Click here to view this media Conservative MSNBC host Joe Scarborough Thursday tore into the base of the Republican Party in Iowa for pushing Michele Bachmann, someone who is “never going to get close winning the presidential nomination.” “Michele Bachmann’s first answer was, I wish the federal government had defaulted,” Scarborough recalled Bachmann saying during Thursday night’s Republican debate. “Had defaulted! A week after Americans lost — some of them perhaps lost half of their pensions. Lost half of their 401ks. When trillions of dollars went down the drain with Americans suffering, she said that and got applause.” “If anybody thinks that guys like my dad are going to be voting that way… they are out of their mind and they are too stupid not only to prognosticate, they are too stupid to run Slurpee machines in Des Moines… Michele Bachmann is a joke. She is a joke. Her answer is a joke. Her candidacy is a joke… Iowa, if you let her win, you prove your irrelevance once again.”

Seeing nothing that looked like it would fit me (unsurprisingly, since I was standing in the middle of the women’s section) I started walking toward Juniors. (Juniors is generally inclusive of teens 13 through 19, although it may, depending on the store, cater more to the upper or lower wedge of that age group.) It was while walking past the Intimates aisle that I noticed every single bra on the Juniors rack was a pushup. Even a bunch marked “Sport” were, which seemed to defy the real purpose. Whether plain black or garishly multicolored, every single one was designed to create illusory cleavage. I have nothing against padded bras in general. But my immediate thought in the store was, Why the hell does a teenage girl need one? The issue of the over-sexualizing of girls from an early age has come to the forefront with a recent news story about model Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau posing suggestively for the cover of Vogue magazine. Over a series of photos, the ten-year-old is shown sprawled on leopard-print cushions, wearing a skimpy gold dress, stiletto heels, and posing heavily made-up, with rouge and lipstick. She’s ten years old, yet she looks scarily adult in the photos. The question is, should we be so surprised? We’ve had it coming for a while now. After all, we live in a culture where the walls of any Abercrombie and Fitch store are adorned with some dude’s naked torso and skimpily dressed girls, where JCPenney, Macy’s, and Aeropostale’s websites all feature comprehensive selections of lacy G-strings and thongs on their juniors pages. “Aerie,” American Eagle’s undergarments line aimed at teenage girls (According to a press release: “aerie by American Eagle is a new line of intimates and dormwear designed for girls 15 to 25 years of age”), features on its homepage “Drew–Our New Pushup Bra That Adds 2 Cup Sizes,” with the heading “Double Whoa.” Do fifteen-year-olds really need an extra two cup sizes? Aerie’s underwear selection isn’t a whole lot better, featuring lots and lots of tiny uncomfortable looking lace thongs (with the cheery slogan, “Even more cutie for your booty!”) In a nation where we’re dealing with sky-high teenage pregnancy rates, where we claim to be trying to get girls to have more positive body image and value themselves based on intellect and achievement rather than looks, are these garments sending the right message? You may pass this off as just teenagers wanting to rebel against their parents and dress skimpily, that it’s an age thing, but it has a lot to do with marketing too. A deluge of undergarment advertising — storefront posters or Times Square ads featuring young models — has made what used to be adult lingerie acceptable, even common, wear for teenage girls. And where there’s money to be made, companies won’t stop at age 13. Abercrombie and Fitch marketed a padded pushup “triangle bikini top” to girls as young as seven. America, you’re sending girls a mixed message. On one hand you’re saying to have positive body image and love who we are, on the other we’re being marketed makeup and clothing that obviously turns us into someone different. We’re not supposed to go after boys with looks (or really show that much skin at all), yet we’re being sold “boyfriend pushups,” lacy thongs, and magazines like Seventeen (which is read by girls way younger than seventeen, I’ll tell you) or CosmoGirl with feature articles like “476 Ways to be Irresistible.” By creating so many illusory images of physical perfection, whether on store aisles or storefront ads, magazine covers or TV shows, we speak more to the profit margins of companies than the self-esteem of today’s girls. The unsaid message of that endless rack of juniors’ pushup bras? No matter what size you are, it still isn’t good enough. This issue might seem trivial, but I think the battle for girls’ empowerment will not only be fought in company boardrooms and campaign rallies, the sports stadium or the conference stage. It’ll be fought on the magazine covers and the storefront ads, on the designer’s table and a department store aisle … where someone else is probably wondering if teenage girls really need pushup bras.
Continue reading …It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion , a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule. If you’re looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won’t find one here — most of the new features aren’t cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you’ll find the domain name of the page you’re parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a “fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread,” enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s “faster and uses less memory.” We’ve downloaded the desktop version of the browser ourselves, and we’ve found the release quite snappy. If you’re not afraid of a little pre-release downloading, you can catch the (desktop) fox at the source links below. And as per usual, please let us know how it’s treating you. Firefox 6 breaks out ahead of schedule, gets official August 16th originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 14:14:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Of course, as The FYC pointed out in 2005, nobody remembers witnessing the titanic clout with their own eyes and there has never been any video evidence of the at-bat.. until now. Thanks to Joe Sports Fan, there is finally proof of Laga’s extraordinary accomplishment. The clip below is from a New York Mets highlight tape and it not only shows Laga’s incredible foul ball, but it also shows the fans giving him a standing ovation. Scroll down to watch the video. It’s about one of Dr. Seuss’s enigmatic little creatures, the Chippendale Mupp, who is featured in his classic “Sleep Book.” The Mupp is a sharp-toothed furry fellow with an impossibly long tail. As a part of his bedtime routine, this weird little beast bites down hard on the end of its own tail. Seuss informs us that: His tail is so long, he won’t feel any pain, ‘Til the nip makes the trip and gets up to his brain. In exactly eight hours, The Chippendale Mupp Will, at last, feel the bite and yell, “Ouch!” and wake up. What a revealing parable about the alarm clock as a self-inflicted pain in the rear! Even more so, this is a story that calls our attention to the subtle intentions we bring to bed with us. A National Sleep Foundation poll found that slightly more than half of all adults felt they “needed” an alarm clock to get up in the morning. Nearly 70 percent of young adults aged 18 – 29 felt this way. I think of such routine dependence on alarm clocks as a serious and as of yet unrecognized sleep disorder — “Bedtime Tail-Biting Behavior.” It’s been said there is no hope for a civilization that starts each day to the sound of an alarm clock. Though this may be overstated, it’s clear that the alarm clock is a ubiquitous symbol of our cultural regimentation and widespread devaluation of sleep. Awakening to an alarm all but guarantees that our sleep will be artificially truncated, predisposing us to wake up on the wrong side of the bed. If you routinely wake up with an alarm clock, you are never getting your full allotment of sleep. Would we consider setting a timer to artificially limit dinner or love-making? The alarm goes off and — ready or not — you’re done. I believe that Bedtime Tail-Biting Behavior is associated with an even deeper psychological dysfunction — that of getting down on the wrong side of the bed. The wrong side of the bed is the one with all of that waking world paraphernalia next to it. It’s the side of the bed adjacent to the nightstand displaying a digital clock and lamps and phones and other things that tether us to the waking world. It’s the side of the bed you’re on when you set your alarm clock and your attention is drawn away from tonight’s sleep and toward tomorrow’s rendezvous with waking. When we get into bed, too often our intention is not so much directed at going go to sleep, but going through sleep to the next morning’s awakening. Most of the thousands of folks I’ve informally polled over the years admit that when they slip under the covers and close their eyes, they do not set their sights on a descent into the sea of sleep. Instead, preoccupied with thoughts about the next day, they snorkel their way across to the shoreline of tomorrow morning’s awakening. We’ve lost our regard for and bearings around sleep. For too many, ongoing nightly skirmishes with insomnia have left them inured to sleep’s wonder. Others are distracted by the seduction of waking life and have forgotten how incredibly sweet and rejuvenating a good night’s sleep can be. Too many of us just close our eyes and hope for the best. Think about where you go when you go to sleep. As you slip into bed and pull the covers up, what occupies your thoughts? What are your intentions in those moments? And what happens to you — to your sense of self? These are important yet rarely considered questions that define our basic relationship with and personal experience of sleep. How can we get up on the right side of the bed and break the nasty habit of Bedtime Tail-Biting Behavior? First, plan to pay off any sleep debt you might be carrying and resolve to routinely get to bed early enough so that you’ll obtain sufficient sleep. Doing so could eliminate or significantly reduce your dependence on the alarm clock. If you still feel you need to routinely set an alarm, consider some of the newer and gentler alternatives such as dawn simulators that awaken you gradually with increasing light. Second, practice a mindful approach to sleep. When you slip into bed, focus on the treasure of tonight’s sleep, not tomorrow’s waking. Instead of thinking about what you will do in the morning, surrender to the mystery of the present night, enjoying your swim in the sea of sleep with its wondrous dream fish. Instead of awakening in the morning to an alarming “ouch!” — practice coming to gently and gradually, intentionally carrying the serenity of sleep and the enchantment of dreams with you into your new waking day.
