The caller is working from an obvious script complete with worldwide conspiracies including: Hillary Clinton, Cuba and Iran. Perhaps my favorite part is when the NRA caller offers condolences for “the school shooting,” even though she of course doesn’t know which school shooting she’s offering condolences for when challenged (it is apparently that one “in the paper” that “recently” happened–you know, Columbine, in 1999). There is no such thing as shame–not during Wayne LaPierre’s tenure at the NRA. They’ll use fake compassion over a school shooting and a manufactured galactic conspiracy if it will bring in more cash for arms dealers and help pay LaPierre’s $1.27 million salary per year. Oprah took an unusually downbeat turn in her latest note to her Facebook followers. The freshly minted OWN CEO was writing to share details about her upcoming show “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” where she uses her talk show to teach viewers lessons she thinks are worth learning. (There’s even a companion class on Oprah’s website.) “My greatest desire is to fulfill the highest, truest expression of myself as a Human being,” she wrote. “I’m still on that journey. If that is your desire as well, join me every night as we explore new ways of looking at Life, and how it works for all of us.” But Oprah clearly had more troubling things on her mind. She said that the show was important because things were so dire in the world: The world is a mess. We all know it and talk about in our private lives. It’s depressing and overwhelming at times to look at how much potential we have and yet we’re constantly bombarded by images and information that speaks to the lowest common denominator. We can do better. We can be better. I know it’s true. Oprah has increasingly turned to Facebook to send her fans messages about what’s going on in her life, as well as to open up about the struggles of running the OWN network.

Mitt Romney is looking to quadruple the size of his $12 million California home, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The GOP presidential candidate has filed an application with the San Diego government to bulldoze the 3,009-square-foot beachfront house in La Jolla and replace it with a 11,062-square-foot property. According to a campaign official, “They want to enlarge their two bedroom home because with five married sons and 16 grandchildren it is inadequate for their needs.” In addition to the California house and a townhouse outside of Boston, which is their official primary residence, the Romneys own a $10 million vacation home on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro, N.H. In 2009, they sold the 6,400-square-foot colonial in Belmont, Mass. where they raised their five sons for $3.5 million and their 9,500-square-foot Deer Valley, Utah ski lodge for close to $5.25 million. Romney purchased the La Jolla property three years ago. “I wanted to be where I could hear the waves,” Romney told reporters at a book signing in California last year. “As a boy we spent summers on Lake Huron and I could hear the crashing waves at night. It was one of my favorite things in the world; being near the water and the waves was something I very badly wanted to experience again.” The Romney campaign said that construction on the new home will not begin until after his campaign is over.
