(Segment starts at 4:50.) Hmm. Maybe the Sunday news shows don’t want facts? This morning, This Week ran a John Donvan segment on women in politics, saying that women politicians don’t get involved in sex scandals. One of the pictures they ran? South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley . (I rest my case.) Then the show books outright loonies like Peggy Noonan as credible guests. This was a discussion about how the economy is affecting the presidential election: AMANPOUR: So I want to bring up the very amusing picture on the front of The Economist this week. Let’s just bring it up. You’ve got a picture of sort of squabbling Republicans, in terms of their vying for — for the nomination, and also you’ve got Obama standing there, saying, “And yet, I could still lose.” What is going on in the White House right now, Jake, in terms of concern about this very matter, that there’s no clear sort of giant to take him on, and yet, policy and the economics might do that? TAPPER: I think there’s an understanding that there will be a giant, and whether it’s Mitt Romney or — George and I have talked about this — probably more likely Tim Pawlenty, because Romney really alienates a lot of the Tea Party conservatives, and Pawlenty — there’s a real opening for him there, assuming Palin doesn’t run. Pawlenty, a giant? Giant what? The man’s a shameless shill and a buffoon. But I digress. I think there’s an understanding that there will be a formidable Republican opponent. The way they say it is President Obama, you know, he got every break he could possibly get in 2008 and still 47 percent of the country voted against him. They do not expect that 47 percent opposition to go down. They think it will go up. This could be a 1- or 2-point race, and a lot of it hinges on the economy. And right now, the president does not have a strong economic message. You saw the highest disapproval number for him when it comes to the economy, 59 percent of his presidency. That is a disastrous number, and it could really spell trouble for his re-election. WILL: In the first quarter, housing values in this country went down 4 percent. Another 10 percent decline on housing values will mean that one-third of all the Americans with mortgages will be underwater, that is, they will owe more on their homes than their homes are worth. That is terrifying to people. You add that to the jobs numbers and Goliath, as The Economist calls the president, Goliath is very vulnerable. AMANPOUR: Well, let’s talk about Pawlenty quickly, and then we’ll get to what you wanted to say, but he made a speech today on the economy. Let’s just put up a little bit of what he said. I want to get your reaction to that. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) PAWLENTY: Let’s start as a nation with a big, positive goal. Let’s grow the economy by 5 percent, instead of the anemic 2 percent currently envisioned. Such a national economic growth target will set our sights on a positive future. It’ll inspire the actions needed to reach it. (END VIDEO CLIP) AMANPOUR: So I know you’re considering Pawlenty as a real viable candidate. Do you think, though, that’s a bit fanciful? I mean, a lot of economists have said that 5 percent today is — I mean, it’s great, it would be great, but not really possible. WILL: A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, and that certainly does. Steady 5 percent growth probably won’t happen. Also, his pledge to get federal spending down to 18 percent of GDP is very hard to do with an aging population and a welfare state that exists to transfer wealth to the elderly. That said, he’s avoiding the austerity trap. He’s avoiding the green eyeshade, root canal kind of politics that Ronald Reagan avoided. Reagan said we’re going to get out of this mess with growth. At this point, by the way, in the Reagan recovery, after ’81-’82, the economy was growing at 7 percent. Once again, George Will’s rose-colored glasses mist over as he gazes back lovingly at the revered Age of Reagan. He’s lying, of course. In the Reagan recovery, economic growth tapped out at 4.9%. And he doesn’t mention that unemployment was at a high of 10.8% in December 1982, brought down to 7.2% by that hated deficit spending. That Keynesian stimulus helped Reagan win reelection by a landslide. Too bad that unlike Reagan, Obama faces obstructionist Republicans in Congress who only care about winning, and not about the country, and thus refuse any further stimulus. BRAZILE: Well, I don’t know if we’ll ever get back to 5 percent. One would hope that we could get back to 5 percent. We haven’t seen 5 percent steady growth since John F. Kennedy. And the only countries now with — producing 5 percent, 6 percent are the BRICs, Brazil, India and China. So the goal right now — the president must get Congress to focus on raising the debt ceiling, going forward with some kind of budget solution so that we can stop having these endless conversations on deficit, deficit, deficit. The biggest deficit we face in this country today is a jobs deficit. And there’s no evidence that the Republican practice of cutting the budget will in somehow create a new round of employment for — for growth to really occur in this country. NOONAN: I think there’s something powerful in the fact that Pawlenty — other candidates are saying, “Cut, we’ll get growth. Lower taxes, we’ll get growth.” In an interesting sort of way, he’s saying growth is the thing. And once we know that, then there are a number of things we’ve got to do, like cut — limit regulation, et cetera. So he’s just sort of turning the picture a little bit. Whenever I hear Nooners babble, I think of Chance the gardener in “Being There.” I do think for any Republican right now what is the emerging theme is — of Obama, he was handed a lot of bad stuff by history, two wars, recession, the big crash, the Great Recession, but he made it worse. (CROSSTALK) NOONAN: That’s what’s coming. Oh, my goodness. If you look at… BRAZILE: Fifteen months of consecutive job growth? Fifteen months. So we had a bad month, 55,000 jobs or less created. A month where we had the disaster in Japan, we had natural disasters, and of course we saw energy prices rise. The one thing that the Republicans have been doing since day one is downplaying the success that we’ve seen with some of the economic stimulus that the Democrats put in place.

Anthony Weiner Photos Scandal: New Pictures Surface, Congressman Says He Won’t Resign (PHOTO)

New photographs of a partially-nude Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) surfaced on Sunday in a report from TMZ.com. The dispatch of pictures appear to have been taken by Weiner himself in what is said to be the House Members Gym. TMZ.com reports that it has confirmed the location of where the photos were taken by the lawmaker on his Blackberry and says that it has confirmed they were sent to at least one woman. (Below, one of the images from TMZ. Click here to view all the photos released by the website.) A senior House Democrat has renewed her demand that Weiner “do the right thing” and resign from the House because of a sexting scandal on Sunday. Republicans, who’ve been keeping a low profile, are now accusing Democrats of showing poor leadership in dealing with Weiner. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the party chairman, said during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that she and other Democratic leaders “have made clear that he needs to resign.” But she says that “at the end of the day a member of Congress makes their own decision.” Weiner says he is seeking treatment but will not resign. Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus is criticizing Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi for not moving more quickly. He says Democratic leaders are “defending a guy who deserves no defense.” Weiner’s plan leaves top Democrats wrestling with how best to end the furor over the seven-term congressman’s misdeeds that could hurt the party’s prospects in the 2012 elections. Weiner’s announcement that he would request a leave from Congress came shortly after several Democratic Party leaders demanded he quit on Saturday. The Weiner spectacle, with raunchy online photos and messages, has been a huge embarrassment for Democrats who back in 2006 made GOP ethics misdeeds a part of their successful campaign to win control of the House. “This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the party chairwoman, said in a written statement calling for the 46-year-old married lawmaker from New York City to step down. The House Democratic leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, said Weiner “has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents and the recognition that he needs help. I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress.” Aides said later that Pelosi had been aware of Weiner’s plan to enter treatment when she issued her statement, and her call for a resignation had not changed because of it. Weiner’s spokeswoman, Risa Heller, said in a statement that the congressman departed Saturday morning “to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person. In light of that, he will request a short leave of absence from the House of Representatives so that he can get evaluated and map out a course of treatment to make himself well.” The statement did not say where he would receive treatment, or what type was involved. The developments occurred one day after Weiner acknowledged he had exchanged online messages with a 17-year-old girl in Delaware. He said nothing improper had passed between the two of them. CNN reports that the family of the teen issued a statement on Sunday saying the interactions “were not salacious or in any manner inappropriate.” Democrats said the concerted call for his resignation had been brewing for days, as senior party officials concluded the scandal was interfering with their effort to gain political momentum in advance of the 2012 elections.

Casey Anthony Trial: Bug Expert Says Evidence In Car Consistent With Decomposition

Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla.– Caylee Anthony’s skull and most of the rest of her remains were 19 feet from the road when they were found, a crime scene investigator testified Saturday. Defense attorney Jose Baez demonstrated the remains were virtually steps from the road, nearly the same distance as the jury from the defense table, by stretching a tape measure across the courtroom. That testimony that the scene was easily accessible from the road could be significant because defense attorneys claim the meter reader who found the remains tampered with them. The defense has said that the 2-year-old girl accidentally drowned in her grandparents’ swimming pool. More than 50 investigators recovered more than 390 pieces of evidence during 10 days at the wooded scene where Caylee’s remains were found, in the same residential neighborhood as the Anthony family home, said Jennifer Welch of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Among the items recovered were pieces of trash and black trash bags. The area was thick with vegetation, and investigators used a county-issued machete to clear some of the area so they could do their work, Welch said. Wearing blue gloves, she held up for the jury pieces of evidence recovered from the scene, including a piece of duct tape and pink lettering. The lettering was dirty and weathered and appeared to spell the word “package.” Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Anthony has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have identified duct tape as Anthony’s murder weapon. They contend she killed the toddler by covering her mouth and nose with it. Anthony looked away from pictures of the scene where Caylee’s remains were found. Earlier in the week, the judge ended the day early when Anthony grew ill during gruesome forensics testimony in which pictures of Caylee’s skull and other remains were shown. During earlier testimony on Saturday, Neal Haskell, an expert in forensic entomology, said Caylee’s remains were in the trunk of Anthony’s car for a few days before they were moved to the wooded area where they eventually were found. Evidence of insect activity at both locations supports the theory, he said. Haskell testified that there were insects related to decomposition in the trunk of Anthony’s vehicle. He said that flies investigators discovered were associated with some paper towels sent to a national laboratory and found to contain decomposition fluid. Caylee was missing for some seven months before her remains were found. Previous witnesses have testified on evidence of decomposition in the trunk of Anthony’s car, a white Pontiac Sunfire. “I have no question that body’s been out there for many, many months,” Haskell said of the scene where Caylee’s remains were found. Testimony resumes Monday. Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder in her daughter’s death. If convicted she could face the death penalty. Prosecutors say she suffocated Caylee Anthony with duct tape. The defense contends the girl died in her grandparents’ swimming pool.

AP Waffles on Calling Source of European E. Coli an ‘Organic’ Farm

On Wednesday evening in Europe (12:31 p.m. Eastern Time), in what it was already describing as “the world's deadliest known outbreak of E. coli,” the Associated Press reported that “No cause for the outbreak has yet been found,” while farmers on the continent were petitioning the EU for hundreds of million of dollars in compensation. By midday European time (6:27 a.m. ET) on Friday, June 10, it was known (“Sprouts are cause of E. coli outbreak”) that the contaminated food had come from Germany, when investigators “linked separate clusters of patients who had fallen sick to 26 restaurants and cafeterias that had received produce from the organic farm.” It is not my intention to get involved in a debate on farming techniques. But it seems obvious that if the outbreak came from an “organic” farming enterprise, follow-up stories should continue to mention
