The hackers, who describe themselves as “the world’s leaders in high-quality entertainment at your expense”, have gained international notoriety this month with a series of security breaches. Over the weekend LulzSec broke into a public website of the US Senate and released data stolen from the legislative body’s computer servers. Last week they hacked the website of an unnamed NHS organisation – one of England’s primary care trusts. The Department of Health said no patient’s medical records were accessed during the incident, which it described it as “a local issue” and “quite a low-level” lapse in IT security. Earlier this month LulzSec broke into the website of Sony Pictures Entertainment and exposed information from 37,000 users, including names, passwords, birthdates and email addresses. It also hacked into a webserver belonging to Nintendo in the US. The name of the group is derived from “LOL” (laugh out loud) and “security”. Because it is a SuperPAC created for the purpose of making independent expenditures on behalf of candidates, no disclosures must be made with regard to donors. However, there are some things we can learn about it from their FEC filing made earlier this week. TPM reported this yesterday: The spot is produced by Ladd Ehlinger, Jr., best known for his wildly popular Dale “Don’t Give A Rip” Peterson campaign video in the 2010 race for Alabama secretary of agriculture. Turn Right USA, the sponsor, is a brand new political action committee which only filed its paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Monday. The paperwork indicates that Turn Right USA intends to operate as a so-called “super PAC,” capable of raising funds in unlimited amount, but will not use those funds to directly support federal candidates or committees. Claude Todoroff serves as treasurer for the group, which is based in Gardena, Calif. G. Rick Marshall serves as the group’s designated agent. Here are some additional clues as to who would be paying for an ad like this: G. Rick Marshall is active in local Republican politics in that area. In 2007, he received an endorsement from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers’ Association when he ran for the Torrance Unified School District board. The treasurer of Huey’s campaign is David Bauer, who also served as treasurer for NOM-California and the Yes on 8 campaign. I can’t hand you a list of actual people contributing, but I think it’s fairly obvious we’re looking at the usual suspects in the arena of Tea Party funding. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit to find out after the fact to discover that Sal Russo and Co had their dirty little hands all over it, given Russo’s deep ties to the Yes on 8 campaign and other dirty enterprises. SKOPJE, Macedonia — Macedonia on Tuesday began assembling a controversial 22-meter-high (72-foot-high) bronze statue of Alexander the Great, a monument seen as a towering challenge to neighboring Greece’s claim on the ancient hero. Giant pieces of the monument were brought Tuesday to a cordoned-off area in the heart of Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, where construction of a pedestal is still under way. Over the next few days, cranes will be used to put together the parts of the statue, which some critics have accused of being a hubristic waste of money and the government says is an important part of city redevelopment. Although the statue is officially named “Warrior on a Horse,” the face closely resembles ancient depictions of Alexander, the warrior king born in Pella, northern Greece, who carved out an empire that reached the Himalayas before his death at age 32 in 323 B.C. Greece and Macedonia remain locked in a 20-year dispute over the right to claim the region’s ancient heritage, with conservative Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski on a drive to pin ancient labels on the country’s airports, highways and football stadiums – and now in Skopje’s main square. The two Balkan neighbors have failed to resolve a name dispute that has blocked the tiny republic’s accession to NATO and progress toward becoming a member of the European Union. Athens accuses its neighbor of falsely laying claim to its ancient heritage, and demands that the former Yugoslav republic modify its name so that it doesn’t imply a territorial claim to its own, larger, northern region of Macedonia. Macedonia, which gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, argues that its has been treated unfairly by its more powerful neighbor and says a 1995 agreement to change its constitution and flag should have ended any argument over potential claims on territory. Many of Gruevski’s critics in Macedonia voiced strong opposition to the statue project when the plans were first announced two years ago, arguing that it promoted nationalism, and that the venture was too costly in a country with staggering 32 percent unemployment. Several prominent architects also worried it would blight the city’s skyline. The statue will cost an estimated euro5.3 million ($7.7 million). The monument, designed by sculptor Valentina Stevkovska, is 12 meters (39 feet) tall and will be placed on a 10-meter (33-foot) fountain pedestal. The statue’s parts were built in Florence, Italy.
