The problem with the pro-life movement is their concerns for “life” end at birth. While writing a story about the famed Octomom (who living up to her comic book villain moniker managed to incense both pro-life and pro-choice groups), one of the pro-life advocates I interviewed explained they were concerned with “life that needs to be protected and children’s welfare.” Then realizing the slip, she quickly corrected, “We don’t agree with welfare though.” So in their view every pregnancy MUST be brought to term – but after that it’s hands off and there’s “freedom” from intervention. Then you should have your rights to privacy. Then you should make your own decisions. The wedge issue of abortion is a red herring. It’s a giant distraction – a shiny thing we all focus on and a drain on resources which could actually be going to making “life” better for American children. The easiest example is how the House GOP, riding on a wave of fiscal outrage with the promise of jobs, has spent their precious little time in session trying to criminalize a procedure for which only a minority of Americans are even eligible. Plus, numbers of abortions per year don’t change even with changing legality or availability of abortions. This means no matter how much money is thrown at making abortion not exist, according to data , the same amount of abortions still take place. So no amount of activism or mouth foam has made the numbers of abortions fewer. But it still eats up plenty of legislative time around the country. South Dakota tabled a law allowing certain people related to a fetus to be able to kill an abortion provider. Nebraska then doubled down and introduced a bill to de-criminalize all murders if the victims are abortion providers. How pro-life is that? What we lack in this country is a pro-quality-of-life movement. You know what’s killing children more than abortion? Obesity. Lack of health care. Poverty. I don’t understand how the Christian religion can be used as grounds to take a hard line on abortion, while simultaneously giving widespread poverty a pass because it’s a “personal responsibility” issue. The poor have no more famous an advocate than Jesus Christ. However, there’s a big swath of Christians who are like die hard Michael Jackson fans who have never heard his music: They admire the man but are missing what he was all about. I don’t understand how people who are so revved up over what a woman does in the privacy of her doctor’s office can just sit back and watch an entire generation of American children be doomed to a shorter lifespan than their parents. Obesity is more than a big health issue – it’s a big death issue. Condemning women’s right to choose an abortion while letting “choice” be the permission for an epidemic of overweight kids is like being a school administrator who’s really only concerned with chalk. I don’t understand how the title of “pro-life” can be claimed for any movement which does not march on the Capitol in support of better health care for post-partum kids. “Life” has to mean more than just treating women like public incubators. Truth be told a big factor in the one out of every five pregnancies ending in abortion is – unemployment. Lack of money. Lack of resources. Being pro-life is short-sighted when it comes to living. If the goal of pro-lifers is eliminating all abortions, they should start by eliminating the reasons for abortions. Unwanted pregnancy is number one, so they should be for birth control. The second is financial. So they should be for what the right wing likes to refer to despairingly as “socialism.” What would a pro-quality-of-life movement support? A living wage for people who work for a living. A viable middle class. An economy which lifts all people, not just the uber-rich . Honest, transparent and accountable corporations and elected officials. Infrastructure. Education. Health care for all. Healthy kids. Instead, those who call themselves pro-life can’t see the forest through their abortion clinic picket signs. Book piracy is nothing new. In the mid 500s, so the story goes, St. Columba copied by hand a manuscript St. Finnian had lent to him. The king was invited to call on the legality of the act; his judgement, “To every cow belongs her calf, to every book belongs its copy,” would certainly please publishers (and dairy farmers) today. Yet the rulings of kings and judges do little to stop people trying to get hold of information. A few years ago, the main reason for piracy was because publishers were not keeping up with the needs of their readers; the Harry Potter books are only now appearing in a digital format via the Pottermore website, but back in 2005, people made their own digital versions instead. Today, most major titles are available in digital editions as well as print. However, many people question why e-books are so expensive. They are often the same price, or close enough, as the print editions, despite the lack of paper, printing, warehousing, physical distribution and retail sales costs involved in their creation. As more people start to use e-readers, the issue of piracy is only going to become more pressing for the industry. It is becoming a serious legal and professional concern, as the BBC recently pointed out in a radio documentary. Will illegal downloading lead to the collapse of publishing as we know it? In an interview last year on the website The Millions, a book pirate going by the name The Real Caterpillar suggested a simple solution: “I guess if every book was available in electronic format with no DRM [Digital Rights Management; the ability to choose on which devices you can read and share a book -- Books Editor] for reasonable prices ($10 max for new/bestseller/omnibus, scaling downwards for popularity and value) it just wouldn’t be worth the time, effort and risk to find, download, convert and load the book when the same thing could be accomplished with a single click on your Kindle.” That’s probably only true to a point. More likely is that, as it gets easier to create and find pirated books, the publishing industry, like the record and movie industries before it, will have to accept that many of the people who download pirate copies would never have bought the books anyway. To measure these as “lost sales” seems a little dishonest itself, and to focus their energies on prosecuting those who download pirated books is perhaps not the best of use of a publisher’s increasingly scarce resources. Instead of trying to scare people away from downloading pirated copies, it would be better for the publishing industry to focus on what it does best: packaging and sharing stories that people want to read, in formats that they want to read them, without what people might view as unreasonable restrictions. (Imagine how you’d feel if you were arrested for trying to lend a book to a friend.) Previously, publishing has been about creating engaging, affordable physical storytelling experiences that fill our bookshelves and share our lives. The challenge today is to create similarly immersive and affordable digital storytelling experiences that people see as great value for money. If the industry fails the challenge, then the pirates will win — not because people inherently want to break the law, but because only the pirates will be giving most people what they want. And if publishers can’t do that, then there’s nothing that even kings or courts can do to save them.

New Shellfish Poison Found In U.S. Waters Caused By Algal Bloom

The bright red skull-and-crossbones signs are hard to miss and increasingly common on Pacific Northwest beaches. A whole new fleet just popped up along the shores of a small bay between the Pacific Ocean and Puget Sound. On Friday, Washington State health officials reported the first U.S. illnesses linked to one particular strain of toxin triggered by an algal bloom. Three people came down with Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) after eating mussels from Sequim Bay, in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The bay is now closed to shellfish harvesting. Although the culprit biotoxin hadn’t been previously detected at unsafe levels in U.S. shellfish, thousands of people in Europe, Asia and South America have reportedly suffered its unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms in recent years. The long-term health effects from DSP are not yet clear; some experts think they might include an increased risk of cancer. “Whether this is really the first case of poisoning here, we don’t know,” said Vera Trainer, program manager of the Marine Biotoxin Group at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle. “But it certainly looks to me like things are getting worse.” Harmful algal blooms, often called red tides, can occur naturally in both marine or fresh waters, and have been a recognized public health threat since well before humans began significantly altering the environment. In the late 1700s, members of Capt. George Vancouver’s exploration crew died after eating mussels contaminated with another toxic strain, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Still, experts suggest that some of the toxins released by various algae species are becoming more prevalent, frequent and virulent across the U.S. from the Oregon coast to Chesapeake Bay. They have been known to pose a range of threats to marine environments, local economies and public health. “The strongest algal blooms occur during very hot weather, where there is lots of sun and not a whole lot of wind,” explained Chris Moore of the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He pointed to this summer’s extreme heat along the east coast as “perfect bloom conditions,” and suggested that the high temperatures may have played a role in what continues to be a particularly problematic algal bloom season in Maryland. The local strain does not produce any toxins, but rather suffocates fish and oysters by clogging their gills. But what Moore calls “mahogany tides” can cause devastating damage to economies dependent on the shellfish. Excess nutrients entering the waterway, including fertilizers, pet waste and sewage, might also contribute to the proliferation of the microscopic marine plants. “A heavy rainfall could produce the last slug of nutrients for algae to start blooming in mass,” said Moore. While experts expect climate change to bring both warmer waters and episodes of heavier rains, they are cautious about making a direct link between global and local phenomena. The role of pollution, and why these microorganisms produce the poisons in the first place, also remains unclear. What does seem clear is that the Pacific Northwest in particular is getting flooded with the toxins and their consequences: DSP joins the region’s potentially fatal PSP and amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) strains. “Poor Puget Sound seems to have pretty much everything,” says Trainer. “Although the Florida Red Tide has not yet come out here.” That Florida Red Tide produces a biotoxin that can cause non-fatal Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP) through ingestion as well as respiratory troubles through inhalation, in addition to killing fish, marine mammals and seabirds en masse. While the Florida Red Tide and other algal blooms are often colored a shade of red — or purple, brown or green — the term can be a misnomer. Just because the water turns an odd color doesn’t mean it will make people sick, though beaches may become less than appealing, like when a bright green bloom took over a beach in Qingdao, China in July. And microorganisms don’t need to concentrate in color-changing levels in order to cause harm. Shellfish that feed upon low levels of them over a prolonged period of time still accumulate enough poison to sicken human consumers. Researchers are just now starting to understand why the algae excrete the physiologically expensive toxin. “They don’t produce it to harm to fish and human, but rather to have better success in their environment,” pointed out William Cochlan, senior research scientist of marine microbial ecology and oceanography at San Francisco State University. “How does the toxin make their life better?” So far, Cochlan’s research has suggested that the toxins may allow single-celled organisms to more easily acquire essential elements, such as iron or copper, from the water. His research lab has also found that the nutrients associated with man-made activities, such as sewage and agricultural fertilizer, only cause certain species of algae to become more toxic. “We cannot generalize to all toxin-producing species,” said Cochlan. “If we can understand what the toxin does, then we can figure out ways that the cell can be happy without the toxin, and ensure that the people and the environment aren’t harmed by the species,” he added. That knowledge could increase researchers’ ability to monitor coastal areas, and quickly close them before an algal bloom begins to cause harm. This might then also allow lucrative fisheries to stay open longer. California, for example, shuts down all coastal areas for recreational mussel harvesting between May and October as a precaution. In the Pacific Northwest, many Native Americans living off of Sequim Bay rely on selling shellfish for subsistence. “They want to know when they can harvest again,” said Trainer.

In the late 1700s, members of Capt. George Vancouver’s exploration crew died after eating mussels contaminated with another toxic strain, Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Still, experts suggest that some of the toxins released by various algae species are becoming more prevalent, frequent and virulent across the U.S. from the Oregon coast to Chesapeake Bay. They have been known to pose a range of threats to marine environments, local economies and public health. “The strongest algal blooms occur during very hot weather, where there is lots of sun and not a whole lot of wind,” explained Chris Moore of the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He pointed to this summer’s extreme heat along the east coast as “perfect bloom conditions,” and suggested that the high temperatures may have played a role in what continues to be a particularly problematic algal bloom season in Maryland. The local strain does not produce any toxins, but rather suffocates fish and oysters by clogging their gills. But what Moore calls “mahogany tides” can cause devastating damage to economies dependent on the shellfish. Excess nutrients entering the waterway, including fertilizers, pet waste and sewage, might also contribute to the proliferation of the microscopic marine plants. “A heavy rainfall could produce the last slug of nutrients for algae to start blooming in mass,” said Moore. While experts expect climate change to bring both warmer waters and episodes of heavier rains, they are cautious about making a direct link between global and local phenomena. The role of pollution, and why these microorganisms produce the poisons in the first place, also remains unclear. What does seem clear is that the Pacific Northwest in particular is getting flooded with the toxins and their consequences: DSP joins the region’s potentially fatal PSP and amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) strains. “Poor Puget Sound seems to have pretty much everything,” says Trainer. “Although the Florida Red Tide has not yet come out here.” That Florida Red Tide produces a biotoxin that can cause non-fatal Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP) through ingestion as well as respiratory troubles through inhalation, in addition to killing fish, marine mammals and seabirds en masse. While the Florida Red Tide and other algal blooms are often colored a shade of red — or purple, brown or green — the term can be a misnomer. Just because the water turns an odd color doesn’t mean it will make people sick, though beaches may become less than appealing, like when a bright green bloom took over a beach in Qingdao, China in July. And microorganisms don’t need to concentrate in color-changing levels in order to cause harm. Shellfish that feed upon low levels of them over a prolonged period of time still accumulate enough poison to sicken human consumers. Researchers are just now starting to understand why the algae excrete the physiologically expensive toxin. “They don’t produce it to harm to fish and human, but rather to have better success in their environment,” pointed out William Cochlan, senior research scientist of marine microbial ecology and oceanography at San Francisco State University. “How does the toxin make their life better?” So far, Cochlan’s research has suggested that the toxins may allow single-celled organisms to more easily acquire essential elements, such as iron or copper, from the water. His research lab has also found that the nutrients associated with man-made activities, such as sewage and agricultural fertilizer, only cause certain species of algae to become more toxic. “We cannot generalize to all toxin-producing species,” said Cochlan. “If we can understand what the toxin does, then we can figure out ways that the cell can be happy without the toxin, and ensure that the people and the environment aren’t harmed by the species,” he added. That knowledge could increase researchers’ ability to monitor coastal areas, and quickly close them before an algal bloom begins to cause harm. This might then also allow lucrative fisheries to stay open longer. California, for example, shuts down all coastal areas for recreational mussel harvesting between May and October as a precaution. In the Pacific Northwest, many Native Americans living off of Sequim Bay rely on selling shellfish for subsistence. “They want to know when they can harvest again,” said Trainer.
