an affair with the household maid in his marital bedroom and got her pregnant at the same time that he was trying to get his wife pregnant, and then allowed his uninformed wife to send baby gifts and money to this mistress? Is Weiner as bad as that? No, for two reasons: 1) These were online affairs — terrible, but at least these e-mistresses didn’t spend their days with him and his wife, and 2) Weiner may not have been cheating at all. The definition of cheating is actually quite a personal thing. For every couple, a different line between right and wrong is drawn. For example, one couple for whom I mediated a number of issues, discovered through conversation that viewing porn online was acceptable to both of them. From that point on, the husband, who had been doing this in secret, no longer had to fear being walked in on and wrecking his marriage over this. It seems from the news reports and Anthony Weiner’s own words that “Ms. Abedin knew about his rakish past, including his use of social media for sexual communication.” He also said that she knew about his online relationships, but not his use of photos. Meanwhile the New York Post is reporting that his savvy political wife is working with him to plan a comeback, or at least survive this crisis. Why would she jump to his side? Why is she so quickly supporting him? My guess is that she may have been quite aware of his online tendencies and rational enough to know that such things do not disappear on one’s wedding day. In fact, for all we know, they could have made a deal that online affairs do not count as cheating. Perhaps they create a political tornado, but maybe they are not such a marital disaster, for them. Radio shows around the country have been asking me “what counts as cheating?” I answer each host the same way — it depends on the couple’s agreement. What is your agreement with your mate? To deter cheating, every couple must have a brief 5-minute conversation (See Fight Less, Love More for a chapter on how to do this) about what counts as cheating — physical sex? Emotional closeness to someone of the opposite sex? watching porn? Being in a sex chat room? Sexting? Using Facebook to connect with old flames? There are no absolute answers, only the ones that you and your mate agree upon. You’d be surprised to discover that no two people think alike.

Self-Confidence: 4 Ways To Build It So You Can Live the Life of Your Dreams

No matter what you want to do in life — whether you want to be an Academy-Award-winning actor, a CEO of a big company, a sought-after speaker or the winner of a marathon — having self-confidence is essential for your success. Without a healthy dose of confidence, you’ll never take the steps needed to make your dream come true. That’s why, before embarking on any endeavor, you need to build up your confidence level and know you are worthy of what you desire. When I was in my early 20s, I met Pete Wilson, a politician who was running for governor of California. I asked him how he got the drive and stamina to run for office. After all, political races are so vicious, and you have to really believe in yourself and want to make changes in order to go through what politicians go through. Mr. Wilson said, “You yourself have to think you’re great, because no one else is going to tell you that you are.” His words are so true! To live the life of your dreams and do whatever it is you want to do, you have to first build your own self-confidence and not depend on or wait for anyone else’s approval. Remember, how you see yourself and what you believe about yourself is more important than what anyone else thinks. If you don’t work at loving, accepting and believing in yourself, then your fears will paralyze you. Being happy and fulfilled, and having your heart filled with peace, starts with you. It’s an inside job. Following are four steps that can help you build your self-confidence. 1. Acknowledge your uniqueness. Believe in yourself and know that you are one of a kind. In the words of Walt Whitman, know “[t]hat you are here — that life exists and identity, / That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” There is no one else like you on this planet. No one looks like you or has the same talents and perspective as you. You are unique and are therefore here to make your unique contribution. If we each focus on what we bring into the world to share, there can be no comparisons, envy or regret. We are here to “contribute a verse.” What will your verse be? If you’re not sure yet or don’t like your verse so far, take some time and think about it. Think about what you would do with your time if you had one month to live and a million dollars. What advice would you pass on to those you love? Whatever your answers are, that’s what’s unique about you. 2. Confront your fears. Nothing destroys self-confidence more than succumbing to fear. Everyone feels fear at various times; we’re human. But facing circumstances with courage and poise strengthens character and builds self-confidence. Recently, I boarded a plane and went, by myself, to Jordan. People told me, “You’re nuts. You’re walking into the lions’ den.” Yes, I was a white female traveling alone in a mostly Muslim country, but I refused to let fear dictate my life’s journey. I had visited Jordan in the past and wanted to revisit it before teaching a class in Egypt. This was going to be “my” time to go deep, relax and meditate before the class. I ended up having a great time. I slept under the black sky and bright stars in a cave and felt more alive, inspired and full of life. By confronting any fears I may have had and giving to myself, I was able to build my confidence and give more to my clients. I was able to share from a deeper level and give channeled and inspired counseling by spending time in silence in breathtaking surroundings, instead of give a mundane, regurgitated speech. 3. Accomplish something — no matter what. Set goals for yourself and then push yourself to reach them. Self-confidence soars when you know you can do what you put your mind to. It makes you feel unstoppable. If you feel like you don’t have the strength to do it alone, get a coach! Remember that everybody has setbacks and obstacles to contend with. Don’t let them undermine your confidence. Treat them as opportunities to strengthen your resolve and then persevere. Overcoming adversity and accomplishing something builds and strengthens self-confidence. The greatest songs, works of art and literary pieces have been written by those who have experienced the depths of despair, loss and emptiness — and overcame them. Experiencing sadness and loss and then rising above it gives rise to hope and triumph. It makes you stretch and become more than you were. When you do the best you can, with the best of what you’ve got, you can’t help but feel good about yourself. That confidence then comes through in everything you do. 4. See the positive in every situation. You are not what happens to you or how you believe others see you. In other words, you are not defined by what happens to you or how others see you. You are who you choose to be — hopefully, you choose to be a person of character, dignity and self-confidence. When you see the positive in every situation, it’s easier to make that choice. I recently spoke at an event that was supposed to be for Youth Leaders Causing Leaders. When I arrived, it turned out that I only had two teenagers in the audience, while the rest were adults. I had to scrap my speech and improvise a speech based on my new audience. I was thrilled that the talk was only scheduled for 20 minutes, instead of the usual 45 to 60 minutes. Several other speakers chose to cancel because they felt the event was not organized properly and they didn’t have something prepared for this age group. Rather than view the situation as a negative, I saw it as a positive. I saw it as a challenge. I saw the glass as half-full instead of half-empty because it forced me to dig deeper and come up with a 20-minute presentation about leadership that would help motivate and inspire the audience I had in front of me, not the one I had prepared for. Right before I took the stage, the producer asked if I could speak for 60 minutes because the other two speakers had cancelled. I gladly accepted, not having anything prepared except for my inner resources. No notes, bullet points, nothing. Look at whatever challenge you’re facing. How can you see the glass half-full? When you’re able to, you’ll tap into reservoirs of self-confidence you never knew you had. Your confidence and potential are limitless. Self-confidence is essential for achieving success in any endeavor. And you develop your self-confidence by doing, learning, accomplishing and persisting — not by talking about it and criticizing others who are doing things. So work on increasing your self-confidence every day. When you do, you’ll have the key ingredient for reaching your goals and living the life of your dreams.

Gabrielle Giffords Photos: First Images Of Congresswoman Since Arizona Shooting

PHOENIX (Associated Press) — The first photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Tucson about five months ago were released early Sunday. The photos appeared on her Facebook page. (SCROLL DOWN FOR ADDITIONAL PHOTO) The Facebook photos, taken May 17 outside her Houston hospital, are the first clear snapshots of Giffords since the shooting five months ago during a constituent meet-and-greet in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson. The photos showed how far she has come since she was wounded in the left side of her forehead, but her spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, has cautioned that Giffords still has a long way to go in her recovery. They show the congresswoman outside, the greenery of the hospital lawn in the background. She smiled directly into the camera in one, while in the other she smiled downward as she sat next to her mother, Gloria Giffords. Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords. Carusone said Friday that Giffords could be released sometime this month. She said doctors and family are considering “many factors” while making the critical next-step decision to release Giffords from TIRR Memorial Hermann, the hospital where she has been undergoing intensive daily rehabilitation since late January. “We’re looking at before the end of the month. We’re looking at early July,” Carusone said. “We don’t have a date.” But in an interview published this week in the Arizona Republic, Carusone made clear that Giffords remains a shadow of her former self as she has difficulty stringing together sentences and relies heavily on gestures and facial expressions to communicate. She also faces some difficulty in expressing bigger, more complex thoughts, Carusone said. While Giffords’ release from the hospital after five months of intensive inpatient therapy will mark an important step in her recovery, she still must undergo months of outpatient rehabilitation that will include speech, occupational and physical therapy. Since the shooting, the only time the public has gotten a glimpse of Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage, taken from afar, showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walk up the airplane’s stairs. The newly released photos, shot by Tucson photographer P.K. Weis just before surgery on her skull, provide a much clearer image. Last month as Kelly was orbiting Earth, doctors repaired Giffords’ skull, finally freeing her from wearing a cumbersome protective helmet that her staff members say she hated. Since the shooting, Giffords has made remarkable strides, requesting her favorite foods, singing her favorite songs, and relearning how to walk and talk, although she struggles to string sentences together. In an interview with The Arizona Republic published Thursday, Giffords’ Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said Giffords’ limited speaking ability has led her to rely primarily on facial expressions and hand gestures to communicate. “She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she’s still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing,” Carusone said. “Add it all together and she’s able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that’s where she’s had the trouble.” Carusone also said that if Giffords’ recovery were to plateau now, “it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before.” “All that we can hope for is that she won’t plateau today and that she’ll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here,” she said. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting and is being held at a Missouri facility. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors hope his competency can be restored so he can answer for the charges.

US funds shadow networks, builds ‘internet in a suitcase’ for repressed protesters

Whether a repressive government , a buggy DNS server or a little old lady is behind your internet outage, it can’t be much fun, but the US government sympathizes with your plight if you’re dealing with reason number one. The New York Times reports that the US State Department will have spent upwards of $70 million on “shadow networks” which would allow protesters to communicate even if powers that be pull the traditional plug — so far, it’s spent at least $50 million on a independent cell phone network for Afghanistan, and given a $2 million grant to members of the New America Foundation creating the “internet in a suitcase” pictured above. It’s a batch of mesh networking equipment designed to be spirited into a country to set up a private network. Last we’d heard, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had pledged $25 million for just this sort of internet freedom, and the New America Foundation had applied for some of those bucks — see our more coverage links below — but it sounds like the money is flowing fast, and in multiple directions now. IMF cyber-attack led by hackers seeking ‘privileged information’

Experts suspect source of targeted attack to be nation state as reports suggest IMF systems have been under attack for months The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is investigating a serious cyber-attack in which some of its systems were compromised and used to access internal data. Security experts said that the source seemed to be a “nation state” aiming to gain a “digital insider presence” on the network of the IMF, the inter-governmental group that oversees the global financial system and brings together 187 member countries. Tom Kellerman, a cybersecurity expert who has worked for both the IMF and was in charge of cyberintelligence in the World Bank’s treasury team, said the intrusion could have yielded a treasure trove of non-public economic data used by the IMF to promote exchange rate stability, support balanced international trade and provide resources to remedy members’ balance-of-payments crises. “It was a targeted attack,” said Kellerman, who serves on the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance. The attack will increase concerns over low-level cyberwarfare waged by governments for economic and industrial espionage purposes, which have grown in recent weeks with announcements by the chancellor, George Osborne, of cyber-attacks on the Treasury and by defence secretary Liam Fox of a “sustained attack” on the Ministry of Defence . Earlier this year it was revealed that computers at France’s finance ministry had been hacked and were silently redirecting data to websites in China, apparently in an effort to steal documents relating to February’s G20 summit. The code used in the IMF incident was developed specifically for the attack on the institution, said Kellerman, now chief technology officer at cyberconsultancy AirPatrol. The World Bank said it had cut its network connection with the IMF out of caution, even though the information shared over the link was “non-sensitive”. The IMF insists that it remains “fully functional” while the FBI investigates the attack. An internal memo issued on 8 June from the IMF’s chief information officer, Jonathan Palmer, told staff that suspicious file transfers had been detected and that an investigation had shown a desktop computer “had been compromised and used to access some Fund systems”. Significantly, he said that he had “no reason to believe that any personal information was sought for fraud purposes”. That points to a cyber-attack which sought to gain deeper access to the organisation’s computers. The New York Times cited computer experts as saying that the IMF’s systems had been under attack for several months. Such attacks have grown in number and seriousness over the past two years. At the end of 2009, Google discovered that it had come under attack from hackers inside China who sought high-level access to its systems and targeted dissidents’ email accounts. Senior figures inside the search engine company are convinced the attack was orchestrated by the Chinese government. A number of other financial and military organisations came under attack at around the same time, and last month Google said that it had again detected “phishing” attacks aimed at capturing login details for US government officials emanating from China. The Chinese government denied involvement — though it had not been directly accused. “The attack was clearly designed to infiltrate the IMF with the intention of gaining sensitive ‘insider privileged information’,” cybersecurity specialist Mohan Koo, the managing director of Dtex Systems (UK) said, adding that the recent spate of attacks on large global organisations was worrying because they were targeted, well organised and well executed, not opportunistic. “Perhaps most frightening of all is the fact that these type of attacks could quite easily be directed towards critical national infrastructure (CNI) organisations, for example energy and water, where the impact of such a breach would have severe, immediate and potentially life-threatening consequences for everyday citizens.” Rich Mills, a World Bank spokesman, said: “The World Bank Group, like any other large organisation, is increasingly aware of potential threats to the security of our information system and we are constantly working to improve our defences.” News of the hack came at a sensitive time for the world lender of last resort, as it seeks to replace its former managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who quit last month after being charged with the attempted rape of a hotel maid. The French finance minister, Christine Lagarde, remains the frontrunner to replace him. Stanley Fischer, the governor of the Bank of Israel and a former IMF deputy chief, has emerged as a late candidate, and Mexico’s central bank chief, Agustin Carstens, is also a contender. Jeff Moss, a self-described computer hacker and member of the Department of Homeland Security advisory committee, said the IMF intrusion could inspire attacks on other large institutions. “If they can’t catch them, I’m afraid it might embolden others to try,” said Moss, who is chief security officer for ICANN, the internet registry system. Security experts said it would be difficult for investigators to prove which nation was behind the attack. “Even developing nations are able to leverage the Internet in order to change their standing and ability to influence,” said Jeffrey Carr, author of the book Inside Cyber Warfare. “It’s something they never could have done before without gold or without military might,” Carr said. The CIA director, Leon Panetta, told the US Congress on 9 June that the country faced the “real possibility” of a crippling internet-based attack on power systems, the electricity grid, security, financial and governmental systems. Lockheed Martin, the Pentagon’s top supplier by sales and the biggest information technology provider to the US government, disclosed two weeks ago that it had thwarted a “significant” cyber-attack. It said it had become a “frequent target of adversaries around the world”. Access to the website of Spain’s national police force was blocked for over an hour late on Saturday in a reprisal attack by the Anonymous hackers group, El Mundo said on its website.
