Chris Matthews, Reince Priebus Spar About GOP, Tea Party (VIDEO)

Chris Matthews and Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus had a testy exchange on Friday’s “Hardball.” It was Priebus’ first time on the show, and Matthews seemed determined not to make him forget it. He began by asking about whether or not many Republicans running for president believe in evolution or climate change. “Wouldn’t that be kind of scary to have somebody who is so anti-intellectual as president?” Matthews asked. “Come on,” Priebus said, adding that the “fundamental question” of the election was whether people are “better off” than when President Obama entered office. “If that’s the issue, you win,” Matthews said. “…[But] philosophy is important. You guys are always talking about the philosophy of our president…isn’t that fair to ask about [Republican] philosophy?” Priebeus said he couldn’t talk about the philosophy about all of the candidates. “Well, you’re experts on Obama, you call him a socialist!” Matthews shot back. Priebus pivoted back to Obama, saying that his policies had failed and that Americans were “starving for real, authentic people” to lead. “Do you have a hard time with the fact that your party left this country in wreckage?” Matthews said. “…You think you left this bed all made for him.” When Priebus tried to respond, Matthews cut him off. “Just say that to me!” he shouted. “Tell me he walked in the door into hell.” “I don’t think that there’s any party or any person blameless for this,” Priebus said. Matthews let him talk some more until he mentioned Obama’s vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. “You’re scoring all your points,” he said. “You’ve got all your points and you’ve made them.” The two then argued about the difference between the Republican Party and the Tea Party (Priebus demurred, saying the Tea Party was too amorphous to compare to the Republicans). Matthews said the Tea Party “basically [has] a bad attitude towards race, towards black people, towards immigrants,” a statement that Priebus did not respond to. Clearing 2011: Four students competing for each university place

Some 189,000 students now eligible for clearing Up to four students are competing for each place to start university this autumn, official statistics show. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) said, as of midnight, 189,267 applicants had not found a place and were eligible to be in clearing. Clearing is where students who fail to meet their university offers are matched with vacant courses. Last year, 47,000 applicants secured places in clearing. David Willetts, the universities minister, has said this could fall to 40,000 this year. However, Ucas estimates that half of all students eligible to be in clearing may not have good enough grades to win any place. Some 425,487 students have been accepted on to courses – up 10,416 on this time last year. A further 61,737 are waiting for a university to decide whether to offer them a place or are appealing against their grades. Mary Curnock Cook, chief executive of Ucas, said on Friday that students with good grades should apply again next year. “You don’t have the agonising wait until August. You will have an unconditional offer, which you may well have before Christmas.” There were more than 684,000 applicants this year, a 1.3% rise on last year. Sony Ericsson unveils Live with Walkman handset for music-loving Android users

Four months after unveiling the relatively bare bones W8, Sony Ericsson has now taken the wraps off yet another Walkman phone, known as the Live with Walkman. Powered by a 1GHz processor, this Android handset features a 3.2 inch, capacitive touchscreen (with somewhat disappointing HVGA resolution), a five megapixel AF shooter with 8x digital zoom, and a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing HD video in 720p. The petite, Gingerbread-equipped device also packs a lackluster 320MB of RAM, provides up to 32GB of microSD storage, and offers either tri-band 3G support (HSPA+) at 850, 1900 and 2100MHZ, or dual-band 3G at 900 and 2100MHz, depending on the model. And, as you’d expect, Sony Ericsson has placed a special emphasis on the music phone’s media capabilities, beefing it up with enhanced audio and Qriocity integration. The specs may not sound earth shattering, but we’ll wait until we get pricing information before casting judgment. The Live with Walkman is slated to hit “selected markets” by Q4 of this year, but you can find more information in the full PR, after the break. Louise Mensch claims Anonymous and LulzSec threatened her children

Corby MP alleges hacking groups have warned her off using Twitter via email and says she has reported incident to the police Conservative MP Louise Mensch has claimed she has received threats against her children from the hacking groups Anonymous and LulzSec . The MP for Corby made the claim on Twitter in the early hours of Monday morning from New York, where she is spending her summer holiday, but did not reveal the nature of the threat she had allegedly received. She tweeted : “Had some morons from Anonymous/Lulzsec threaten my children via email. As I’m in the States, be good …to have somebody from the UK police advise me where I should forward the email.” She said she was revealing the information on Twitter because the threat aimed to warn her off using the social media network. She later added that she had reported the incident to the police in the House of Commons . The Commons authorities are referring queries to Scotland Yard, which said it was aware of the allegations and was looking into it. Mensch, who wrote popular fiction before entering the Commons last year, is an avid user of Twitter and has embarked on a number of high-profile debates in recent days about social media blackouts during the recent riots, phone hacking and Sally Bercow’s appearance in the Big Brother house. LulzSec – Lulz Security – and Anonymous are hacking groups that advocate civil disobedience on the internet . LulzSec was behind the hacking of News International websites at the height of the News of the World phone-hacking revelations and a separate operation against Nintendo. A hoax story posted on the Sun website suggested Rupert Murdoch had been found dead after having taken the rare-earth metal “palladium” before “stumbling into his famous topiary garden late last night”. The page later redirected to LulzSec’s Twitter account. Anonymous has targeted the Church of Scientology, Visa and Mastercard, and various Middle Eastern governments in the pursuit of what it sees as transparency and individual liberty.
