Orrin Hatch in his Psycho Talk segment for his little screed this week saying that the poor need to “share some of the responsibility” for shrinking the debt. TPM has more on that. Dems Go After Hatch For Saying Poor Need To Do More To Shrink The Debt : The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is going after Sen. Orrin Hatch for saying that the poor need to “share some of the responsibility” for shrinking the debt. “The top 10 percent are paying 70 percent of all income taxes. The top 50 percent pay something like 98 percent of all income taxes. Fifty-one percent don’t pay anything,” Hatch said. “Democrats say they [the 51 percent] pay payroll taxes. Well, everybody does that because that’s Social Security. They pay about one-third of what they’re going to take out over the years in Social Security,” Hatch said . “Obamacare — a family of four earning over $80,000 a year — gets subsidies. Think about that. That’s what we call the poor?” “Republican priorities are completely out of whack and Orrin Hatch’s comments prove that point,” DSCC’s Shripal Shah told TPM. “It’s bad enough that Republicans are doing everything they can to protect tax breaks for millionaires and special interests, but the fact that the Republican idea of shared sacrifice means going after the those who are struggling the most is completely reprehensible,” Shah said. As I already pointed out here , Joshua Holland did a great job debunking last year why saying that the poor in this country don’t pay their share in taxes even if they don’t pay any federal income taxes is bunk. I wish Ed Schultz had made that point in this segment as well, but he didn’t. Maybe anyone that is on Twitter can make Ed and his staff aware of that fact on his feed at @WeGotEd.

Although the other late night shows’ monologue writers are most likely champing at the bit to spin a story about a mother possibly murdering her child into comedy gold, Leno’s jokes are by default the ones that will direct the national dialogue about how to joke about Casey Anthony. Unfortunately for Leno, he swung and missed. Badly. Remember in the mid 1990s when Jay Leno first made a name for himself as the host of “The Tonight Show” by introducing such classic bits as The Dancing Itos? Even though the O.J. Simpson homicide trial was 16 years ago, Jay hoped lightning would strike twice and he could turn the Casey Anthony child murder case into the next pop culture punchline. Except he did so by comparing the intelligence of the Florida jury that found Anthony not guilty to President Obama’s economic team, because obviously Jay Leno’s audience can’t get enough comparisons between banking deregulation and infanticide. Oh, but it gets better! When zero people in the audience laugh at Leno’s joke, he turns to the bandleader (who is not Kevin Eubanks) and expresses bafflement that the joke bombed before doing it again to thunderous applause. Let us know next time someone with the last name C.K. is on your show, Jay. WATCH: Via Gotcha Media.

A press release from Universal reveals that Spader has sealed a deal to join the show on a full-time basis, reprising the character he played during last season’s finale’s hunt for a new Scranton head honcho. But instead of settling for the desk in Pennsylvania, he ends up climbing much, much higher — to the top of Sabre. “James will reprise his role as Robert California, this uber-salesman that has a power to convince and manipulate, like a high-class weirdo Jedi warrior,” said Paul Lieberstein, one of the series’ executive producers and a series regular. “He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company. James has an energy that is completely his own, and ‘The Office’ has no tools for dealing with this guy. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.” Of course, that still leaves the boss’s chair in Scranton vacant. Following star Steve Carell’s announcement that he was leaving the hit comedy, Dunder Mifflin went on a huge head hunt for star power to keep the show going. Will Ferrell did them a solid by booking a four episode arc as the temporary boss, which was followed by a final episode with a long series of guest stars. But according to TV Line’s Michael Ausiello, the plan right now may be to hire from within. He says that the producers are, for now, deciding between Jim (John Krasinksi), Dwight (Rainn Wilson) and Andy (Ed Helms) to take the boss’s chair; on the show, Dwight and Andy both vied for the role, while Jim decided he didn’t want to be part of management (perhaps he can be convinced otherwise?). All this after a spring of new that led to the blowout episode with Will Arnett, Ricky Gervais, Spader, Jim Carrey, Ray Romano and Catherine Tate. Spader is best known for his runs on “Boston Legal,” and “The Practice,” for which he won Emmys, but also has a long film career that reaches way back to “Pretty in Pink.” Here’s the full release: UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (July 6, 2011) Multiple Emmy Award winner James Spader (“Boston Legal,” “The Practice”) will be joining the regular cast of NBC’s “The Office” (Thursdays, 9-9:30 p.m. ET) as CEO Robert California of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.” From 2004-08, Spader won three Emmy awards for his seminal role as shameless attorney Alan Shore in “The Practice” and “Boston Legal,” making him the only actor to win consecutive Emmys playing the same character on two different series. He is represented at ICM and Melanie Cook. “The Office” is executive-produced by Ben Silverman, Greg Daniels, who developed the series for American audiences, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein and Paul Lieberstein.
