Click here to view this media The mainstream media in Ohio (specifically around Cincinnati) seem to have latched onto the story that ThinkProgress broke by showing the lengths some Congressmen will go to avoid looking bad on YouTube. Well, Steve Chabot just made himself look a whole worse with these sleazy tactics. They seized citizen journalists’ cameras in front of news cameras. Now Chabot is accusing ThinkProgress of having organized the protest to make him look bad. TP has found an unlikely defender in the form of that other TP, the tea party. Chabot didn’t just take flak for his filming crackdown from the left. Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips discussed the matter in an article entitled “America’s dumbest Republican Congressman“ : I don’t know any other way to put this. Chabot is a moron. First, you cannot confiscate the property of a private citizen without a warrant or some other due process. Second, and I will type this slowly just in case Chabot is reading this so he will understand this. PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT A CRIME. Here is the report and video from WLWT in Cincinnati. Below the fold are the original YouTube videos by ThinkProgress and ProgressOhio which have caused this commotion, and that Chabot will likely regret. (WLWT) NORTH AVONDALE — A meeting between Rep. Steve Chabot and constituents on Monday included confrontations over cameras at the event. Two protesters had their cameras taken from them by a Cincinnati police officer at the event at the North Avondale Recreation Center. When one pulled out a camera phone to shoot a photo, he was escorted to the back of the room. The officer pointed out that a sign had been placed at the door to the meeting stating that cameras weren’t allowed, while the protesters said that it was a public meeting space and they had a right to use cameras. Protesters complained that unlike previous Chabot events, the public was not allowed to speak, but had to submit questions in writing that Chabot would answer. Think Progress Progress Ohio

A senior couple in Pasco County, Florida is facing the prospect of foreclosure. But the reason doesn’t have to do with missed mortgage payments. This time, it’s reportedly because they paid too early one month, and used the wrong routing number the next. Only three months after Sharon Bullington, 70, negotiated a mortgage modification under the Obama administration’s Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), Bank of America informed her and her husband that they had been ejected from the trial plan for improper payments, St. Petersburg Times reports. (h/t The Daily What.) The problem was that Sharon has made her January payment in December, instead of the required “month in which it [was] due.” She then allegedly incorrectly wrote her routing number on her February payment, leading the bank to cancel the modification. The Bullington’s explanations and pleas for help have reportedly been to no avail. The episode is only the latest in a series of oddball foreclosure stories that have included a homeowner being asked to pay $0.00 in order to avoid foreclosure and JPMorgan repurchasing a soldier’s home on the same day he returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. But in many ways, the Bullington’s story goes against the typical narrative of a post-recession American homeowner’s struggle. Instead of paying too early, most of those threatened with foreclosure are struggling to make payments on time. Indeed, the number of mortgages which are overdue by a month rose to the highest level in a year in the second quarter of this year, according to Bloomberg. Consequently, the jobs crisis is largely being blamed for the percentage of home loans overdue by 30 days, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association in Washington. Also a rarity is the Bullington’s ability to successfully negotiate a mortgage modification in the first place. Despite the continued existence of the Obama administration’s anti-foreclosure initiative HAMP, the number of preliminary mortgage modifications approved in June was the lowest since April 2009, at 15,000, according to government data reported by The Huffington Post. There’s nothing worse than missing out on your favorite street meat because you’ve only got plastic. But even smaller vendors may soon be able to process that dollar hot dog with a credit card, as Verizon Wireless is making Intuit’s GoPayment card reader available in its 2,300 retail stores. The small business-friendly machine plugs into a BlackBerry, Android or iOS device to transform the smartphone or tablet into a credit card processing machine using a free app. After a $30 mail-in rebate, the hardware is free with no monthly fees and a 2.7-percent fee per transaction. Merchants who upgrade to the premium version for $12.95 per month will only have to fork over 1.7-percent fee per swipe, bringing the net income on that dollar tube of processed meat to just over 98 cents. Growing up geek? I’m having trouble believing I did. In preparation for this piece I scoured all of my family’s photo albums (these stop at around 2004 — must’ve been that digital camera craze), and the pictorial evidence to support my geeky ways just doesn’t seem to exist. Notably, I had to start wearing huge glasses in kindergarten, but to me that’s merely a trapping of the stereotypical nerd aesthetic — though I do fancy my current Rivers Cuomo-esque horn-rims.
