California schools and teachers are rushing to update their social studies classes by January in order to comply with a new state law that requires all students–from kindergarteners to high school seniors–be taught about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Due to the state’s budget crunch, updated textbooks with the new LGBT curriculum won’t be

The unemployment rate for veterans who left military service in the last decade is 11.7 percent — far higher than the already-high overall jobless rate of 9.1 percent — the Washington Post reports, based on newly released Census Bureau

The star stepped out at Monday night’s at Elle’s 18th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. Joining her fellow November issue Elle girls Evan Rachel Wood, Freida Pinto and Barbra Steisand, Aniston walked the red carpet in all her tanned-gam glory. And how glorious it was. Jen wowed in a teeny, silver Kaufman Franco dress, strappy Balenciaga heels, Fred Leighton jewels and a Ferragamo clutch. (Also, is that a ring we spy on her lefthand ring finger?) We hope the fashion statement impressed the discerning eyes of Elle editor-in-chief Robbie Myers and creative director Joe Zee (although Zee himself was the nervous one, tweeting before the event, “Rushing now to get ready for our big @ELLEmagazine #WomenInHollywood event tonite. Downing protein shake – need all the energy I can muster”). He shouldn’t have worried, as all eyes were on Jen last night. Check out her low-cut look in the slideshow below — does the 42-year-old make it work?

Celina Aarons has her two deaf-mute brothers on her plan. They communicate by texting and use their phones to watch videos. Normally, that’s not a problem. Aarons has the appropriate data plan and her bill is about $175. But her brothers spent two weeks in Canada and Aarons never changed to an international plan. Her brothers sent over 2,000 texts and also downloaded videos, sometimes racking up $2,000 in data charges. When Aarons read the bill — all 43 pages of it — she realized she owed $201,005.44. “I was freaking out,” Aarons told the news station WSVN. “I was shaking, crying, I couldn’t even talk that much on the phone. I was like my life is over!” Thankfully, T-mobile agreed to lower the bill to a more manageable $2,500 and gave Aarons six months to pay up, WSVN reports. In 2006, a Malaysian man reportedly received a phone bill totaling $218 trillion for calls made on a number he thought he had disconnected after his father’s death.

Outside of (re)confirming what lies ahead for Tegra , he also spoke quite openly about his feeling towards Windows on ARM in response to a question from Joanna Stern. Here’s the bulk of his reply: “It’s important for [Microsoft] not to position these as PCs. From a finesse perspective — I can’t speak on their behalf — but I would come out with tablets first with Windows on ARM. It helps to establish that this isn’t a PC. Will yesterday’s Office run on tomorrow’s Windows on ARM PC? Will a new version of Office run on tomorrow’s Windows on ARM tablets? Both questions are about legacy, and both are about Office. The actual implementation of it is radically different. I see no reason to make Office 95 to run on Windows on ARM. I think it would be wonderful, absolutely wonderful — I’d say, as someone who uses Windows — it would be almost a requirement to me that [the ARM] device runs Windows interoperably. If Office runs on Windows on ARM — it’s the killer app. Everything else is on the web.” He elaborated to say that he would hope Office for Windows on ARM would support the same files that today’s Office does, much the same way that Office for Mac eventually synced up with its Windows-based sibling. For more from Huang’s interview, hop on past the break! The plight of the two year old girl, nicknamed Yueyue, was ignored by passers-by only to grab the attention of millions around the world. She was hit twice by vehicles on a market street, but around a dozen people walked or rode past before a woman stopped to help. The chilling footage of the incident in Foshan, southern China, sparked a national outpouring of grief and concern. Some argued it could have happened anywhere in the world, while others saw it as a peculiarly Chinese phenomenon or argued it epitomised moral decline and increasing selfishness in a fast-developing society. Doctors said at the time that Yueyue’s injuries were severe and warned that she was unlikely to survive. On Friday morning the Guangzhou military district general hospital announced she had died shortly after midnight due to brain and organ failure. “Her injuries were too severe and the treatment had no effect,” intensive care unit director Su Lei told a press conference. Microblogs were flooded with messages of sadness and sympathy, with some users hoping that her death might prove a turning point for society. “Yueyue has left at last. Besides the sadness, can one life get society’s ‘non-indifference’ back in return?” asked one. “If Yueyue’s unfortunateness can reflect anything, I think we shall not blame the others, but examine ourselves. Maybe we walk too fast and some precious things are left on the road.” Police have detained the drivers of both the vehicles that hit Yueyue on suspicion of causing a traffic collision but have not said what charges they will face. Some of those who passed by the injured girl have said they did not see her, while others said they were too frightened to help. Many in China have suggested that fear of extortion, rather than indifference, was to blame for people ignoring her. The country has seen several high-profile cases where people have successfully sued passers by who helped them – claiming they caused the injuries. Some citizens and scholars have called for a Good Samaritan law, but others have argued that the issue is a moral and social one rather than a legal problem. Yueyue’s rescuer has been lauded as a heroine for stopping to assist her, but has gone home to the countryside after being overwhelmed by the public attention. China Tania Branigan guardian.co.uk
