Shaw Cable’s Netflix competitor bypasses bandwidth caps on its way to the TV

While US residents seethe over increases in Netflix’s pricing, our neighbors in Canada are upset by the competing Movie Club package Shaw Cable is offering. The $12 per month service offers unlimited access to “hundreds of the best Hollywood moves” and plans to have high definition feeds later this summer for an additional $5 (cable companies in the US have a similar scheme under the name Vutopia .) Causing the issue are promises that “the only limit is the number of hours in your day” unlike bandwidth capped streaming from unnamed services like Netflix. While Movie Club viewing over the internet on a PC, tablet or other device is capped just like any other service, access via the cable box is not metered. That distinction doesn’t sit well with subscribers and consumer groups arguing for net neutrality, particularly as the CRTC is in the midst of hearings over usage-based internet billing. While that case hasn’t been decided, our own ruling is already in and is firmly against Shaw, or anyone else, advertising based on advantages that exist only due to policies it created in the first place. The congressman brought a large wheel with him to the House floor Friday. Spinning the wheel determines which group won’t get paid when the Treasury runs out of cash. “[Republicans are] paying a game with our economy to force through an extremist agenda,” Deutch explained. “That’s what we’ve been battling against. That’s what you’ve been watching. That’s what people all around the country are so incredibly frustrated with. It’s a game that I have right beside me. There is nothing desperate about these housewives. Eva Longoria stars in the indie comedy, “Without Men,” as the de facto lady in charge of a Latin American village that loses all of its men when they are forcibly recruited by a bunch of guerilla revolutionaries. It looks like a largely fun film about women taking over the various unsavory roles that men fill in everyday society, with “The Office” star Oscar Nunez, as a priest, the only hombre in town. Eventually, American journalist Christian Slater comes to town and seems to spark a romance with Longoria’s character, but before that, any and all sexual interplay is strictly a ladies-only affair. Which means Longoria some lesbian moments — with co-star Kate del Castillo. “It was a little difficult as the two girls are both straight so they were very nervous and laughed a lot,” the film’s director, Gabriela Tagliavini, told Fox News. “But I think that just made it even lovelier. [Female audiences] don’t want to watch porn, so it was all very sensual, both are very beautiful women aside from being incredibly funny.” Of course, this isn’t the first time Longoria has dabbled in girls-only kissing on film — though she may want to forget the last time it happened. In April, Longoria re-upped her contract for “Desperate Housewives,” and she’ll also soon star in “The Baytown Disco.” Based on James Cannon’s best selling book, “Tales From the Town of Widows,” the film hits theaters July 29th. As NewsBusters has been reporting, Friday's installment of HBO's “Real Time” contained possibly the most vile political talk ever aired on national television. In the final segment, host Bill Maher said, “Sarah Palin is a vainglorious braggart, a liar, a whiner, a professional victim, a scold, a know-it-all, a chiseler, a bully who sells patriotism like a pimp, and the leader of a strange family of inbred weirdos straight out of 'The Hills Have Eyes'” (video follows with transcript and commentary): BILL MAHER: And finally, New Rule: Republicans have to stop thinking up intricate psychological explanations for why liberals don't like Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. Let me save you all some time. Are you ready? Because they're crazy people, people who are not that bright and full of awful ideas. Pretty much the exact same reasons we didn't care for George Bush and made jokes about him. So trust me, it's not because they have tits. It's because they are boobs. Now, I'm not saying that sexism doesn't exist and isn't real.
