The famine in Somalia has spread to new regions, the UN will announce tomorrow, with the food crisis yet to reach its peak. The new front is expected to be in the Bay region in south-central Somalia. Some four million people – more than 50 per cent of the population – are now in crisis, and the famine is expected to spread further in the coming months. In total almost 13 million people are facing starvation in the Horn of Africa, aid agencies estimate. If you’re one of the many Final Cut Pro users unhappy with Apple’s latest version — and you haven’t been lured into Adobe’s open arms — today brings good news. According to MacRumors , Cupertino will continue to offer the previous, discontinued version via telephone sales. Calling 800-MY-APPLE and asking for Final Cut Studio (part number MB642Z/A) will net you Final Cut Pro 7, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, DVD Studio Pro 4, Color 1.5 and Compressor 3.5 for $999, or $899 for qualified educational customers. That’s a far cry from the $299.99 for Final Cut Pro X, but if you’re interested in, say, opening legacy projects or outputting to tape, you might grudgingly pony up the extra dough. Another entry in my Saturday night humor postings for NewsBusters, usually drawn from the clips shown at the end of FNC’s Special Report which frequently come from video montages picked up off the late night comedy shows. It was a pretty weak week with some lame offerings, so this week I’m going back into the archives. Tonight, from November of 2010, a clip of how some morning news anchors reacted with colorful exasperation when they cut away at just the wrong time and so missed a bridge demolition. The two anchors are Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten, from Chicago’s WGN-TV’s Morning News . This clip, promoted by WGN , got quite a bit of online play last year, but if you didn’t see it then you can check it out now. It’s been just over two weeks since HP announced plans to discontinue production of its webOS devices, and speculation over the future of the platform is still going strong. Just this week, Samsung CEO Choi Gee Sung put to rest rumors of a webOS deal, and now two leaked missives from inside HP show plans to split the webOS global business unit in two. According to letters apparently from Todd Bradley and Shane Robison, webOS software will find a new home in the outfit’s Office of Strategy and Technology, while the hardware division will remain with the Personal Systems Group. One of these letters from Tom Bradley explains the split: The pan-HP charter of OS&T provides a broad view of how we can optimize our technologies. In fact, it has proven to be a successful incubator of technologies; it is home to a team of senior technology experts devoted exclusively to exploring longer-term strategies for our technologies. The second missive, from Shane Robison, goes on to say that “webOS software is still a great asset.” None of this should come as a surprise, as our interview with Stephen DeWitt reiterated the company’s dedication to the webOS platform, while HP’s recent ads hocking PSG show the outfit’s intentions to spin-off its PC business. The Labor Department reported Friday that for the first time since 1945 – needless to say a long, long time ago – the economy produced exactly zero jobs in the month of August. Despite the history, the tremendously disappointing numbers, and the President speaking before a joint session of Congress next week about this very issue, ABC's World News actually made this its fourth story – yes, I said fourth! – Friday evening (video follows with commentary): Up first on one of the nation's most-watched nightly news programs was a two and a half minute discussion about gas prices heading into the Labor Day weekend. After that came a minute on the President's helicopter being inconveniently rerouted forcing the Commander-in-Chief and his daughter to be driven to Camp David. Imagine how that must have ruined their holiday weekend. Then came an almost four minute report on tropical storm Lee. Yes, I said four minutes on a tropical storm. You'd think these folks would have learned from over-hyping the previous tropical storm. That clearly not being the case, roughly nine minutes into the program, with the President set to give a jobs address to a joint session of Congress next Thursday, “World News” finally got to what was clearly the most important story of the day. Would this have been the case if George W. Bush or any Republican was in the White House? Doubtful, as bad economic news was typically front and center in what young folks in our nation commonly refer to as “the day.” Just as noteworthy, the placement of this story at ABCNews.com kept it off the “World News” front page: As you can see, there's nothing about the disappointing jobs report, but there is a link to “Gas Prices Down, Economy Recovering.” Somebody was really using his/her noggin with that one. Not surprisingly, ABC News wasn't alone in thinking the jobs report wasn't the most important story Friday. The “NBC Nightly News” led with tropical storm Lee, followed it up with more on the impact of tropical storm Irene, and then told the nation about August's horrible unemployment numbers. These folks sure are fixated on tropical storms, aren't they? Bucking the trend was the “CBS Evening News” which began Friday's program with what most likely is the greatest concern of most Americans. When Dan Rather's former employer is besting its broadcast competition, you should be very concerned. I know I am.
