After studying police reports and Googling addresses, Carr finds that most of those arrested are “spoiled rich kids”—white kids who hail from ritzy Harvard dorms and the comfy suburbs. “Comrades,…

Three weeks ago at 2:00 in the morning my dog, one of the friendliest Jack Russell’s you’ll meet, started a low ugly growl I’d never heard from him before. His hackles were up. But Cameron’s chief policy adviser has been caught on a number of occasions disposing of letters and documents in park waste paper bins. Letwin, a “policy fixer” in the words of one close Cameron aide, has been seen throwing the paperwork into bins, the Daily Mirror reported. The newspaper, which ran a picture of Letwin apparently about to drop papers into a bin while talking on a mobile phone, said they included correspondence on terrorism and national security as well as constituents’ private details. One document was said to describe how intelligence chiefs “failed to get the truth” on Britain’s involvement in controversial terrorist interrogations. The newspaper described his actions as a “security breach”, but a spokesman for the minister insisted that the papers did not contain any sensitive material. “Oliver Letwin does some of his parliamentary and constituency correspondence in the park before going to work, and sometimes disposes of copies of letters there,” the spokesman said. “They are not documents of a sensitive nature,” he added. Letwin is a polymath who has some idiosyncrasies. He talks openly about being an early riser, which stems from the period he worked for the bank NM Rothschild. Letwin still does an early circuit of St James’s Park, usually starting at 5:30am. In this period, he dictates sometimes as much as 90 minutes worth of letters for typing by his secretary during the day. Oliver Letwin Conservatives David Cameron Allegra Stratton guardian.co.uk

The Web ad comically attempts to use selective quoting and distorting camera effects to make Warren look anti-business, or violent, or like an inarticulate speaker, or… something. They are clearly trying to make her seem like a very scary class warrior. Republicans don’t like the fact that she has pointed out that wealthy businesspeople did not make it on their own, and that the entire society played a role in their success by building roads and educating workers and paying cops and firefighters they rely on. These points seem pretty obvious to me, but to Scott Brown and the Republican Party this is frightening, violent rhetoric. This video makes a few other things clear. Brown and the Republicans are obviously going to try to tie Warren to Harvard at every chance, even though polling suggests voters couldn’t care less about where Warren teaches. And other than sexism and empty and tired claims of “class warfare,” Brown really doesn’t have much to work with in his fight for reelection. Having done some polling on the class warfare stuff, and knowing it doesn’t work for the Republicans, my guess is that this ad isn’t really aimed at voters at all, but at their corporate donors. The campaign clearly wants to scare the wealthy corporate special interests that support Brown, so they will drop even more money in his lap. Check the ad out, and contrast it with the actual remarks in full Warren made on this topic: EDITOR’S NOTE: Warren still looks awesome even in an attack ad against her.

A fishing expedition quickly turned into a rescue mission as six friends rushed Wickersham back to shore after a 9-foot-long bull shark clamped down on his leg. The 21-year-old was in the water near his boat after spearfishing with friends off Florida’s Anna Maria Island on September 24 when the shark attacked and momentarily pulled Wickersham underwater. The bull shark bit down on Wickersham’s upper thigh and “tore back flesh so deep it exposed his thigh bone,” West Manatee Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Dennis Dotson told the Herald Tribune. Paramedics met Wickersham onshore and sent him to a nearby hospital via emergency helicopter, where he would later endure two surgeries and about 800 stitches, the Islander reports. Doctors said they were able to save the thigh muscle. 911 dispatcher Amy Todd received the call from Wickersham’s friend Kiera Dunn as the group made their way back to land. “I turned to one of my fellow dispatchers and said, ‘This is real,’” Todd told the Bradenton Herald of her first shark bite emergency. Wickersham’s story has been told by several media outlets, including NBC’s The Today Show and ABC’s Good Morning America. He is the fifth shark-bite victim in Manatee County in more than 100 years, according to the Islander. A spokesperson for PETA told the Bradenton Herald she was glad Wickersham would survive his injuries, but she expressed the organization’s dissatisfaction with spearfishing. “…We hope after this painful experience he will consider the terror and pain that fish feel when they are impaled and suffocated to death and consider taking up another pastime,” Ashley Byrne told the newspaper. Fishing fleets kill up to 70 million sharks per year, according to an annual report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File. In comparison, about five people per year are killed by sharks. Another man fishing off Anna Maria Island sustained injuries from a shark later that week, the Herald-Tribune reports. The President held a joint press conference with Lee Myung-Bak, President of South Korea. Ed Henry had the first question of the conference and asked Obama if he considered the alleged Iranian assassination plot to be “an act of war.” Henry decided to quote a Mitt Romney statement from last week when asking for the President’s plans to address Iran’s alleged terror plot. Henry asked the President “what specific steps will you take to hold Iran accountable? Especially when Mitt Romney charged last week, quote, ‘If you do not want America to be the strongest nation on Earth, I am not your President. You have that president today.’” Obama paused and answered, “Well I did not know you were the spokesman for Romney,” and smiled down at Henry. Henry discussed the exchange with Megyn Kelly on her show and defended his decision to quote Mitt Romney in his question. “I was trying to put it in the broader context of not just Mitt Romney, but there are a lot of Republicans out there who would charge that this president leads from behind,” he said. “…Instead, he decided to go after me a little bit.” Henry has clashed repeatedly with Obama’s spokesman, Jay Carney. The famous Testman himself is just an actor, of course, but Verizon’s self-proclaimed “test cars” are a thing of reality; in fact, the fleet numbers a cool hundred nationwide. We had the opportunity to take a quick peek inside one of these cars, each of which drive an endless number of miles to measure the performance of not only Big Red’s network, but its competition as well. You wouldn’t recognize any of these unmarked cars if they drove past you on the street unless you were trained to look for the outside clues: on the roof lies a GPS module in concert with several black nubs, each one acting as its own phone antenna. If you look close enough at the back windows, you may be able to make out the multitudes of USB data sticks taped to them. All of these elements are crucial for Verizon in order to collect real-time data on how its network stacks up against the likes of AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, not to mention regional carriers such as Cricket and MetroPCS. Thus, each test car is equipped with phones that work on almost every network and try each one out thousands of times a year. The company’s goal? To ensure that it maintains a standard of excellence in its network performance for both its voice and data quality. So how does this all happen? Read on past the break to find out what’s inside the car.
